"The battle of The Strings has arrived. A long awaited battle between two of my favorite synthesizers, the Roland Jupiter 8 and Juno 60. At around 3 min in I add delay and then pull it back out around the 5 min mark. It comes back again later on in the demo. Honestly, I really didn't need to add any effect at all but i wanted to demonstrate these strings with and without. Which synthesizer wins this battle? Will it be the warmth of the Jupiter 8 or the colored chorus of the amazing Juno 60? Both synthesizers have things that the other cannot do, but both synthesizers are amazing."

"This was a first take for me on this so I didn't get the exact sound or my timing perfect on the solo but here it is. It seems like I read where he used an Oberheim 4 voice for the lead. I think that the other lead parts in the song are two oscillators tuned 2 octaves apart. I know that my Alesis Ion has that Fooling Yourself patch on it and it is a great one! One of my all time favorite songs by Styx!

"Both synthesizers do a good job at producing a warm and colorful bass. To me, it seems that the JP8 excels in clarity but the Juno 60 excels in color, that is with the chorus effect engaged."

"In this video i am using the Moog Prodigy for bass. The Prodigy is my 2nd favorite Moog synthesizer I have ever played due to the raw huge sound. It is the closest sounding synthesizer to the Moog Minimoog Model D, which of course, is my favorite mono synth ever. There are not a ton of fancy knobs and gadgets on the Prodigy, it is a very simple, but yet GREAT sounding synthesizer, which is the most important thing to me for the style of music I play.. mostly 80's!! Update: someone mentioned he used a Prophet 5 and a Yamaha CS-50 at the time. Below is a video from them performing it live in 1983. You can see the CS50 on top at 2:58. Can't tell what's under it. The left side panels by the left knob box don't match a Prophet-5 or OB-Xa.

Update2: Turns out that is a custom case for the Prophet-5 that the CS60 sits on. Via the same source:

"He had a custom wood case built to hold the P5 under the CS. It sat on top of the electric grand. I actually talked to him about it when he stopped by Sweetwater when I worked there. He also used a Yamaha SS-30 string synth and sometimes a second P5 on his left."
