Roland System 8 "That 80's Sound"

"Here is a Reso Synth patch that I created using the Roland System 8 synthesizer. I am having to use my Roland FA06 as a controller at times due to the System 8 only having 49 keys. I am using a Linn Drum LM-2 for drums."

"A statement about Oberheim's "A big part of the "raw" sound of the early OBs is the VCA and voice summing audio circuit. The early stuff used a CA3080 OTA for both VCA and summing audio. Oberheim pushed the 3080s hard which pushed them into mild distortion. That 3080 overdrive contributed to the raw sound of early Oberheims.

The OB-Xa used the CEM3360 VCA in the voice summing circuit which was much cleaner and less distorted than the 3080 and that's when the sound started to change (VCA was still 3080). OB-8 further replaced the VCA with CEM3360 removing 3080s completely from the signal path. Tom Oberheim used to complain that the OB-8 was "too clean" and this is why.

That's why the progression of Oberheims got less raw sounding"."

"Here is a video game composition that I did about 13 years ago using the Alesis Ion. I went back about 3 years ago and added the Moog sounding lead solo parts. I recorded the main part using a Roland VS1880 back then, later recorded the lead parts with my Yamaha AW4416 which I still use today. I had ambitions to market it to the video game industry, but like so many other ideas, it never made it out of my bedroom.. lol I used a Roland TD10 for drums..."

Update: someone mentioned he used a Prophet 5 and a Yamaha CS-50 at the time. Below is a video from them performing it live in 1983. You can see the CS50 on top at 2:58. Can't tell what's under it. The left side panels by the left knob box don't match a Prophet-5 or OB-Xa.

Update2: Turns out that is a custom case for the Prophet-5 that the CS60 sits on. Via the same source:

"He had a custom wood case built to hold the P5 under the CS. It sat on top of the electric grand. I actually talked to him about it when he stopped by Sweetwater when I worked there. He also used a Yamaha SS-30 string synth and sometimes a second P5 on his left."

"In good condition, works great and sounds freaking INCREDIBLE! Was restored, including chips by synthspa. Had many upgrades done such as lighted bender, blue led lights, etc. The buttons were changed to resemble a Jupiter 8. There are 6 led lights installed to the right but one of those do not light up anymore. They can be turned on or off by an installed switch right below them. Something was done to it to make it sound more like a Juno 60. What that mod is called I do not know. Below are a couple of youtube videos showing me playing it. Remember, I am recording with my cell phone so the quality is nothing near what it is in person, but you will get the idea. There are some paint chips on the back of it, but it still looks very good overall. Wooden sides have also been installed."
