Squidfanny - 'Rhythm Modulator' Alesis HR-16 Drum Machine (Jan 2012)

YouTube Uploaded by squidfanny on Jan 26, 2012

squidfanny on eBay

"RHYTHM MODULATOR Techno Groove Acid machine.... Built around an Alesis HR-16 Drum Machine, which has been retro-fitted with an integrated Step Sequencer, with Pitch Mods, Killer Glitch and (Slightly Dodgy) Custom ROMs with 'nuff Old Skool Beats and Bass.

Sequencer is synced to the beat of the machine and is fully patchable, for programing complex tempo synced Glitches, beat swapping & effects.
Program the sequencer to twist and modulate the sample pitch, thus adding groove and expression to loops and rhythms....All tempo synced and with realtime modulation knobs and Decay control. Cool, eh?

See later part of vid for more in-depth look at the sequencer mod.

This machine contains the original Alesis 'electronic' ROMS and also my own (Slightly dodgy) custom Rom. It still has a few bugs, mainly quiet 'clicks' at the end of the samples when pitching down. Also some noise generated from the compression process, but this IS an ongoing project...

Thanks to EX-FADE and also BURNKIT2600 for assistance with this project."

Yamaha MU90r - 'Untitled Track' - by Andy Barrow

YouTube Uploaded by MrRidgebackman on Jan 26, 2012

"Hi,

This is my beloved Yamaha MU90r Rack Mount Synthesizer - known as a Tone Generator. It features quite a lot of features and sound for such a slim unit.

In essence it is 2 x16 MIDI Synths in one box and features the standard MIDI Sounds and the Yamaha XG MIDI Sounds. Most of the parameters can be edited - yes by the menu options and also has 2 A/D inputs and four Outputs at the back end so you can steer your Drum Kit elsewhere on the Mixing Console. It is a nice sounding synth even now, although some of the sounds may need tweaking, the performance setting is quite powerful offering 4 sounds layered as one patch...Nice.

Hope you enjoy

Andy"

Apologies to anyone I missed this year. I ran out of time and covering the NAMM floor in one day can be brutal. I primarily focused on pics this year as shooting video eats up more time and the audio quality with all the noise on the NAMM floor can be pretty poor. I did manage to capture a few though. They will go up as I have time.

BTW, if you mouse goes wonky after viewing a slide show try hitting the escape key, scroll up with the arrow keys, or hit F5 to refresh the page. It looks like Flickr embeds has an odd bug on some browsers when you have another input box like the comments box active.

My final booth at NAMM before heading out to the TRASH_AUDIO BBQ. I have to say, the Minitaur really surprised me. When I came up to the booth someone was playing what reminded me of those super low bass frequencies that can be best described as what you hear in Mexican Polka music.  It sounds silly, but if you heard it before you know what I mean.  Super smooth low frequencies.  I assumed my Voyager could cover it, but now I'm not so sure.  I definitely want to spend some more time with it.

For those not familiar with the faces, from left to right:  Don Buchla, Tom Oberheim, and Dave Smith.

Yep... Pretty mind blowing experience seeing them all together like that in person. History of synthesis all there in one booth, with tequila shots on tow. :) I finally got to meet Tom Oberheim, maker of my first synth, the Oberheim Matrix-6, hence matrix. I wanted a 12, but couldn't afford one. The MATRIX-6 is an underrated and powerful synth with an extensive matrix modulation, two ramp generators and a tracking generator. It not only has a velocity sensitive keyboard, but it also has aftertouch and release velocity. Tom said it was the last synth he worked on before moving on from the company. He liked the synth but did not like the interface as it lacked even a simple data slider for real time control. Meeting Tom was my personal highlight of the show as I never met him before. I had met Dave Smith in NAMM 2010 along with Don Buchla. Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to meet Roger Linn. He was engaged in conversation and I just couldn't interrupt before having to head out. Next year! :)

Various affordable MIDI USB controllers. The Panda Mini combo unit with pads and keys goes for $35. Their booth was right next to John Bowen's booth.
