GAMEBOY / MOOG / JUNO / SPACE ECHO / STRAT

Published on Jul 9, 2014 EXPLORING AUDIO

One more video below.

"This video was an attempt to use as wide a variety of electronic instruments as I possible could, ranging from classics like the Juno 106 and the Roland Space Echo to some newer toys like the Moogerfooger Cluster Flux and the TC Electronics Flashback X4.

The main track was written using Propellerheads Reason. The main drum samples came from a sample pack of Nanoloop drum sounds made by An0va ( https://www.facebook.com/an0va ). After that, I brought the file into Ableton Live where I recorded the instruments you see in the overhead shot that starts at 39 seconds.

The Gameboy is synced to Ableton using an Arduinoboy ( https://code.google.com/p/arduinoboy/ ) and is running LSDJ ( http://www.littlesounddj.com/lsd/ ). During the "verses", the Gameboy plays two tracks of arpeggiated chords and doubles the main melody during the end of the song. The Novation Launch Control is controlling several effects in Ableton but 90% is just allowing me to control what is being sent to the Cluster Flux and the Flashback at different points of the song. I also used Animoog on my iPad to play the ambient higher synth parts during the ending of the song.

The next shot I recorded was the Juno 106 going through the Roland Space Echo. Unfortunately, the self oscillations of the tape echo didn't come through very loudly in the final mix of the song. I plan to dedicated an entire video to the Space Echo soon!

Finally, I recorded the guitar "solo" over the bridge section of the song. I'm playing a 2011 American Fender Stratocaster through a Fulltone OCD and into a Twin Reverb ( with a light amount of amp reverb). Even though I'm only using the one pedal, I still wanted to include a completely gratuitous shot of my pedal board. Also, I tuned my guitar to an open F chord so all of my pull-offs would stay in the key of the song!

Finally, I recorded the entire finished mix of the song out on to an Akai X-150D reel to reel tape recorder. It was my intention to use this recording in the final edit of the video but there were some weird phasing issues that I couldn't resolve and so I went back to the original mix of the song.

I've posted this song on the Exploring Audio Bandcamp page as a "Pay What You Want" download with no minimum. Download it for free if you'd like but any donation is very appreciated and will help me make future videos! I've also included several different mixes of the song, including the version from the reel to reel, one where every track was recorded with the Juno 106, and finally one recorded through the Roland Sound Canvas, a midi module that makes everything sound awesome. GAMEBOY / MONOTRIBE / KAOSS PAD cover of "THE SCORE" by AMINAL

Published on May 1, 2014

"I just got the Monotribe and Kaoss Pad yesterday and immediately wanted to sync the Monotribe to my LSDJ on my Gameboy. I decided to put together an extremely rushed cover of "The Score" by Aminal ( a band I've just recently started playing with ) and run everything into Ableton Live, with a few extra effects added on top ( bitcrusher, reverb, some delay ). Then I added a Gilmore Girls sample ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZJMN... ) and recorded everything to video.

"One used Moog 1120 Foot Pedal (with new battery inside). This foot pedal is an original Moog from Buffalo NY. Works fine - Voltage ranges from 0.1 Volts DC to 8.2 Volts DC with a fresh battery. Minor rust specs. Great condition for its age. Heavy duty metal, not plastic like new pedals."
