Modular synth drone jam with Tune in Tokyo

Published on Sep 3, 2014 ISOTROPOSPHERE

"DIY Fractional rack modular synth drone jam with
Rare Waves - Tune in Tokyo (off camera)

This was several weeks ago during a bout of rainy days which was perfect for drone jams in the studio.

I am pretty sure you can figure out the patch by watching so the modules left to right are: Power supply, Pre-amp, Ring modulator, three channel Mixer, Bi-n-Tic, Microcon.

The Bi-n-Tic filter / oscillator is my own build and conversion to the Frac format from the 5U kit. This sucker is quite different from the eurorack modules. Thanks Bridechamber, Mecanikill, and Profx.

The Steiner Microcon is a diy kit version from Synthcube with a slight machining of the panel to get it to fit side to side and custom knobs. A unique single voice synth in itself, strange to operate and what you can do with it. Is anyone else finding this to be true?

The Rare Waves - Tune in Tokyo is not shown but rather heard quite extensively in this video coming into the pre-amp 1/4 inch jack input. You can see my other video featuring my build of that here on my channel if your curious.

Drone on my friends....."

"People have been asking about this beast and I've been fortunate to have spent a few days with it at STG soundlabs and made a demo video last night of some factory patches/sequences and things I've made myself.

I tried to cover a bunch of different ways of using and sound so I hope you get something out of it."

"Mixtape Alpha is the smallest synthesizer we could make without a prescription. It has a stylophone style input for continuous note generation, and 6 buttons for discrete notes. With 4 voices, 4 effects, and 5 note polyphony there is quite a range of expression. But, the best part is, you can record the songs you make, and trade mixtapes with your friends! Perhaps even better, it’s based on the ATmega328p, and can be hacked to make even crazier sounds than we came up with."

"Sony MX-14 Vintage Portable Mixer A Vintage Mixer for your Vintage Synths. Comes with adapter and can also run on batteries."

Update: A little trivia according to the seller, Tomita used a similar model mixer in some of his recordings, including "Snowflakes are Dancing". Looking at the back of the album you can see the Sony MX-16 and MX-12 listed. The MX-16 does look similar in design. Not sure about specs though. Regardless, it is an interesting bit of trivia.

"This one is in excellent condition and working 100%. It has been professionally serviced & restored by a couple of well known techs and it needs nothing. As you can see, this is an early "muSonics" Minimoog (serial # 1192) which are not too common. These early models are a bit different than those made later. The face is metal with incremental graphics, it has a walnut cabinet, has a squared back panel, clear pitch/mod wheels, no voltage selection like the later models, all cards are RA Moog, etc. This one is especially rare in that it was made in Trumansburg, NY rather than Williamsville like most of these. Likely because it's an earlier muSonics and was made while RA Moog was transitioning to Moog muSonics."
