Quick Tip: Bouncing Ball Effect With Two LFOs Tutorial

Published on Aug 27, 2019 Perfect Circuit

"Here is a quick tip on how to make a bouncing ball modulation effect.

You will need:
- a synthesizer with two LFOs with sawtooth/ramp waveforms.

The patch:
- The first LFO is set to a slower speed and is ramping up
- The first LFO modulates the speed of the second LFO which is faster and ramp down waveform
- The second LFO modulates the filter or VCA

This patch makes the sound of a ball bouncing since there is an opening and closing of a VCA or VCF that continues to speed up the way the bouncing of a ball speeds up as it gets closer to the ground. This is achieved by having a slow ramp up LFO (this is creating the increasing speed) modulate a second LFO that is generating each bounce. To get a gated sound modulate the filter or amplifier with the second LFO, or try modulating something different like the pulse width of an oscillator or the dry wet mix of an effect.

If your LFOs have linear and exponential waveforms try different ones for different speed increasing ramps that sound more or less natural.

This is a direct audio, no effects, just basic realtime tweaking of the wavetable. There are many more built. Check Gearslutz forum, Quantum thread for details (around date Aug 27)."

Radiator update!

Published on Aug 27, 2019 Neon Captain

"We brought Radiator prototypes to SELEM (South Eastern Laser Enthusiasts Meeting). SELEM is the largest gathering of Laserists in the United States and the perfect setting to introduce the Radiator into the Laserist community.

The Radiator was very enthusiastically received (many of the SELEM attendees were Kickstarter backers) and during the week we gathered pages and pages of feedback and notes that we're using to make the Radiator even more amazing.

Right now we're concentrating on optimizing the abstract engine and expanding the color modulation effects. As you can see in this video, the output is buttery smooth and HSV (the Radiator supports HSV and RGB color spaces) color manipulation makes for some really cool effects."

Novation Peak Patches with Spencer Zahn

"We've just released our next round of Peak Patches with the skilled Spencer Zahn! 🎛🎚🎹

"Spencer Zahn the bassist, multi-instrumentalist, and composer, released his debut album People of the Dawn in 2018. He has spent the last several years as an in-demand sideman and collaborator, touring and recording with artists from across a wide musical spectrum.

While traveling as a bassist and keyboard player, Zahn started recording synthesizer experiments in his off time. These experiments - musical snapshots of cities all over the world - became the foundation of People of the Dawn, an album that seeks to merge the chaotic wisdom of jazz improvisation with the warm pulse of electronica. He has since been composing music for a 2019 release featuring some of New York’s finest musicians."

Patch Dissection

Published on Aug 27, 2019 Omri Cohen

"So the idea my Patrons chose this month was to dissect a patch and explore some possibilities on how to build on it. This patch was built by one of my Patrons, Pomeroy Paul, and it's really nice and jazzy. Thank you Paul for letting me mess around with this patch!

By the way, thanks so much to Johno Wells and his lovely daughters for the "And Gals" samples! - https://www.instagram.com/johno_wells...

Polyphony in VCV Rack 1.0

Premiered Jun 25, 2019 Omri Cohen

"One of the biggest features that were introduced in VCV Rack 1.0 is the Polyphonic Cables feature, that allows us to send up to 16 different signals through only one cable and create polyphony, among other things. In this video, I show a few ways of how to use Polyphonic Cables starting with a short introduction, then with using a Midi keyboard and creating your own arpeggiators, and then I showcase a few more ways of using Polyphonic cables and the different polyphonic modules."
