Sequential In The Spotlight Interview with Patrik FK of Kommunity FK

You can find the interview on Sequential's website here.

"Patrik FK, founder/composer/shapeshifter of the highly influential Amerikan Deathrock/Gothic Rock group Kommunity FK, is a multi-instrumentalist, electronic, avant art-rock solo artist and composer who is creating within a genre that he refers to as “Avant Synth Pop Minimalism.”

“I only apply synthesizers to my sonic creations. No guitars are allowed within the making of my music. I compose all of my songs instrumentally first, then reflect on how the result evokes my inner feelings and thoughts. I improvise and just follow my muse. I draw from the DaDaists, Surrealists, and German Expressionists, which have been and influence since my childhood together with my own inner visions.”

Mata performs with a Sequential Mopho x4, drum loops, and drum machines. Patrik performs all vocals as well. No MIDI is used in the design of his music. His synth comes from a blessed endorsement given to him by Dave Smith Instruments in the mid-2000s.

We chatted with Patrik about how he uses the Mopho x4 in his music"

Best Ambient Synth Shootout #79: Kasser DAFM Synth - Song 1

Published on Feb 10, 2020 Christian's Sonic Spaces

"This is the first song with the DAFM Synth [see here for details]. It's an FM synthesizer based on either the YM2612 yamaha chip (used in SEGA Genesis / Megadrive home consoles and various SEGA arcade game systems, including the Mega-Play, System 18, and System 32) or the cleaner sounding YM3438 chip without the crossover distortion in the output. Both sound chips has six channels with four operators per channel.

I used for the recording the following FX chain:
K1r - Alesis Ampliton - Pigtronix Echolution 2 Deluxe - GFI System Specular Reverb 2. Depending on the recorded track some FX are deactivated

The signal went through a Presonus StudioLive 16.0.2 into the PCfor recording. To create the complete song I recorded consecutively several stereo tracks. The final song was then mastered with a bit EQ and compression on some tracks and some limiting on the master track.

Well, I decided to go back to the basics, but at the same time make something useful for the synth community and do a kind of competition (I like competitions;-). What's my best synth for ambient music :-)"

The MCS70 by ELKA's Mario Maggi - Only One In Existence Might Come to Soundmit

Published on Feb 10, 2020 Badilevintage

Details on Soundmit with the pics further below.

"Hello everybody , my Hobby it's restore the old Combo organ and Synth.
In this video i show you the test after restored of ultra rare MCS70 made by Ing. Mario Maggi .
The only piece in the world!!"

[Side note: Mario Maggi was the man behind the ELKA Synthex. There was only one previous post that mentioned the MCS70 here on MATRIXSYNTH posted back in 2006. This had me wondering whether there are any other one-off synths, and what are some of the rarest synths out there? There was the ASE Modular also by Mario Maggi. There is only one S.W.A.N but it shares the same synth engine as the Syntar. There was also the ConBrio ADS, protoype Minimoogs if you want to count them, prototype Orchestron (not technically a synth, but...), the original Acxel Resynthesizer, clear Gleeman Pentaphonic (same engine as the solid black ones though), rare EMS synths, rare PPGs (here and here for example), and I'm sure others I forget at the moment. If you can think of any, leave a comment below! BTW, the New Old Label is a great resource for exploring vintage gear that never appeared on the site before. I highly recommend it and the exclusive labels for some of the more exclusive synths out there.] Also see the first synth to post.

"The rarest synthesizer on Earth comes back to life thanks to the patient restoration work of two passionate Italian technicians

Recently the Soundmit has been involved in an event of those that happen once in a lifetime.
Two longtime friends, passionate about synthesizers, musicians and technicians, have accomplished a feat deemed impossible.

They have completely restored the rarest Italian synthesizer, the MCS70 designed by Mario Maggi, just him ... the father of Elka Synthex.

The MCS70 is a monophonic synth with many surprises inside, perhaps the most evident in the presence of the presets! In an era in which microprocessors were not yet widespread, Maggi succeeded in the enterprise of creating the first analog, monophonic synthesizer with memories!

There is only one MCS70 in the world and has been owned, for almost 40 years, by Patrizio Fariselli, the famous keyboard player of the Progressive Rock band "AREA".

Recently two friends, one technician (Marco Molendi) and the other a musician (Andrea Manuelli), specializing in the restoration of Italian electronic musical instruments, have succeeded in the impossible task of bringing the instrument back to life.

According to the engineer Maggi, it is not possible to give technical details beyond what can be seen in the video.

Francesco Mulassano of Soundmit was invited by Marco and Andrea during the last phase, that of the toast for the goal reached and in fact is one of the very few people in the world who have seen tried and listened to the instrument that, after so many years, remains a jewel of technique and sound.

Special thanks go to engineer Mario Maggi for the work he has done (and continues to do) in our sector.

We hope to hear the MCS70 in new compositions soon and hope to see it at Soundmit in November 2020!"

The Logan Vocalsynth

Logan Vocalsynth Test after restoration Published on Oct 18, 2018 Badilevintage

"Hello everybody , my Hobby it's restore the old Combo organ and Synth.
In this video i show you the test after restored of ultra rare Logan Vocalsynth ."

This is the first post to feature the Logan Vocalsynth.

Update: make that the first demo of one. One came up for sale in 2008 here. I searched on Logan Vocalsynth instead of Logan Vocal Synth so it didn't pop up. Thanks to @kaden_harris for spotting it!

SEQUENTIAL PRO 3 - Sounds, Patches and Presets | Synth Demo

Published on Feb 10, 2020 synth4ever

"Sequential PRO 3 SE synthesizer demo, featuring various sounds, patches and presets. Filmed at Sequential headquarters, this Sequential PRO 3 demo features a variety of sounds including leads, basses, pads, textures, percussion, arpeggiators and sequencer patterns.

The Sequential PRO 3 is a hybrid multi-filter mono synthesizer with 60 knobs and 70 buttons, FATAR 37-note semi-weighted keyboard and 3-voice optional paraphony mode (feat. individually gated envelopes per oscillator). The PRO 3 features 3 oscillators (two VCOs + one wavetable), 3 analog filters, 3 LFOs, 4 loopable envelopes, noise, hard sync, glide, tuned feedback, analog distortion, arpeggiator, 16x16x4 sequencer + 16-track sequencer, dual digital effects engines, touch slider and mod wheels, and a staggering 32-slot mod matrix.

The PRO 3's two analog VCOs each have triangle, saw, pulse waveshapes, with variable shape modulation/pulse width on each. The digital oscillator features 32 digital wavetables of 16 waves each (with wave morphing), plus classic wave shapes (sine, triangle, saw, variable-width pulse) and super saw. The PRO 3's digital osc can also function as an LFO to enable complex wavetable-based modulation.

The Sequential PRO 3 has three filter types, which provide a variety of sound shaping options. Filter 1 is a 4-pole, 24 dB, Prophet-6 low-pass filter. Filter 2 is a classic, 4-pole, 24 dB, transistor ladder filter (w/ optional resonance compensation). Filter 3 is a 2-pole, 12 db, OB-6 state-variable filter which can be continuously varied between low-pass, notch, and high-pass operation, with an optional band-pass mode.

The PRO 3's three syncable LFOs each have phase offset and slew per LFO, and feature five waveshapes: triangle, saw, reverse saw, square, and S&H. There are 4 loopable ADSR envelopes with delay (Filter, VCA, + two Auxiliary envelopes); envelopes are freely assignable to multiple modulation destinations.

The PRO 3 also features dual digital effects, including: Stereo delay, BBD delay, chorus, flanger, phaser, ring mod, vintage rotating speaker, distortion, high-pass filter, super plate reverb. Also on board is analog distortion and tuned feedback (with Grunge mode), for extra-aggressive tonal destruction.

The PRO features a huge 32-slot modulation matrix, with over 46 mod sources and over 171 mod destinations. This allows for a massive amount of sound design possibilities and creative applications. Modulation assignments can be done quickly and easily, and the Mod Matrix runs at audio rates.

The PRO 3's advanced sequencer has three modes: normal, gated, and trigger. There are 16 tracks and 4 linkable 16-step phrases with per-step ratcheting, duration, and velocity as well as multiple playback modes: forward, reverse, forward/reverse, random. The PRO 3 sequencer supports real-time/step input, rests, and variable-length sequences and syncs to MIDI clock and external audio and CV input. Sequences are also freely assignable to any modulation destination.

Also on board the Sequential PRO 3 is a sophisticated arpeggiator with up, down, up+down, random, assign modes. The arp syncs to MIDI clock and external audio and CV inputs, supports re-latching arpeggiation, and runs concurrent with Sequencer for arpeggiated patterns with parameter automation.

In terms of connectivity, the Sequential PRO 3 has 4 CV inputs and 4 CV outputs which enables interaction with other modular or CV-compatible devices. For example, some parameters that can be sent to CV outputs include oscillators, LFOs, envelopes, sequencer tracks and any other source within the modulation matrix. In addition the PRO 3 has Gate Out for triggering external CV-compatible devices, and any CV in can be used as a gate input.

Needless to say, the Sequential PRO 3 is a powerhouse of a monosynth and allows for incredibly deep and complex sound design. The sound can be big, bold, powerful and aggressive but also delicate, airy and atmospheric depending how you program it. The 2 analog VCOs + wavetable oscillator also open up new combinations of sound design that, when combined with the 32-slot mod matrix, provides unparalleled flexibility.

Overall it was an incredible experience to try the PRO 3 SE synth when visiting Sequential headquarters. I filmed nearly 2.5 hours of footage and this demo highlights some of the patches on the machine. I came away extremely impressed with the possibilities from this synth, it is certainly one of the most flexible monos of all time and sounds fantastic. Hope you enjoy this PRO 3 demo.
