Yamaha Portasound PS-1 - bonus demo

Alfonse

"Yamaha Portasound PS-1 keyboard (1980)

This tune was my first (or was it second?) attempt at writing something on the PS-1, before scrapping it in favour of the one I eventually put out a few months back: [posted here]

One of the first three portable keyboards that Yamaha produced for the home market in 1980, the PS-1 was the most compact, with only 4 voices and 4 rhythms to work with.

All sounds you hear in the track were made using the PS-1 and run through various single effects pedals (TC Electronic Sub Up octaver, the very synth-friendly Yamaha SDS CH-10MII chorus pedal, and the Vestax DDX vintage digital delay). Parts were recorded to a DAW, where compression, EQ, and reverb were added as required. Individual drum hits were sampled from slowed-down rhythms and processed to allow fresh beats to be built, rather than using the rhythms found on the PS-1 itself.

Korg ds-10 syncing the korg nts-1, the teenage engineering op-z & ipad: Setup, settings & tutorial

michaelnervous

"Using the Korg ds-10 as a clock source I show you how to setup and sync the ds-10 to the korg nts-1 and the teenage engineering OP-Z (as well as the ipad app for the op-z -motion Graphics).
by making a click track and sending that audio signal into the sync in of the nts-1 and then having the nts-1 send a midi clock signal to the op-z.

And if you are using the iphone/ipad op-z app you then have video in sync to the ds-10 also.
The great thing here is you can basically turn the audio clock source from the Korg ds-10 into midi data and use with ipad apps or an external synth.

BOSS DR-220A LIPO-BATTERY MOD

Robin Sutcliffe wrote in to let us know of a battery mod he completed for the BOSS DR-220A. You can find full details and additional pics for the mod here.

"Last year I bought a DR-220A (A=analogue; the drum set samples, E=electronic) It's a beefy drum machine for it's size, I really enjoy it. With programming the accent and (closed hat cuts off open hat) , you can program some quite swingy beats, even though it's all quantized on the 16th. Also useful (to me) is the trigger in/out functions, where you can step a sequencer, arpeg, or LFO retrigger (anything that accepts a trigger) with the RIM shot in playback mode. (so not just by tapping the RIM shot pad)

The battery compartment had been cleaned up after some obvious leakage and corrosion. This meant that the contacts did not hold well against the batteries themselves, and presets were not saved, even with batteries in the device! Obviously this also meant intermittent performance on battery power.

I decided to replace the 6 AA cells with a 3.7v Lipo battery, charge board, and boost circuit. The boost circuit is needed to take the 3.7v up to 6v needed for operation of the 220A."

You can find 3.7v Lipo batteries on Amazon here, and
via this auction. Be sure to get to the right size.

"Here is a mega rare chance for buy ONE of the THREE listed R.A. MOOG vintage analog modular synthesizer studio cabinet, original from 1969.

[Each] Auction is for ONE of the THREE listed units (photos from 1 to 8 for each ebay list) It come in very good conditions, impressive project! Only few units were made from 1969 and early '70 for large and important Moog modular systems, like CEMS, RA Moog inc. modular Vocoder and percussion synthesizer.

I think it can be used for new MU / 5U Moog modules formats... though it call the originals :-]

There are all the necessary original rails on the modules mounting sectors, the bottom panel modules is original as well, only some wirings are still soldered as the origins. Wood is still in great conditions and a bit of restoration especially on some strips will make them as new!

Those cabs are extremely hard to find or impossible, this is an unique occasion!"

"This is a beautiful late 90's synth that is a "sleeper synth" in my opinion and will only go up in value over time. Amazing for digital transwave synthesis, I consider it THE ambient synth, capable of amazing textures and pads, but also digital textures, and amazing built-in effects with real-time control over the sounds using the five Fizmo knobs on the front. It has a built-in arpeggiator (which can sync to MIDI at various speeds), 4-voice multitimbral (which you can map across the keyboard), aftertouch, and extensive filtering capabilities, which outperform most synths, even to this day."

"Emax 1 HD SE rack with OLED screen and SCSI2SD drive installed. The old 20mb hard drive was replaced with a v5.1 scsi2sd drive and configured for 4 x 20mb drives on the included sd card. I’m including a boot disk but the unit can also be booted from the internal drive.

The unit is serviced and in great shape, with some tape residue. Power cable included."

"Super clean and fully functional, this legendary CS-50 is in excellent condition. I have had it serviced and recapped all of the boards and modded the voice cards with an LED that lights up when the voice is active (makes for easier tuning and servicing)."
