Superbooth 2023: Joranalogue - Modular System

video upload by sonicstate

"We spoke to Joran from Joranalogue at Superbooth 2023, who presented modular systems showcasing the Joranalogue system, their concept of truly patch programmable analog synthesis. It aims to provide a true system that allows you to immediately patch something up with modules and go for it without any menu diving, endless manuals to read, or firmware to update. Joran demonstrated some patches using the setups which were built three sizes, a small performance system with two rows, a bigger studio case with five rows, and the rather huge East Coast monster."

Superbooth 2023: Rides In The Storm - SED CSM Synth Module

video upload by sonicstate

"We spoke to Uwe George from Rides In The Storm, who showcased their upcoming SED CSM voice module at Superbooth 2023. This all discrete component module features three sub-oscillators, a wave folder, ring modulator, noise generator, and a mixer. Additionally, it boasts two envelope generators with two trigger outs, a glide function, and LFO sections with shape function and sample and hold. The module also includes a 24dB discrete filter unit with overdrive and a VCA with modulation in for tremolo effect. The patch field provides access to all the functions, and the module will be available in shops in June for around €420.

In addition to the acid DC's M voice model, Rides In The Storm also unveiled the BOC, a second oscillator module that includes four sub-oscillators, a wave folder, sinus out, and CV control. The sub-oscillators can be set independently in pulse width and pulse width modulation, and the first oscillator can be set with three different waveforms. The Buck module will be available in the summer for around €160. Rides In The Storm also previewed the Storm Nest case, a slim travel case that fits all their skiff models and comes with a travel bag and an internal power supply. The case will be available for around €200.

Superbooth 2023: DinSync - RE-101 Keyboard Synthesizer Based on the Roland SH-101

video upload by sonicstate

"We spoke to Paul from DinSync at Superbooth 2023 about their new product, the RE-101, which is a replica of the Roland SH-101. The RE-101 is built from parts that are 100% compatible with the original SH-101 board. Paul mentioned that they have made a replica of the original SEM VCO, which was used in the original Roland machine. They are also working with Analog Renaissance, the premier experts on the 3109 circuit, to create a chip that is indistinguishable from the original. This chip is especially brilliant in the distortion of the resonance, which is what sets it apart from other clones in the market. DinSync's unique selling point is that they want to make a machine that is as authentic as possible to the original and becomes legacy spare parts.

DinSync's RE-101 is the perfect solution for customers that haven't had spare parts for over 30 years. Service centers have been shut down over the past 10 years, making it impossible to get service for an old vintage Japanese machine. Paul said that the filter on the RE-101 is so integral to the SH-101 sound, as it produces the classic slightly distorted resonance. The SH-101 was Paul's first synth when he was a young lad, so this product is a real labor of love. The RE-101 will be available as a kit in the future, so customers can build a brand new machine or repair their vintage machine.

Price: TBC. More info:

Superbooth 2023: Elta Music - Solar 42 - Microtonal Ambient Drone Machine

video upload by sonicstate

"At Superbooth 2023, we spoke to Szabo from Elta Music about Solar 42. This ambient drone machine consists of six drone voices with two added VCOs. The Solar 42 comes with a brand new touch-responsive keyboard with built-in arpeggiator, portamento, vibrato, and quantizers that can be disabled to edge the synth into the microtonal world. The mixer has gain potentiometers for all the voices and the voices can be freely panned from left to right. The Solar 42 also includes a stereo VCF, stereo effect processor, and different algorithms including reverb and delay. The solar synth is semi-modular, has voltage inputs, and no presets. The solar synth is expected to be in production this summer, and its retail price is estimated at $1500.

The Solar 42 is expected to be available in stores from May onwards."

Superbooth 2023: Jomox - Alpha Base 2 - Mod FM - Moonwind MK II

video upload by sonicstate

"We spoke to Jurgen from Jomox at Superbooth 2023, where he introduced two new products. Firstly, the Mod FM, which had been announced last year, will finally be available later this year. It is an eight-voice, four-operator FM synth with analog filters, and has improvements from the first version. The sound engine is the same as the original version, but now with CV outputs and inputs, and more hotkeys and buttons. Additionally, there is the Moonwind Mark II, a stereo filter with a sequencer and some improvements from the first version, including a touchpad where users can edit the cutoff steps and an inbuilt effects processor.

Jomox is still selling the Alpha Base, and both the Mod FM and Moonwind Mark II will be available in late summer or fall 2023.

Moonwind Price: around 850 Euros

Mod FM Price: 1,000 Euros"

Superbooth 2023: BeepBoop - Tape Rack - Cassette Tape SOS Recorder In Eurorack

video upload by sonicstate

"We spoke to Monojack from Beepboop at Superbooth 2023 about his new customizable tape machine Tape Rack. The product is 8 days old, surely the newest thing at Superbooth this year, and is the result of Monojack's obsession with experimenting with sound by experiencing it in the moment, rather than judging it. The idea of Tape Rack is to design your own custom tape machine using different parts and arranging them in your own order to capture a moment in time, use it as a delay, or a sound-on-sound recording device. During the interview, Monojack demonstrated the versatility of Tape Rack by adding different modules and effects, creating unique sounds.

Superbooth 2023: Norand Mono MKII - Modulate and Morph Everything

video upload by sonicstate

"We spoke to Mathieu from Norand about their new synth, Norand MK 2, a fully analog synthesizer with a sequencer and super fast patch-changing. While it may appear to be a basic synthesizer at first glance, the device offers an array of features that make it pretty deep. For instance, each parameter has its own modulator and envelope, allowing users to modulate the filter and add an LFO on the frequency with ease. The sequencer allows users to sequence notes and patches, making it easy to achieve something really interesting in just a few minutes.

The oscillator is a triangle core that is slightly skewed, giving it a unique sound. The filter is fully continuous and state-variable, allowing users to move between band pass, low pass, and high pass. The super quick patch shifting even allows you to turn the synth into a drum machine, the pads have x, y and z pressure sensitivity and is capable of moving between standard synth sounds and deep into glitchy weird territory.

Norand MK 2 Available June 2023. Price: 840 Euros"

Why to Love the Korg NTS-2 Oscilloscope (spoiler: because it's WAY more than just a scope)

video upload by Rochefsky

"On my modular eurorack system I take my oscilloscope / tuner for granted - and on my desktop synths I really needed a similar solution. I always need a tuner, I often want to see the shape of the audio or LFO modulation waves I'm using, I also often want to check the voltage outputs of certain CV signals - and with my semi-modulars - like the Moog Mother-32 or Grandmother synth, I could really use a secondary LFO for modulation - and I'm not always near my eurorack system for that.
The Korg NTS-2 Oscilloscope has become my perfect answer. It was a $229 kit (including a beautiful $45 hardcover book...) and does all of the above with loads of options.
In this video I'm just giving an overview of most of the features in case you're considering it and want a walkthrough before you buy.
Here's what's in the video:
0:00 - intro
1:07 - inputs/outputs
2:15 - controls
2:45 - modes
3:05 - Scope
6:00 - Wave Generator
9:20 - FFT / Spectrum
10:25 - Tuner
11:38 - Global Settings
12:10 - surprise.

Using an #oscillator is a great learning tool and a sound design tool - and the Korg NTS-2 not only gives you that, but so much more."
