NSynth Super - An Open Source Hardware Neural Synthesizer From Google

Published on Mar 13, 2018 Google

[Update: You can now find an order form on Auxren's website here for assembled PCBs minus the case.

Update2 via Koryo Williamson in the comments: "I'll post STEP and STL files for cases that more resemble the active UI version. Xometry, Protolabs, DIY 3D print and such."

Update3: Just a side not for those interested: the neural synthesis brings the Hartmann Neuron to mind, and the resynthesis aspect brings the Technos Axcel and the Axcel2 to mind.]

Playlist for the videos above:
1. Making music with NSynth Super
London-based producer Hector Plimmer, explores new sounds generated by the NSynth machine learning algorithm - using NSynth Super an open source experimental instrument.
2. Making music using new sounds generated with machine learning [featuring Robotspeak]
NSynth Super is an open source experimental instrument. It gives musicians the ability to explore completely new sounds generated by the NSynth machine learning algorithm.

Note NSynth was first mentioned in this post with Andrew Huang.

"NSynth Super is part of an ongoing experiment by Magenta: a research project within Google that explores how machine learning tools can help artists create art and music in new ways.

Google Doodle Featuring Minimoog Played by Clara Schumann

Bottom left. You can check it out on Google's homepage now. They have the following to say on Clara Shummann:

"A doodle for Clara seemed like an obvious choice due to her enormous talents that started when she was still just a little one. Considered a child prodigy, her first concert was at the age of 11. Upon further research we realized there was also quite an amazing story beyond what she's most widely remembered for. She was an outspoken and courageous woman who followed her heart and fought for who and what she believed in. In sixty one years of performing, she forever shaped the classical music genre and was one of the first pianists to perform by memory, setting the stage for future performers.

Beyond her own performance career, Clara was a teacher and a mentor to students. Additionally, her and her husband raised eight children while also developing their own musical careers. I knew Clara was a truly exceptional person when I read that at age 29 she marched to the front lines of the May Uprising in Dresden (one of the final events of the Revolution of 1848), straight past a group of armed men to rescue her children. She then turned around and marched right back through the pack and out of the city. She was truly a dedicated, passionate and strong-willed person and it's evident in her work, how she was with her family, and in her everyday life."

BENT: The Google Moog Mini-Doc - Story Behind the Moog Google Doodle

Uploaded on Dec 21, 2012 googleplay·208 videos

"Get free tracks from Carl Craig, El-P, Divine Fits and Exitmusic: http://goo.gl/DkYIB

In May of 2012, Google turned its homepage over to Moog, creating a playable version of one of their synthesizers. The synth "Doodle" was used by over 300 million users, and brought a new level of attention to the Asheville, N.C.-based company. Acknowledging this, Moog, as part of their 3rd Annual Circuit Bending Contest held during the Moogfest music event, called for enthusiasts and benders to create a sampler and use the Google Moog Doodle as the basis for it's sounds. The winning sampler was unlike anything we'd ever seen, and we contacted some of our favorite musicians, including Detroit techno pioneer Carl Craig and hip-hop icon El-P, to create or rework songs using this new tool. The resulting tracks and documentary chronicle the dynamic relationship between technology and music, and how each field pushes the other in unpredictable and amazing directions.

Moog Doodle Hack from Max6 for Bob Moog's birthday !

YouTube Published on May 23, 2012 by julienbayle

"(Stay tune about the latest software I'm releasing on app store these days: http://youtu.be/r_8rpgIlzUU)

Google Made us a great present today for the Bob Moog's birthday: The Moog Doodle.
Because I like to hack, to play, because I like random noises & strange shuffle, I made this little hack simulating mouse cursor movement & click from Max/MSP (= Max6 today..)

I also used Ableton Live to play some 808 beats using some follow actions & tricky clip launching options we, certified trainers, only know :D Kidding. You can do that easily.

And here is that electronic glitchy & software hack strange result: The Acid Bob's Birthday !

MAke more like to totally control the synth from Ableton Live or any MIDI player would be easy.
As soon as you have the "box" that convert a MIDI note pitch into a position on the screen, you can do that.
I'm SORRY I don't have time for that right now.. But we can discuss about that on http://designthemedia.com/index my forums)

"In the mid-1960s, Dr. Robert Moog unleashed a new universe of sounds into musicdom with his invention of the electronic analog Moog Synthesizer. The timbre and tones of these keyboard instruments (true works of art in and of themselves) would come to define a generation of music, featuring heavily in songs by The Beatles, The Doors, Stevie Wonder, Kraftwerk and many others.

When people hear the word “synthesizer” they often think “synthetic”—fake, manufactured, unnatural. In contrast, Bob Moog’s synthesizers produce beautiful, organic and rich sounds that are, nearly 50 years later, regarded by many professional musicians as the epitome of an electronic instrument. “Synthesizer,” it turns out, refers to the synthesis embedded in Moog’s instruments: a network of electronic components working together to create a whole greater than the sum of the parts.

With his passion for high-tech toolmaking in the service of creativity, Bob Moog is something of a patron saint of the nerdy arts and a hero to many of us here. So for the next 24 hours on our homepage, you’ll find an interactive, playable logo inspired by the instruments with which Moog brought musical performance into the electronic age. You can use your mouse or computer keyboard to control the mini-synthesizer’s keys and knobs to make nearly limitless sounds. Keeping with the theme of 1960s music technology, we’ve patched the keyboard into a 4-track tape recorder so you can record, play back and share songs via short links or Google+.

Much like the musical machines Bob Moog created, this doodle was synthesized from a number of smaller components to form a unique instrument. When experienced with Google Chrome, sound is generated natively using the Web Audio API—a doodle first (for other browsers the Flash plugin is used). This doodle also takes advantage of JavaScript, Closure libraries, CSS3 and tools like Google Web Fonts, the Google+ API, the Google URL Shortener and App Engine.

Special thanks to engineers Reinaldo Aguiar and Rui Lopes and doodle team lead Ryan Germick for their work, as well as the Bob Moog Foundation and Moog Music for their blessing. Now give those knobs a spin and compose a tune that would make Dr. Moog smile!

Thank you to Bob Moog for changing my life, as well as bringing an incredible form of musical expression into the world."

Update: the Moog Doodle Quick Start Guide and the inside story on Mashable.

"When Google’s Chief Doodler Ryan Germick and Google Engineer Joey Hurst decided they wanted to build the Google Moog Synthesizer Doodle, it was to 'Pay tribute to someone who was like a patron saint of the nerdy arts,' said Germick.

Germick told Mashable that he was a huge Robert Moog fan. Moog, who died in 2005 and would have been 78 today, developed what is widely recognized as the first commercial synthesizer. Previous versions were the size of closets. Germick called him 'a passionate toolmaker.'

Hurst and Germick collaborated on last year’s playable Les Paul guitar Google Doodle, but it was Germick who brought this project to Hurst — who actually celebrated his birthday one day before Moog’s — as a kind of a challenge. 'Joey is an amazing engineer and I love to come up with a way to stump him,' explained Germick.

The concept was to recreate the Mini Moog Analog Synthesizer in a Web browser. Germick thought there was no way it could be done. Hurst, who knew someone who owned an original Moog, was instantly excited by the project..."

First post: Google Celebrates Bob Moog

Google Celebrates Bob Moog

I thought I'd start the day with a post in honor of Bob Moog. He would have been 78 today - in Japan that is. :) Bob Moog's birthday is technically tomorrow, May 23. It's still the 22nd in the US, UK and Europe, but not in Japan and soon the rest of Asia. Midnight hit just over an hour ago and in honor of Bob Moog's birthday, Google Japan has the playable image to the left on their homepage: www.google.co.jp/ (thanks goes to synthwood for sending it in)! A little birdy told me there would be something big at midnight tonight, I'm hopeing this will be on the rest of Google's local homepages. Think about it. For one day, all of the world will see this. That is pretty awesome.

Don't forget Moog Music will be donating 50% of all online clothing and merchandise to the Bob Moog Foundation and for every $350 they will donate one Etherwave Theremin to the Foundation's educational program, Dr. Bob's SoundSchool. It's a great initiative to bring arts and electronic music to kids. You can find the full details including videos in this post.

Moog Music clothing and merchandise can be purchased from the company’s online store: www.moogmusic.com/products/clothing and http://www.moogmusic.com/products/Merch

Update: it's also on https://www.google.com.au/ and it is playable.
