Sequential Circuits Co. Model 800 Sequencer ex. Frederic Mercier (serviced) SN 00222

"Vintage Sequential Circuits Co. Model 800 Sequencer in perfect working condition. It’s just been serviced and ready for the future. The service report is part of the sale as a proof of what’s been done.

I bought this rare sequencer from the French composer Frederic Mercier. Sequences can be recorded into one of the 16 “banks”, each capable of holding 16 notes. These can be played back individually or as one continuous sequence playing from the leftmost bank to the rightmost.

Optically it’s in great condition considering its age, with minor signs of use. There are a few scratches on it and little wear and tear on the housing and knobs...

It’s working on 230v and the serial number is: 00222"

synth4ever

https://www.switchedonaustin.com

A synth studio and store tour of Switched-On in Austin, Texas -- including the Switched On synthesizer showroom, walk-through of the Switched On synth store and brief highlight of the synthesizer repair area.

During a trip to Austin in early 2020 I had a chance to revisit the Switched On synth shop I first toured in 2018 [video bellow]. Switched On have since moved from their original location to a new spot and are under new ownership, so it was a great opportunity to see the new synth store.

This synth studio and store walkthrough showcases Switched On's extensive record collection, tape machines, various synthesizers, modular gear, classic vintage synths, rack units and more. To learn more about Switched On, visit https://www.switchedonaustin.com

Sequential Circuits Model 800 CV / Gate Sequencer + Roland SH-2

"Various improvised performance abilities with this amazing old sequencer hand built by Dave Smith himself.
Externally clocked by a simple square wave oscillator.

Pre programming is dead simple and accomplished similarly to the way old school Roland sequencers were programmed.. Just play a series of notes on the keyboard.

This machine has 16 banks of up to 16 notes. It moves freely through them and you can enable and disable on the fly. Amazing tool that no other sequencer, somehow, has matched to this day.

Like the Roland CSQ 100 and 600, this sequencer can be used for either live performance of CV notes from keyboard or step performance of CV notes from keyboard. The video is all step performance. Notes were added to each bank by simply enabling the bank, hitting the start-record button and playing them one at a time from the keyboard, in no particular rhythm, then hitting stop-record."

"This is an extremely rare and amazingly intuitive sequencer. It belongs with someone who will use it more than i do. It's one of the finest Cv/Gate sequencers ever made due to it's logical layout and improvisational capabilities. More on that later...

There were only around 500 made, and they were hand made by Dave Smith himself. He started his entire company Sequential Circuits based on this round of sequencer sales, which then provided his business foundation for developing the Prophet 5 and other major musical instrument milestones .

And what's more is that of the 500, only the first 50 or so had the capability of working with both V/Octave standard AND Hz/V standard. This is one of them. It is serial number 0041, and presumably this capability was more expensive due to the pricier D/A conversion necessary for the higher resolution.

AND, what's even more, is that this is one of a small handful that had a mod done to the unit (by Dave Smith) that allows for musical rests to be placed between notes. One can add as many single beat rests as any sequence can fit.

You are buying a major piece of history here.

Ok, so now for the depths...

Vintage Sequential Circuits MODEL-800 Sequencer SN 00209 w/ Foot Switch

"Vintage Sequential Circuits Model 800 Sequencer with Foot Switch

This unit has been fully tested with a dotcom modular system. All functions have been tested and found to be working as designed.

This unit comes with the rare foot switch. Two of the LEDs appear to have been replaced; they burn a little brighter than the rest.

A switch has been added to the back of the unit to allow the output jacks for CV and Gate to be directly connected to the input jacks for CV and Gate. This is beneficial for patching configurations where the source synth keyboard is not the playback synth. The switch is toggled back and forth between recording and playback.

Cosmetic condition is very good with only some scratches and scuffs on the top and sides."

1979 Keyboard Magazine Interview with Dave Smith

On how it all began:

"It wasn't until 1972, when he saw and immediately bought a Minimoog, that Smith began to consolidate these two areas [music & engineering]. He began making tapes with his new synthesizer and a four-track tape deck, but before long he had grown dissatisfied with that setup. 'Granted, there are a million things you can do with the Minimoog that most people don't even get near touching, but still everything is pretty much pre-patched, and I wanted to start doing more,' he explains. Starting from scratch, Dave soon built his own analog sequencer, which also functioned as a waveform generator when interfaced with a keyboard.

'When I finished it,' he relates, 'I realized that maybe someone else would want one, and that I might try to sell one. I guess that's how Sequential Circuits officially got started.' In 1974 the company name was trademarked, and Dave, working literally out of a closet in his one-bedroom apartment, began marketing and improving his Model 600 sequencer in his spare time. By late 1975, with his lab spilling over into the extra bedroom of another apartment, he was building the digital Model 800 sequencers. After a while he was renting workspace in Sunnyvale, in the area known as Silicon Valley, the heart of California's computer country, plugging in a telephone answering machine to take orders, and hiring assemblers. But it wasn't until April 1977, just after designing his synthesizer programmer, that Smith quit his regular job and began devoting his full energies to Sequential Circuits."

You'll find the full interview and a great write-up on the history of Sequential Circuits on Keyboard Magazine's online site here.
