Patching Sound: Understanding modular synthesis

video upload by moogfoundation

"Want to get hands-on with a modular synth? This Moogseum exhibit, new in summer 2022, lets people patch in -- and explore what it's like to play and perform on a modular synthesizer.

Sound designer Reek Havok, who created the custom, interactive exhibit, talks about how Patching Sound fulfills the Bob Moog Foundation's goals of sharing the history behind modular synthesis, and the technology within the modules -- both in a way that's accessible to all ages and all of our visitors.

Exhibit funded in part by synth pioneer Dave Rossum of E-mu Systems.

Thank you North Carolina Humanities for awarding us a grant for Patching Sound!

Why does this iconic Minimoog have a pitch ribbon?

video upload by moogfoundation

"Short answer: to bend pitch like the greats its owner -- keyboardist, synth programmer, and musical director David Rosenthal, formerly of Rainbow -- was listening to. Enter here; the raffle ENDS August 31 at 11:59 p.m. ET/3:59 a.m. UTC: https://bit.ly/SummerMinimoogRaffle2022

We're awarding this fully restored vintage Minimoog to one lucky winner."

A few pics from the raffle.

Update: apparently there are at least two other Minimoog with ribbon controllers. See below.

Another Minimmog with pitch ribbon via @MrDuckbutt

"The Minimoog I bought from @BrianKehew long ago has this same mod. Geddy Lee’s Minimoog from his Keyboard magazine ‘84 shoot has it as well. Seen it online a handful of times - I wonder how many of these are out there"

And one with it on the left side panel via Till Kopper @realqwave

"And this is not the only Minimoog with a pitchbend ribbon. Mine got this too. I had a warn out pitchwheel when I bought my cheap Minimoog 1983. I built a new housing myself (beech wood) and added the ribbon. The modwheel moved to the left. The right wheel is not connected."

Classic Bob Moog Image Colorized

via The Bob Moog Foundation

On a meaningful anniversary, we remember Bob's life and legacy with a hand-colorized art poster

Memories weren't meant to be seen in black and white

In observance of the date of Bob's passing in 2005, August 21, we remember his life and legacy with a painstakingly colorized poster of a black-and-white photo of him, which we now offer as a collectible art poster available online.

"Every day, I try to seize new opportunities and realize my dreams by looking for people who inspire me to this day. Thank you, Bob Moog, for bringing me the sound of the future,” Dutch visual artist Leslie van Berkel said about the project. “Michelle Moog-Koussa has given me her trust to give her father's legacy a second life by displaying her memories in full color.”

A self-described fan of synthesizers and the Bob Moog legacy, van Berkel reached out to us regarding his desire to pay tribute with the colorization of a historic photo – with complete dedication to representing colors as they were the day the photo was taken.

Together, Leslie and our executive director, Michelle, chose one of the most iconic photos of Bob ever taken: a mid-'70s photo of the inventor striking a stoic pose in the back room of Moog Music, Inc. in Buffalo, NY; arms folded, surrounded by several of the iconic synthesizers he helped create.

Leslie corresponded with Michelle on the exact color and texture of the shirt Moog is wearing in the photo, using rare photos from the Moog Family Archives as a reference for his skin, hair, and eye color.

“Your detailed description of your father's shirt gave me goosebumps,” van Berkel emailed as they collaborated across time zones. His colorized image is historically accurate down to Michelle's recollection of the exact shades of blue-gray in the stripes of Bob’s button-down shirt.

This 18 x 24 serigraph is printed on heavy stock art paper by Matt Pflahlert of The Silent P. Big Moog love to Leslie van Berkel for the donation of his time and talent! We are honored to remember Bob by offering a brand new way to experience this iconic photograph.

“Memories are not meant to be seen in black and white."

Bob Moog Foundation Raffles Off David Rosenthal's Minimoog Signed by Billy Joel

video upload by moogfoundation

David Rosenthal, Billy Joel's keyboardist/musical director, talks about the 2022 summer raffle Mini

"The Minimoog raffled in 2022 isn’t just signed by an icon: It belonged to Billy Joel’s musical director, a musician of note in his own right – keyboardist, synth programmer, and orchestrator David Rosenthal, formerly of Rainbow, who has toured with Cyndi Lauper, Robert Palmer, and Enrique Iglesias, programmed synths for Bruce Springsteen, and also worked with Happy the Man, Steve Vai and Red Dawn.
Video recorded at Strange Cranium in NYC.
Get your own raffle ticket here: https://bit.ly/MinimoogBillyJoel"

"This summer, somebody's going to win a fully restored, vintage Minimoog signed by Billy Joel.

It's a good month when Tom Oberheim joins your team of supporters, and Billy Joel signs your Minimoog. It's still pretty crazy out there, but with Tom, Billy, and a network of supporters engaging in our mission to inspire people of all ages through the intersection of science, music, and technology, we feel ready to take on the world.

This vintage beauty belonged to Billy Joel's long-time keyboardist and musical director, David Rosenthal, who took it on tour with Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow in the 1980s.

It now bears the signature of one of the most beloved and best-selling entertainers of all time.

Somebody's going to win it for the cost of a raffle ticket."

New Patching Sound Exhibit Opens at the Moogseum & Ikutaro Kakehashi's An Age Without Samples

via The Bob Moog Foundation where you'll find additional details.

"We're excited to share that the Moogseum has had a busy winter and early spring! We were closed for construction in January and February, which allowed us to expand our space to accommodate new exhibits. We spent the month of March creating the latest addition to our family of interactive exhibits, Patching Sound: Understanding Modular Synthesis.

Patching Sound provides visitors with a hands-on opportunity to patch, or create, sounds on a synthesizer interface by connecting various modules that control individual parameters of sound. The custom-designed exhibit was created by Los Angeles-based Sounds Amazing.

Patching Sound was made possible by a generous donation from Dave and Karen Rossum, with additional support from North Carolina Humanities, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, and by donors like you!

A large, fully restored, historic R.A. Moog modular synthesizer, originally created in 1968, serves as the inspirational backdrop for the interactive installation. As part of its storied provenance, this synthesizer was used on the soundtrack of Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now. You can read more about its history here.

Come experience Patching Sound: Understanding Modular Synthesis at the Moogseum! We are open from 11-5 seven days a week."

"Ikutaro Kakehashi's An Age Without Samples Now Available On Bob Moog Foundation Online Store

We are proud to now be offering An Age Without Samples by synthesizer pioneer Ikutaro Kakehashi in our online store. This 312-page hardcover book was published the same year that its revered author passed away. An Age Without Samples explores such themes as the resurrection of the venture spirit of the '60s and '80s, creativity, and originality. It is replete with examples from his own experiences and storied career and is generously illustrated with scores of rarely seen photos.

Read more about An Age Without Samples and purchase it here.

We send our deep thanks to Ikuo Kakehashi for donating these books to the Bob Moog Foundation so that we could share them with our worldwide community of supporters and generate funding for our innovative work."

Bob Moog Fondation 2022 - 2023 18 Month Calendar

via Signal Sounds, available here

The Bob Moog Fondation is a charitable organisation, based in Anaheim, North Carolina, just a few streets away from the current Moog factory. It acts both as a archive for Bob's work over the years, a museum to show the timeline of his inventions (and more general synth developement) and an educational resource for schools providing hands on experience for children and adults.

Imgaine you had to do all those things? It's pretty certain you'd quickly lose track of what day it is, what week it is or even what month it is (signs of recognition and enthusiastic ndoding from fellow COVID brain fog peepz at the back of the crowd)?

What you would need in that case is.....a calendar! Obviously you can get calendars with amazing inspritation quotes, beautifull sunsets and cute animals but what if you could get an unbelievalbe nerdy synth related calander featuring 18 of the world's most influential synth designers? That would be pretty freakin' cool, no?

"We are proud to announce the release of our epic 2022 Synthesizer Pioneers 18-month calendar, which honors 18 innovators in the field of synthesis from the past 60 years. This is the fifth calendar released by the Foundation focusing on the rich history of Bob Moog’s legacy and the web of innovation in synthesis to which he was connected.

This calendar is the first to bring to the fore the historic achievements of synthesizer pioneers from all over the world. It features:

Harry Olsen and Herbert Belar (RCA)
Harald Bode
Raymond Scott
Bob Moog
Don Buchla
Peter Zinovieff (EMS)
Alan R. Pearlman (ARP)
Ikutaro Kakehashi (Roland)
Fumio Mieda (KORG)
Tom Oberheim
Dave Smith
Roger Linn
Wolfgang Palm (PPG)
Dave Rossum
Peter Vogel and Kim Ryrie (Fairlight)
Ray Kurzweil
Felix Visser (Synton)
Makoto Fukuda (Casio)
Many of the pioneers have contributed historic photos of themselves, with their hallmark inventions from their private archives. Also included within the calendar are scores of dates of particular historic importance provided by the pioneers. A brief narrative is included with each photo.

The 18-month calendar also weaves together connections between Bob Moog and many of the featured pioneers. His relationships with them ranged from inspiration to friends to colleagues to business associates. Secondary photos on many of the pages highlight that connection, showing Bob with his fellow pioneers.

The 18-month calendar is printed on #80 stock paper, making the images suitable for framing after the year is over!

This is the first time any of the Moog Foundation's products have been availabe outside of the USA so we're pretty happy to be able to bring it to you, and a portion of the profits are re-invested in the Bob Moog Foundation so it's a win/win situation.

The calander runs from Jan 2022 until May 2023 (and before you ask, we have no idea why it's an 18 month calendar...maybe they're just relaly indecisive and couldn't cut the list of synth pioneers down from 18 to 12?) and is available right now, right here.

Malcom Cecil Has Passed Away

Another synth legend has passed away. Anyone that regularly visits this site should know who he is.

via The Bob Moog Foundation

"It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share the passing of the legendary creative genius, musician, engineer, producer, and synthesizer pioneer, Malcolm Cecil, shown here with his creation TONTO (The Original New Timbral Orchestra, created in 1968). Malcom's son Milton informed us that he passed away at 1:17am this morning after a long illness.

Bob Moog and Malcolm had a deep mutual respect and affection for each other, remaining lifelong friends after working together to assure that the Moog components of TONTO were properly integrated into the system. Our hearts are heavy with the loss of such a monumental contributor to the Moog legacy and a truly stellar, generous, kind human being. Our love goes out to his family and friends.

You can see Malcolm talking about TONTO in this video from the National Music Centre | Centre National de Musique, where TONTO now resides:"

Malcolm Cecil on Creating TONTO

video by National Music Centre

"TONTO is an acronym for The Original New Timbral Orchestra. It was created by Malcom Cecil and Robert Margouleff in 1968 , and marked the first attempt at creating a universal language for different synthesizers to communicate with each other, which was revolutionary at the time.

Now housed at Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre, TONTO is being used for a new generation of artists to create music.

Your donation directly shapes the future of Canadian music by providing music education programs, world-class artist development programs, and one-of-a-kind opportunities for collaboration. And via Wikipedia:

"Malcolm Cecil (born 9 January 1937) is a British jazz bassist and Grammy Award-winning record producer.

Born in London, Cecil was a founding member of the UK's leading jazz quintet of the late 1950s, The Jazz Couriers,[1] before going on to join a number of British jazz combos led by Dick Morrissey, Tony Crombie and Ronnie Scott in the late 1950s and early 1960s. He later joined Cyril Davies and Alexis Korner to form the original line-up of Blues Incorporated.

He later joined Robert Margouleff to form the duo TONTO's Expanding Head Band, a project based on a unique combination of synthesizers which led to them collaborating on and co-producing several of Stevie Wonder's Grammy-winning albums of the early 1970s."

'Keith Emerson was more than his music. He was more than massive modular synthesizers, knives in organs, incomparable keyboard technique, savant-level musicianship, and spinning pianos. Keith Emerson was a fearless, revolutionary visionary who used technology and the transcendental language of music to demonstrate for all of us that surmounting monumental challenges could reap rewards of cosmic proportion.' - Michelle Moog-Koussa

moogfoundation

"As we prepare to turn the page on 2020, we pause to reflect on all that has taken place for us at the Bob Moog Foundation. We have faced some great challenges, and made some great accomplishments, and we want to thank you more than ever for your support throughout this year. As we continue to adapt and explore new ways to serve both our local and global communities, we are deeply grateful for all of your support!

Many thanks to all of you who have supported our innovative path forward.
