Control In Solidarity with Black Lives

via the Control newsletter:

"Hello Friends,

This week, we will be donating a portion of our sales to the nonprofit Equal Justice Initiative, who have been working for community-based reform since 1989.

We firmly stand in solidarity with Black Lives, and will continue to protest for the wrongful deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and countless black lives that have been ended by police brutality and systemic racism in the United States. These are our loved ones, our fellow musicians, our neighbors who greet us, and community members that uplift our lives. We will not allow these injustices to pass and demand accountability.

The following are resource kits given to us by friends and family that encompasses education, volunteering, legal help, memorial funds, and organizations. This is offered in multiple languages and in various regions of the United States. Please share widely with your friends and loved ones:

CONTROL: TAREK ATOUI ORGAN WITHIN MAY 3- JUNE 25 NYC

via CONTROL

http://www.kurimanzutto.com

ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE:

May 7–11: Keith Fullerton Whitman
May 14–18: C. Lavender
May 28–June 1: C. Spencer Yeh
June 4–8: Chuck Bettis
June 18–22: Victoria Shen

PERFORMANCES EVERY SATURDAY AT 3PM

kurimanzutto presents Tarek Atoui’s project “Organ Within” at its cabinet space in New York City. Operating as an open sound laboratory, and instrumentarium, “Organ Within” is the result of his ongoing collaboration with instrument-makers Léo Maurel and Vincent Martial, and their research into historical church pipe organs, modular synthesizers, and the sonic experiences of deaf people.

As host and activator of the project, CONTROL has invited a diverse group of sound artists and musicians from New York’s experimental music community to venture and play the organ at kurimanzutto in New York. This group of collaborators will occupy the cabinet space one week at a time, to work with the instrument for research and recording purposes. These residencies, curated in collaboration with Robert Aiki Aubery Lowe, will be open to the public, with a weekly performance held every Saturday at 3p.

Control: Ben Kudler // PFH #13 - Live at Control, Brooklyn NY

"Pennies from Heaven, a collaboration between Control and Bánh Mì Verlag, is a series focused on contemporary experimental culture with an emphasis on the liminal and the underrepresented.

Sound artist and musician Ben Kudler’s (b. 1967) story began in the London Nightclub scene. This early period was labeled by critics and detractors as evocative of cryogenic freezing and ruptured stasis. Notable during this period is Kudler volunteering to be placed into cryotasis.

This evening, the artist will present a new work: Piece For Channa Horwitz (Sonakinatography I Movement #III) In Four Parts.

Kudler has released music on Unifactor, Salon and Bahn Mi Verlag, to name a few.

Please note that seating is limited. After 7pm, reserved tickets may be distributed to standbys. Performance will promptly start at 7:15; once the performance begins no entry will be permitted. Do not be late. Suggested donation is on a sliding scale from $7 - $15."

Control Presents La Synthèse Humaine - Workshop #3 "...All Under Voltage Control"

via CONTROL

"Control is pleased to present the first in a new workshops series covering the basics of synthesis, acoustics, and voltage control.

La Synthèse Humaine has been designed to give the musician, sound designer, hobbyist, and enthusiast a basic working understanding of modular synthesizers - how they work, how modules interact, and how to create new sounds with them. Upon leaving this course we hope to give you the basic intuition you need to create any sound you can imagine (and, most importantly, the ones you can’t) with only a couple of modules.

The workshop series is split into three sections and will take place on Tuesday nights over the course of three classes:

I - Waveforms and Oscillations (Feb. 12th)
II - Processing and Modulation (Feb. 26th)
III - ...All Under Voltage Control (March 12th)

In the third and final session of the workshop - … ALL UNDER VOLTAGE CONTROL - we will discuss the basic principles and sources of control voltage in the modular system. First we cover the basic concepts of voltage processing: offsets, attenuation, inversion, rectification, integration, quantization, and multiplication. Through the all-important slew generator we will look at envelope generators, envelope followers, comparators, and all manner of control voltage generation, then we will dive into control voltage sources - both kinesthetic (i.e. keyboards) and programmed (i.e. sequencers).

Adding this to your cart and processing your purchase reserves you one seat in Workshop #3 "Modulation And Processing."

We would like this class to be accessible to all regardless of income - as such we suggest a donation anywhere from $5 to $35 based on what you feel you would like to contribute.

This lecture will take place on Tuesday, February 26th from 7:00-9:00pm at Control, Brooklyn, NY. Control is located at 416 Lorimer St., #1R in Brooklyn, NY. Please see our about page for more details.

Leading the course will be Control's Chris Miller who holds a master's degree in signal processing from NYU and performs live somewhat often with an array of modular and non-modular synthesizers."

RUBÉN PATIÑO LIVE AT CONTROL TUESDAY, FEB 18 7PM

RSVP Here

"Pennies from Heaven, a collaboration between Control and Bánh Mì Verlag, is a series focused on contemporary experimental culture with an emphasis on the liminal and the underrepresented.

Rubén Patiño (Barcelona, 1979) is an artist working in the field of Electronic Music and Art. He is focused on the sculptural properties of synthetic sound while exploring the limits of concert, public event and installation. All his works tend to contain different strategies regarding space and formats of presentation while combining sound, lights, text, image or found materials, with elements of early electronic music, ideograms and 20th Century art movements.

Since 2013, he has been involved in N.M.O., a rolling computerized ceremonial aerobics unit that, together with percussionist Morten J.Olsen, operates in a hybrid territory between club music, performance and inventive forms of sound spatialisation. This is what they call ‘Military Danceable Space Music and/or Fluxus Techno.’

Rubén Patiño has also collaborated with Arnau Sala, aka Exoteric Continent, and with Roc Jiménez de Cisneros as Super-boredom, a series of multi-channel audio pieces that uses an extremely rigid temporal structure.

Asha Sheshadri LIVE AT CONTROL WEDNESDAY, NOV 14 7PM

LIVE AT CONTROL

WEDNESDAY, NOV 14
7PM
ASHA SHESHADRI
PFH #8

Pennies from Heaven, a collaboration between Control and Bánh Mì Verlag, is a new series focused on contemporary experimental culture with an emphasis on the liminal and the underrepresented.

Asha Sheshadri is a California-bred artist primarily concerned with memory construction and questions of translation. With a strong investment in archival material, she works at the intersection of speech synthesis, sound poetry and field recording. Her essayistic recordings and performances layer lost and silenced histories, original writing and text sourced from found documents and thinkers she admires, creating an environment of musical and non-musical backdrops in which "sources shine through like light beams where they could easily be buried in fog."

Sheshadri has released work (as well as under the project titles Isolde Touch and Open Corner) via several imprints including Entr'acte Recordings, Recital Program, with a forthcoming release on Anomia.

Please note that space is limited to 50, and seating is on a first come first serve basis. After 7pm, reserved tickets may be distributed to standbys. Performance will promptly start at 7:15; once the performance begins no entry will be permitted. Do not be late. Suggested donation is on a sliding scale from $7 - $15.
