2021/08 DAWless Summer Session - Dance [w/ Custom 808 Clone in KORG PS Style Case]
video upload by Stereoping
"Another short session with the TriggerMidiRocket running the #Novation #Summit and the #DB9 Deep Bass Nine. #MPC1000 midiclock is sent to the 808-clone and a eurorack midi-cv-clock interface. The clock of this interface is syncing the ER-88 eurorack triggersequencer which finally is triggering the Rocket. Gatelength and Velo changes on the Rocket control Glide & Accent of the DB9 ... surprising everything works so flawless. #OSCar and #ARP2600 are simply midi controlled by the MPC."

"bought new in 1995. Based around the sound of the Roland TB-303 it very much has it’s own sonic fingerprint and is a true analog MIDI controlled mono synth with CV and Gate in and out plus an audio in allowing you to filter external sounds through it’s excellent 24db voltage controlled resonant filter.
It has five functions:
1. A MIDI controlled bass synthesizer.
2. An analogue controlled bass synthesizer.
3. A MIDI to CV converter.
4. A MIDI controlled filter gate.
5. An analogue controlled filter gate."

"The DB9 has a built-in CV/Gate converter with inputs and outputs. So it can either be used with some older pre-MIDI equipment you may have or it can be used to bring certain pre-MIDI equipment into the world of MIDI. This unit was in storage for many years and is in great condition, little to no rack hash, originally billed as a 303 clone but for me it's true power was in it's deep bass tones, all the pots are reassuringly still stiff but freely tweakable (as it was when bought) i never saw it's strengths as a 303 clone so never really tweaked the hell out of it, preferring to use other similar synths for that.. a true analogue monster."

"Deep Bass Nine is a 1U rack mountable unit, with ten dials, no hidden menus or function keys like some over complicated designs. This was essentially an imitation of the TB-303, while not hugely similar it has since become an instrument in its on right. Has one oscillator with saw and square wave. Can also be used as an audio filter for external sounds.
The Deep Bass Nine (DB9) is a nineteen inch, single unit, MIDI-controlled monophonic analogue synthesizer. It is a voltage controlled synthesizer using one volt per octave, with an excellent 24dB voltage controlled resonant filter. The filter is an exceptional resonant filter design which is very aggressive and emulates the classic 'acid' dance music bass sound.

"Control Synthesis Deep Bass 9 Roland TB 303 clone plus a spare unit which only has the synth board, case and power transformers.
The working unit is fine, the second unit was bought with the midi not working, the CV input and output was ok but i managed to locate and talk to the original maker of the synth, sent him the board and that part of the synth got 'shelved' due to him not having the ability to reprogram the eprom responsible for the midi side of the board and got binned subsequently. So in essence the synth part and the transformers are spares for the working unit.
It is useful other as a 303 clone and also it converts the midi to CV and Gate outputs and can accept CV and Gate inputs to replicate the incoming signal, good for sound reinforcment to the original sound source. It also has an external audio input feed which uses the filter section of the synth, good for drum loops ETC...
If you add midi portamento controller information to the sequence it does tie the notes similar to how a real 303 works. Unlike all the digital clones there are out now this is analogue and sounds like it."

"One of the first clones to be out there. It didn't succeed at doing such a great TB303.. But it's great at beeing it self! It really has a quality tone to it, take a listen and judge for your self. It uses a cem3340 chip and you cant go wrong with that. This is a multitrack recording and it's just to show you how it can sound."

"The Deep Bass Nine was commissioned (circa 1994) by UK-based second-hand retailer FX Music Control as an alternative analog mono-bass-synth to satiate the demand for the Roland TB-303. Yes, this is another TB-303 clone. It's very simple and straightforward with basic controls that mirror those found on the TB-303. It's also a true analog MIDI-controlled bass synth with plenty of thumpin' bass potential of its own.
The DB9 is a single-unit rack module with all ten of its knobs on the front panel. There are no hidden menus. Just like the TB-303, the DB9's single oscillator offers two waveforms to choose from - a sawtooth or square wave. That is followed by the 303-cloned Tuning, filter Cut Off Frequency and Resonance, Env Mod, Decay and Accent knobs. Additionally you can set the DB9 to one of the 16 standard MIDI channels, and you can set it to use its external audio input instead of the oscillator allowing you to process external audio through its analog filter (inputs and outputs are mono).
Speaking of filters, the DB9 uses a 24 dB/oct filter which sounds great. It also has a limited frequency cut-off control and a strong resonance control. The resulting sound, although not quite as sharp in the mid range as a TB-303, seems much more deep and warm.
Of course, since the DB9 has no on-board TB-303-like sequencer, MIDI control is essential. The all-import Accent feature of the TB-303 is controlled here by MIDI note velocity - and turning up the Accent knob dials in how much it affects, not the volume of the note, but the filter's frequency and loudness. There is a hidden Glide control, although this is more like a portamento that seems to add some extra release on the envelope.
The Glide and the Cut Off Frequency are the only two parameters that can be controlled via MIDI CC. None of the knobs output MIDI CC data, which means all live control changes need to be performed and/or recorded live. The DB9 also has a built-in CV/Gate converter with inputs and outputs. So it can either be used with some older pre-MIDI equipment you may have or it can be used to bring certain pre-MIDI equipment into the world of MIDI.
The DB9's real strength is that it has its own natural and warm unique sound which has many sweet spots. The sawtooth and square waves are very thick and full sounding, and you can push the resonance right up till it howls. It sits in a mix very well too, so it makes for an ideal dedicated bass synthesizer module. And if you're after something to make some real analogue acid, look no further."

"Rare, British analogue monosynth with a fat sound and a lot of vintage vibes (it uses CEM3340 for the oscillator section - same as Memorymoog, Oberheim OB-x, Jupiter 6, Pro One, SH101 and many others). In great working condition for its age. Also works perfectly as Midi>CV converter (fully tested). The filter range and resonance can be tweaked using internal pots (I've adjusted it for the optimal settings)."

"The Deep Bass Nine was originally marketed as a Roland TB303 clone (it was the first of the breed) but in fact it deserves to be seen as a classic in its own right. As you'd expect it sounds decidedly Roland-like (think SH-101 as much as 303) and as the name implies it has a "big bottom". Unlike the Roland classics it's got good MIDI control of everything you need to make properly naughty basslines.
What you might not expect of the DB9 is just how good it sounds. Unlike most contemporary and modern analogue synths this is not just another "me-too" squelch box, it sounds proper..."
