Out of Order ( M8 & C64 & OMX-27 )

video upload by Avrilcadabra

"Some sounds from the past with help from the future.

This track, I wanted to make my own breakbeat from scratch and resample it, stretch it etc to make it sound old and brutal. I also sampled some pinball sounds, slowed down pinball flippers etc, lot of sample manipulation going on with the M8. The weird arps and stuff are mostly from the M8, couple from the c64. I sampled the c64 into the m8.

Hope you enjoy the artistic flair of the video for some old school aesthetic.

"The Commodore has been modded to be a portable synthesizer. No monitor needed to create music but Cynthcart does produce visuals if you hook one up. Black and white keys are marked on the Commodore. Paddles have been hardwired for filter control, rendering the joystick ports inactive. Audio out for 1/4" jack. Everything works perfectly. Comes with original box, genuine Commodore power adapter, Cynthcart and Commodore 64. Box has some damage. More info on Cynthcart: qotile.net/cynthcart.html"

C64 LIVE DEMO - SID bassline (commodore cynthcart mssiah prophet64)

YouTube via lukhashdotcom | September 06, 2009 |

"Live demo of one of my songs.
Bassline is played by an good old C64 equipped with Cynthcart.
Tune is called "we ain't finished yet" and has been featured on DEAD PIXELS long play.

In 2009 I began experimenting with SID chiptune (built-in sound generator chip of Commodore 64), and Cynthcart to create a blend of original 8bit sound from the 80's and Rock music.

"The catridge turns your C64 into a realtime controllable synth. With real time filter control, that can be added to the commodore's ports with two podmeters. A real easy beginners mod :) The chip on the cartridge is installed on a socket, so that it can be replaced with future updates to the firmware on the chip. This is also the reason why its not in a catridge housing, although thats fairly easy to arrange."

Rebuilding a Super Psycho LFO

See the full post on Sequence 15

"A couple of years ago I bought a partially completed Catgirl Synth Super Psycho LFO from someone. The circuit board itself was complete, but none of the panel connections had been made. The person who built it had bought a panel for it from Cynthia, and all of the panel components, still in the bags, came with it.

I set about completing the build, and ran into a problem..."

Jackson Pollock Inspired Modded Commodore C64 Synth for Mssiah Cynthcart

via this auction via the forum
"Up for sale is a Commodore 64 which has been heavily modified for use with Mssiah or Cynthcart. For those of you not familiar with the cartridge that turns your C64 into a midi integrated synthesizer can check out it out by clicking HERE. This is probably one of the most unique and impressive looking Commodores ever assembled. With a later revision motherboard and tightly gripping cartridge port, there were no expenses spared during it construction. This attention to detail has resulted in a long list of cosmetic and hardware modifications.

- A all over flat black paint job using high quality automotive trim paint designed to adhere to all kinds plastic and metals. The white paint is high quality PPG White Gloss automotive paint. And I have also taken the proper time to do the professional prep work to the commodore’s surface to ensure complete adhesion of the paint to the plastic.

- All the keys have been painted black and accented with non-glaring white on black keyboard stickers, with the only exceptions of the cursor and commodore keys which have been replaced with original white C64c keys.

- The whole keyboard has also been recessed about a 1/4” deeper into the commodore. This custom positioning feels so much more comfortable by eliminating the feel of a full stroke keyboard.

- A complete SID2SID installation with (1) 6581 R3 and (1) 6581 SID chip. The combination of the later revision 6581 SID chip with the classic 6581 creates a uniquely dynamic sound. I have also taken the extra effort to replace the filter caps for Sid #1 to eliminate the old failing caps common in C64’s.

- There are (2) 1/4" Audio outputs jacks and (2) Audio inputs jacks, one for each SID's in and out. In addition the proper components have been added to the input of SID #2 to ensure the utmost sound quality. And all of the audio jacks have been labeled.

- (2) Red "kill" switches for the audio inputs have been added for each SID. This feature reduces the ground noise when switched on.

- A Sync24 In or "Din sync" female connector has been added which enables this C64 to be slaved to the many popular drum machines and synths such as the TR-606, TR-808, TR-909, TB-303, and MC-202.

- The boring stock red LED has been replaced with a cool new white LED. Also a white LED has been installed inside the case creating an interior glowing effect in the dark.

- A white colored RCA composite video jack has been added for increased clarity and compatibility.

- The addition of (4) 500k Potentiometers with nice black and white knobs that provide full control over the X/Y’s on controller port 1 and 2. The overall natural feel and the smooth ranges of the pots is an enormous upgrade to the bulky paddle controllers. Their placement is based off of AlphaMod.

Commodore 64 Cynthcart: Syncing a filter sequencer to LSDJ

"The program Cynthcart is running on the Commodore 64. The filter is usually controlled by a paddle control in real time. However, it is easy also to sequence the filter frequency using some cheap IC's.

In this case, the speed of the sequencer is controlled by the master clock sync output from LSDJ running on the Gameboy.

The Commodore 64 DAW

"The Commodore 64, to my mind, truly introduced ‘real’ music to the world of home computing. Its impressive inbuilt SID synthesizer was capable of much more than the bleeps and pops common to other machines. As a musical tool, the Commodore 64 could boast an impressive array of add-ons, which included Commodore’s SFX Sound Expander synth’ cartridge and keyboard, MIDI interfaces and sound sampling devices. Even today, new products are available, such as the Cynthcart and the Prophet 64. But despite the generous selection of hard-and software, it has only been during the past few years that the unique sound of the Commodore has been utilized professionally."

Atari Synthcart

via this auction
"custom [white] atari 2600 synth ! The bit crushing low end , this creates is unlike anything you've heard . This model is upgraded from the ones I normally sell . It has been custom painted and the controllers have been upgraded from the video touch pads and keyboard controllers that are available . The biggest and most essential add-on , is the MIDI2600 external kit from highly_liquid adding midi capabilities to this little bitcrushing Monster, without any other modifications . I have also added a 1/4 inch out put for easy use with amps, pa's mixers, computers , and more !! Thus making it perfect for many live and studio applications.

First off , I want to start out by saying that I believe in this machine. Its power is unbelievable ! The bass tone that this unit produces is one of the best I've heard. Sometimes I can't believe it's actually a 4-bit machine producing these tones. The cartridge was designed by a brillant man by the name of Paul Slocum . He's also created a cynthcart for the Commodore 64 and he's working on another cartridge for the 2600 called the Loopcart, that's actually going to be a sequencer for this machine. It should be ready by the end of the year. So you have even more to look forward to with this unit . With the synthcart you can do the following (as written on Mr. Slocum's website)

Play using an assortment of familiar Atari sounds
- Use two different sound types at a time, one assigned to each controller
- Intelligent voice management constantly re-assigns the two oscillators for maximum perceived polyphony
- 8th, 16th, and 32nd note arpeggiator
- Can arpeggiate both oscillators simultaneously
- Beat Box with many pre-programmed beats and fills
- Play two beats simultaneously to create custom beats
- Two tremelo settings
- Four attack/release settings

and now the hardware.....

oAtari 2600 fitted with a quarter-inch jack for easy use with amplifiers, PA systems and mixers
o2 upgraded controllers to play notes and drum patterns
o power supply
oSynthcart (brand new)
oOwner's manual/documentation for synthcart
o MIDI2600 kit w/ joystick extensions
o wired with a 1/4 inch output jack for easy use with PAs',mixers, amps, etc."

Update via wgungfu in the comments: "Its not a 4-bit system making these sounds, its an 8-bit. The 2600 is an 8-bit system."
