"FORMERLY KNOWN AS M-Z3R0 I DECIDED TO CHANGE THE NAME TO X1L3.  PARTLY BECAUSE I WAS SICK OF MY NAME LOOKING LIKE A PARODY OF S-CAT, PARTLY BECAUSE I WANTED A NEW NAME TO REFLECT THE NEW DIRECTION I'VE TAKEN AND PARTLY BECAUSE I THINK X1L3 LOOKS BETTER :-)

LISTED HERE IS THE LAST OF THE TWO FINAL MACHINES I MADE UNDER THE NAME OF M-Z3R0 I BUILT TWO OF THESE JUST BEFORE I VANISHED FOR A WHILE. ONE OF THEM HAS MADE IT'S WAY TO CANADA AND HERE IS THE SECOND ONE.

MY PSS30'S ARE USED BY THE BANDS IN DEATH IT ENDS AND MECHANICAL CABARET. I'VE SOLD A LOT OF THESE ALONG WITH NUMEROUS CASIO SA'S MODIFIED TO THE SAME SPEC. I'VE RECIEVED A LOT OF GOOD FEEDBACK ABOUT THEM ESPECIALLY FROM IN DEATH IT ENDS WHO HAVE USED IT ALL OVER THEIR LATEST ALBUM.

MODIFICATIONS:

***DIGITAL DELAY***
RATE
FEEDBACK
NOISE FILTER
DELAY OFF/ON

***SYNTHACON RESONANT HIGH/LOW PASS FILTER***
RESONANCE
CUTOFF
GAIN
THIS IS A TRUE RESONANT FILTER BASED ON THE STEINER SYNTHACON AND NOT A SIMPLE CIRCUIT BOARD MOD
BEING DESCRIBED AS A FILTER.

***MULTI MODE MODULATION GENERATOR***
RATE
DEPTH/PHASE
MODE (SINE / SAW / SQUARE)
THE MODULATION GENERATOR IS ROUTED TO THE KEYBOARD PITCH AND FILTER CUTOFF

***ATARI PUNK CONSOLE***
OSC1
OSC2
OFF/ON
LAYERS UP NICELY WITH SOUND SOURCES INTO THE EXTERNAL INPUT AND THE KEYBOARD.

***3 CHANNEL MIXER***
KEYBOARD LEVEL
ATARI PUNK CONSOLE LEVEL
EXTERNAL INPUT LEVEL

THE SYNTH IS FITTED WITH AN EXTERNAL INPUT THAT YOU CAN FEED ANYTHING INTO MAKING IT AN OPEN ENDED
BEAST FOR SOUND MANIPULATION.

A TINY LITTLE SYNTH WITH A HUGE SOUND. QUITE SWEET IN IT'S LITTLE WAY AND CAPABLE OF BEING BOTH NICE AND NASTY TO WHATEVER DEGREE YOU WANT TO PUSH IT. IF YOU'RE AFTER SOMETHING A BIT DIFFERENT WITHOUT HAVING TO RUN AN ANALOGUE SYNTH THROUGH A CHAIN OF FX PEDALS THEN YOU'LL ENJOY THIS MACHINE. IT HOLDS IT'S OWN AS A BASIC RETRO ANALOGUE SYNTH WITH IT'S NICE ANALOGUE FILTER AND TAKES IT ALL TO A DIFFERENT LEVEL. FOR FILM SCORE WORK, WITCH HOUSE, POWER ELECTRONICS AND INDUSTRIAL NOISE THIS MACHINE IS A KILLER."

"Commission job for Circuit Ben.

Same spec as the Yamaha PSS130 i built recently. Didn't have a lot of time to film it as i wanted to get it off in the post on the day but here's a run through using all the oscillator sources and some lfo combinations."

X1L3 - circuit bent - synth mod - Roland TR 505

Published on May 22, 2013 manufacturedZ3R0·92 videos

"Cauldron born! Another dirge disco relic of the 80's risen from it's grave to do what it does best in the hell of the living. Juicy analogue filter mods on a retro 80's machine. Even if the glitch switches weren't fitted it would still sound good. The filter/delay combination i favour works nicely with drum machines and the tr505 is a fine example.

Upon completion the psu pcb had a few free terminals left so i decided to liven up under the front panel with a series of leds that shift through the RGB spectrum. So i guess as well as a nice drum machine it's also a moody lamp in a dark place for when you just want to lay back and and drift for a while."

X1L3 - Circuit bent - synth mod - Yamaha PSS130

Published on May 15, 2013 manufacturedZ3R0·91 videos

"Demonic and dark. Or just shoegaze and noise? As with most of my machines it's geared up to do a bit of everything in the noise realm. Glitching with the delay, atmospheres, being a basic retro analogue synth, an external input for feeding what ever you like into the fx chain (shown nicely with an awful cassette i picked up at a car boot sale played backwards from a four track at 20.00 onward) Showing a bit of what it can do in a few takes. Some melodic, some just delving into dischord. Just demo of how strange it can sound when the different oscillator sources are mixed and the lfo's are routed to various combinations of destinations. It reminds me a lot in eclectic sound and the way it behaves of a modular synth. Except obviously it's hard wired. The delay is noisy at slow rates but as with most pt2399 based digital delays it fattens up and sounds warm at higher speeds. The plus side being it works as a cool glitch generator as well as a warm echo. Skip to 20 minutes in for an improv death industrial/quake 1 flavoured set.

I'm taking on commissions again now so if you want one pm me and i'll get back to you."

M-Z3R0 - diy midi controlled drum machine progress II.. (with pss30 drone synth)

Published on Nov 1, 2012 by manufacturedZ3R0

"Midi retrofit on a yamaha dd8 running through one of my circuit bent yamaha pss30 digital/analogue drone synths.

Made a fair bit of progress on the midi circuit. Added a hex inverter to get the note on messages to trigger the drums as opposed to the note off of the first try (a side effect of the dd8's own circuitry which meant having to use 64ths and shift everything back by 1/64 to sync it perfectly to the bpm click). Ironed out misfire/machinegun trigger flaws with dc blocking caps and tidied the whole thing up a bit. I'm moving surprisingly fast on this new path and so far the learning curve and progress made have been relatively painless."

M-Z3R0 - First steps with midi input - Midi controller & cubase to arduino

Published on Oct 23, 2012 by manufacturedZ3R0

"I've been working on programming in the arduino environment and midi on and off for a month or two now and now have a basic understanding of how the midi protocol works and how to implement it. Although this project doesn't look like much it is the first step to adding midi input to my circuit bent projects. I've got a way to go yet with both programming and things like multiplexing in order to gain control of the full range of a keyboard but hope to soon have something hooked up and playing via midi."

musik aus dem koffer von martin kratochwil

Published on Oct 2, 2012 by pianoloft

"electronic music devices, packed in old suitcases, called 'musik aus dem koffer' (suitcase music). the components are considered as a sytem of single modules, put together for a whole setting, played like one instrument. in that case circuit bending devices from folktek (microgarden, omnichord), hellrunner synth, a modified synth by manufactured ZR30 and a feedback connection with korg od20 and alesis bitrman are working together.

the video is taken by my art-partner max lorenz at the wabi-sabi pavillion ( http://wabi-sabi-pavillion.blogspot.co.at/ ), music and dance-sequences by martin kratochwil.

M-Z3R0 - circuit bent - Yamaha PSS-30 V2

YouTube Published on Sep 14, 2012 by manufacturedZ3R0

"One to fall asleep to maybe?
Admittedly a bit lazy on this one with the whole video fading between drone and noise all the way through. As always it's just a demo to show a few of the kinds of sounds that you can get out of these things. Although i didn't do the usual pretty melody thing at the start there are other pss-30 vids up here you can check out if that's what you want to hear.

Two circuit bent yamaha pss30's. One running into the external input of the other. Anything can be fed into the input but since i have two of these here at the moment i thought i'd pair them up and see what happened."

M-Z3R0 - circuit bent - ULTRA SA-1 & NIHON HAMMOND DPM-48 drum machine

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
YouTube Published on Jun 14, 2012 by manufacturedZ3R0

M-Z3R0 on eBay (RSS)

"Latest version of the 'ultra' SA keyboards i've been working on over the last few months.

The video takes a while to get going as i wanted to show the lfo interacting with the filter properly before i added the drums and noise to the mix.

They now have an internal mixer, atari punk console and a sine/saw/square wave lfo modulation generator.

The demo here is a little rushed, very overloaded/drone orientated and maybe not as elaborate as the previous SA vids i've uploaded but it does show the new features to good effect including the ultra rare Nihon-Hammond DPM-48 drum machine being fed into the external input of the mixer. Thought i'd get it in a video as they're rarely ever seen anywhere.

As usual the film escallates into increasingly harsh noise towards the end but if this is your cup of tea then there's plenty of variety in there...."

M-Z3R0 - circuit bent - ULTRA SA-5

"Modified Casio SA-5

Superb fx, noise/drone generator and hands on two note polyphony subtractive synth.

Modifications:
K-filter v2 - analogue resonant low/high pass filter

Gain
Resonance
Cutoff
HP/LP selection

Death industrial crash delay

Off/on
Rate
Feedback
White noise generator

Damage control:

2 x classic casio modifications (gain/overdirive/drone & pseudo filter)

LTC1799 pitch control

NE555 square wave LFO routed to pitch and filter cutoff

Processor stall crash control

Drone hold switches on two octaves

Same modifications as the SA-8 posted previously. The SA-5, like the SA-8 has 25 preset sounds but each sound has four variations giving a total of 100 tones. It lacks the drum trigger buttons of the SA-8 but the tone variations make up for this. It also gives access to all of the demo tunes held within the SA's processor. Good for crashing the processor with for loads of different glitch effects."

M-Z3R0 - circuit bent - ULTRA SA-8

YouTube Uploaded by manufacturedZ3R0 on Jan 2, 2012
M-Z3R0 on eBay (RSS)

"A circuit bent casio SA8 with many modifications:

Starting off with melody and a little lfo applied to the pads to good effect. Then degenerating into distorted rhythms, a few minutes of respite with some nice lfo pads and high feedback delay, then into an all out wall noise delay crash with a little lo-fi cover of a NIN number to finish off :)

K-Filter: fully analogue resonant low pass/high pass filter:
Gain.
Resosnance.
Cutoff.
HP/LP.
Lfo depth.

Death industrial crash delay:
Rate
White noise filter
Feedback

Damage control
(stock SA distortion and pseudo filter mods found on most modified casios)

Pitch modification

Lfo routed to filter cutoff and pitch

Deep crash

Dc hum elimination circuitry:
Silences the hum associated with cheap power packs. A necessity when using high gain circuits such as the resonant filter.

Altered to serve as a multi purpose synth/noise generator.

The video drags a little here and there. It was a hard machine to play a full bass/rhythm/melody style set on as unlike something like the pss30 it has no mini sequencer to record notes to jam to with. Ideally we'd have three hands for this kind of thing :)"

"Yamaha PSS30 built for mechanical cabaret (www dot mechanicalcabaret dot com)

Mods include:

PT2399 ;death industrial' delay circuit with rate, feedback and white noise filter

LTC1799 pitch mod with 555 square wave lfo

Low pass/high pass selectable resonant filter with gain, resonance and cutoff. The gain can be overdriven for some good filtered distortions on basses and cutoff modulation on drum patterns.

Thre damage control parameters (drone/overdrive/bit crusher))

Silent power supply: Filters out the 50/60hz hum associated with cheap wall wart mains adapters making for an excellent signal to noise ratio and a very smooth filter response.

I used the pss's in built sequencer to record the bassline on the first section of the video. It's simple but effective and can hold a suprising number of notes. Witht he pitch swept low the processor runs at a fraction of it's original speed meaning it can run for ages. It leaves free the two noto poliphony of the keyboard while playing the recorded line and also allows you to select a seperate sound to that being played by the sequencer."

M-Z3R0 - K-FILTER - V2 - VCF

via these auctions

Videos at the auction and in this previous post.

"The M-Z3R0 - K-FILTER is a high quality analogue resonant low pass filter FX unit. This is a progression on my earlier K-filter. This filter now has a pre-amp section which has allowed me to add filter overdrive, gain reducer control and amp input level. Combined with the standard cutoff/resonance controls they turn this into an interesting fx unit for mashing up drum loops or adding a 'bit crusher' style effect to sounds. Add this to any piece of equipment and it immediately takes it to a whole new level in audio diversity."

M-Z3R0 Circuit bent Yamaha PSS-170 & PSS-80

via these auctions

"Fitted with a custom delay circuit which is tailored to creating, in addition to conventional delay effect, drifting abience, glitch and abstract sounds through to harsh industrial noise. The synth also contains a fully analogue custom resonant filter similar to those found in the MS20. This turns the keyboard into a versatile digital/analogue synth hybrid capable of creating sounds of a quality comparable to many old synths from the 70's & 80's. The combination of delay, VCF and LFO allow for a huge spectrum of sounds to be created."

M-Z3R0 - circuit bent yamaha pss-80

YouTube Uploaded by manufacturedZ3R0 on Sep 27, 2011

"Another Yamaha pss model added to the collection. The pss-80 has a lot in common with the 30. Nice raw digital waveforms and drum sounds that work well with the analogue filter. It has a very 'aphex twin' feel to it. The demo runs through melodic to drone/noise to abstract fx using the LFO. Currently one of my favourite modified keyboards.

Yamaha Pss50/Pss9 & Casio SA1 demos to come soon. On the lookout for as many Pss models as i can find at the moment. Many are said to be 'unbendable', with a little bit of patience and some diy pcb work there's not much out there that can't be turned into something new....."
