An analog DIY Bass-Synthesizer

Published on Apr 17, 2020 Andreas Remshagen

"I wanted a little Bass-Synth with an easy Chord-Sequencer and the Akzentuator (I had built it in a Synth before). It also should work as a normal Synth for playing Basslines. The filter i used is a moog-clone descriped in YuSynths site. For metallic Bass-sounds i added the Metalizer that is also descriped in YuSynths site. The VCOs that i used here i had built some time ago, they are the Oscillators from Ray Wilsons (MFOS) sound-lab Mini. There are circuits from the components in Videodescriptions from my earlier videos. Its a very compact device with you can create many Variations of Bass-Sounds.

"The Organ Machine" combo organ CV interface and how it works (ADCs and multiplexers!)

Published on Apr 5, 2020

"The interface circuits we designed and built for 'The Organ Machine' allow a vintage combo organ or other instrument with a divide-down architecture to be controlled with control voltage sequencers, with a separate CV input for each octave. Each octave of the organ is used as the core of a separate synthesizer voice after being fed through the envelopes and filters of a Music From Outer Space modular synth and Buchla clone low pass gates. In this video, Darian demos the instrument and Alison explains how it works, with an explanation of what ADCs (analog to digital converters) and multiplexers do.

This isn't the kind of thing we usually do, but we thought it might be fun to share this weird DIY project while everyone's at home because of the Coronavirus!

MFOS SoundLab Mini-synth MKII

Published on Feb 1, 2020 Todd Murray

"Here is an MFOS mini-synth MKII demonstration video. The audio is recorded directly to the mixer as raw audio, with no effects or processing. The video is intended to give anyone who is considering building one of these, a sample of the sound pallet. This synth is 100% analog across all audio and control portions of the design. This particular build repurposes an old knife box as a housing. The unit is powered by a 13.5VAC wall wart for the +/-12VDC power supply the synth runs on.

This synth design allows a lot of different modulation sources an destinations for an old school mono synth. I personal believe this is one of the better designs for synths in the small, analog mono-synth category, and provides tons of fun and a useable pallet for adding to any composition.

More details on the design is here: http://musicfromouterspace.com/index....

"This Music From Outer Space Soundlab Ultimate synthesizer was hand made by a tech friend of mine a few years ago. It has seen light use in my recording studio. It sounds as good as any old Moog or ARP I've used and is very fun and flexible.

These kits are no longer available so this is a rare opportunity. This Synth also includes the MFOS Ultimate Expander which adds a whole other world of flexibility and sound.

Comes with several patch cables. External power supply is hard wired to synth for reliability."

Music From Outer Space - MFOS - Soundlab Ultimate w/ Expanders and Voice of Saturn

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"This is a custom built modular synthesizer comprised of the MFOS Soundlab Ultimate and two identical Soundlab Expanders. The case itself was made from old bleachers from the school the builder worked at (who is one of the recommended builders on the MFOS website if you didn't feel up to the DIY challenge). The main synth voice is normalized but can be repatched. The patch points are an interesting combination of banana jacks and 1/4" jacks. There is a passive multiple box included that convert 1/4" and banana cables in either direction.
The bottom of the unit was also signed and dated by Ray Wilson when it was sent in to have the envelope generators response curve tweaked (I believe to make them snappier)

Soundlab Ultimate Features
3 VCOs with Square and Saw Waveforms
Noise Source
External Input
5 Channel Mixer
Analog Lowpass Filter
Analog VCA
Attack and Decay Envelope Generator
Sample & Hold Circuit
Gate Repeater
2 LFOs with Square, Rising Saw, Triangle, Falling Saw Waveforms, and Low and High Rate Ranges
4 Attenuators
Soundlab Expander Features (per each side)
Attack Decay Sustain Release Envelope Generator
Analog Multimode Filter w/ Lowpass, Highpass, and Bandpass
Analog VCA
Ring Modulator (Analog Multiplier)
Signal Booster
Envelope Follower
CV Inverter
4 Channel Mixer

Also included are a bunch of banana cables (some stackable, some not) 3pin cables to link the power from the main Soundlab to the 2 Expanders, and a separately built project Voice of Saturn drone synth. The Voice of Saturn does work but is a little finicky, and seems to need some calibration as the ranges on the controls are very narrow. But it will be an interesting add-on to this system giving you 2 extra VCOs and 1 LFO."

"In January 2019, the UK electronics magazine EPE published the first of 6 articles written by Paul Cooper of Soundtronics Ltd on how to build the MIDI Ultimate. The MIDI Ultimate is an analogue synth based on the MFOS Soundlab Ultimate. The soundtrack was produced entirely on the MIDI Ultimate using overdubbing and the Reaper DAW software. Whilst it is not that close to the original Stranger Things theme, a studio full of classic 80's synths was not going to be replaced by one 'home made' synth but it was fun to try!"

"At the time of publishing this video, 2 of the 6 installments of the build guide for the MIDI Ultimate synth have been publish in the EPE magazine. MIDI Ultimate Patch 1 - Pulsing Filter

Published on Mar 11, 2019

"We have named this patch the Pulsing Filter and this recording was done in one take using only the MIDI Ultimate and a MIDI keyboard for the key changes. The patch is based on three VCOs tuned to sub octave and sub sub octave. Their square wave outputs feed into the VCF, the VCA is bypassed and onto the echo effects section. The VCF has both LFO and ADSR modulation for the cut-off frequency. The LFO rate is very slow and gives the underlying cyclic sound. The ADSR is triggered from two sources, the sample and hold clock to give the main beat and also from the MIDI keyboard to give emphasis to note changes. During the course of the track, echo is added, then white noise and then lots of filter resonance."

This project will appeal to both those whose primary interest is in electronics and those whose interest is purely making music. This is quite a large build to take on with nearly 700 components (fig 1) and may initially be seen as rather daunting. However, the construction is covered in 6 issues of the EPE magazine with cover dates from February 2019 to July 2019. With care and with our detailed constructional articles, it is quite achievable. The two essential skills needed to undertake this construction are soldering and component identification. If these are new to you then numerous guides and videos can be found online. If you are a first timer or relatively inexperienced in electronics, practice your soldering before starting on this synth. Whilst the component count is high, the PCB is assembled systematically with each individual section tested before moving onto the next.

MFOS WP-20 Experimental Analog Synthesizer & 8 Step CV/Gate Sequencer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

See this post for a demo of one in a different case.

"WP-20 experimental analog synthesizer which also comes with a 8 step CV/Gate sequencer, along with N.American power supplies and two 1/8" cables for connecting the CV and Gate input/outputs together. Please check out the pictures of this unit as it has a very unique hand made look. The cases are aluminum with hand stamped labeling.

This is one wild unit, capable of much more than its humble specs indicate. It really shines in wild FM sounds, but can also play nice warm analog tones as well. But please be aware, if you are looking for a traditional synthesizer - keep looking! There is no MIDI and its VCO does not scale to V/Oct. Although it is certainly will play nice melodies using the 8 step sequencer you should not buy this thinking you are getting a Novation Bass Station, this is an 'experimental' synthesizer instead.

- VCO with square and triangle
- A VCF with resonance switchable
- VCA
- Loopable A/R generator with a manual trigger button (can get into audio range in loop mode)
- LFO with saw/triangle and square waves (which can also get into audio range).

There are 1/8" inputs for CV (pitch) and Gate (to trigger A/R).

The 8 Step sequencer has, you guessed it - 8 steps. But you can switch between 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 or 8 steps via the "steps" knob. 1/8" outputs for CV and Gate as well as a 1/8" input for external clocks (but note - some of the clocks from my modular would trigger the WP-20, and others would not).

If you would like to hear some of what this machine is capable of, I recorded a 10 minute track using the WP-20 as the sole sound source along with the 8 track sequencer (I also ran the WP-20 through some effects pedals, including a Cimmerian Caves and a home made spring reverb - plus some VST effects). Listen Here:

https://soundcloud.com/artificial-noise/wp-20-sessions

It is an odd unit, certainly not perfect - but if you use its for its strengths (and not focus on its limitations) you can create some very interesting sounds. Lo-fi, warbly and weird is how I would describe it."
