RetroSound Studio Tour: Vintage Hardware Sampler from the 80s

video upload by RetroSound

"RetroSound Studio Tour: Classic Hardware Sampler from the 1980s

In this episode of RetroSound Studio, I explore legendary vintage hardware samplers that shaped early digital music production. From professional 8-bit and 12-bit studio machines to iconic toy sampling keyboards, these instruments defined the sound of 1980s electronic music, hip-hop, experimental, and synth-based production.

The E-mu Emulator II became one of the most iconic 8-bit samplers ever produced, known for its warm analog filters and unmistakable character. The E-mu Emax brought professional sampling to more studios with its gritty 12-bit sound. The PPG Waveterm, paired with the PPG Wave system, represents one of the earliest digital sampling and wavetable workstations in synthesizer history.

On the experimental side, the Casio SK-1 and Yamaha VSS-200 introduced affordable lo-fi sampling to a generation of musicians, becoming cult classics for their crunchy digital tone and creative limitations.

These vintage samplers shaped genres such as synth-pop, early hip-hop, industrial, experimental electronic music, ambient, and film scoring. Today, they remain highly sought after by producers and collectors researching vintage hardware samplers, 80s sampling technology, Emulator II sound, Emax workflow, PPG Waveterm history, and lo-fi sampling keyboards.

If you are interested in classic digital sampling, early electronic music production, or rare retro studio gear, this RetroSound Studio episode offers an in-depth look at some of the most influential samplers ever built."

Minimal Bass: PPG 1002 Dark. Raw. Uncompromising.

video upload by Cornel Hecht

"There’s a darker side to analog.
In this trailer, the PPG 1002 dives deep into minimal bass territory — heavy, hypnotic, relentless.
A single voice. Massive presence.
Every pulse alive. Every filter movement breathing.

RetroSound Studio Tour: Vintage Digital Synthesizers

video upload by RetroSound

"RetroSound Studio Tour:
Legendary Vintage Digital & Hybrid Synthesizers of the 80s and early 90s

In this episode of RetroSound Studio, I explore classic digital synthesizers that revolutionized electronic music production during the 80s and early 90s. From FM synthesis and wavetable synthesis to vector synthesis, PD synthesis, vitual analog and Roland’s LA synthesis, these instruments introduced a new generation of sound design and defined the sonic identity of an era.

The Yamaha DX7 became one of the best-selling synthesizers of all time, defining FM electric pianos and metallic digital textures. The PPG Wave pioneered wavetable synthesis, laying the foundation for modern digital sound engines. The Sequential Prophet VS introduced vector synthesis, allowing dynamic blending between digital waveforms. The Roland D-50 shaped late-80s pop and film scoring with its LA synthesis architecture, while the Roland JD-800 brought hands-on control back to digital synthesis in the 1990s.

These digital synthesizers shaped genres such as synth-pop, new wave, ambient, house, techno, trance, and film music. Today, they remain highly sought after by producers, collectors, and sound designers researching vintage digital synthesizers, 80s keyboard sounds, virtual analog, classic FM synthesis, and wavetable history."

Modern Synth Sound Design on the 3rd Wave with Sam Gutman | NAMM 2026

video upload by Groove Synthesis and Sam Gutman

"What does deep sound design look like when it's shaped by years on stages with Ms. Lauryn Hill, The Fugees, and YG Marley? ‪@SamGutman‬ brought that perspective to our booth at NAMM 2026, and the result is a masterclass in what the 3rd Wave can really do.

In this session, Sam digs into the full range of the 3rd Wave's synthesis engine: PPG wavetables, modern wavetables, virtual-analog, linear FM, and sampling. Through the eyes and ears of a working musician, Sam shows how these tools come together in real musical contexts, from lush layered pads to sounds that complex arpeggiators.

Along the way, Sam showcases custom patches he built for the 3rd Wave 24K keyboard, demonstrates complex multi-part layering, and shares the creative thinking behind his sound design choices. Whether you're a seasoned synth programmer or just getting curious about what wavetable synthesis can do, there's something here for you.

The power of 100 sawtooth oscillators

video upload by WPalmWT

"This is a basic experiment I did a while ago.
What you hear is a cluster of sawtooth oscillators. no modifiers or envelopes etc. are involved.

The enormous computing power needed to do this is realised by involving the GPU and a 'compute shader' program.
The computer used: Mac mini M1, 2020.

(Please excuse the volume differences in the video)"

WPalmWT is PPG's Wolfgang Palm.

PPG 1002 Analog-Synthesizer - two minutes of pure analog power.

video upload by Cornel Hecht

"Two minutes of pure analog power.
This short session is all about weight, depth, and character — massive analog sounds shaped by voltage, movement, and a touch of delay to let the textures breathe and unfold.
No presets. No emulation.
Just a living instrument reacting to every small change.
The PPG 1002 is not about perfection — it’s about presence, energy, and that unmistakable feeling when sound becomes physical.
Close your eyes. Turn it up. If you want to learn more about the instrument, its story, and the philosophy behind it, visit:

PPG 1002 Analogsynthesizer Sounddemo

video upload by Cornel Hecht

"This video showcases three independent audio tracks created entirely with the PPG 1002 analog synthesizer.

Two sequenced lines form the harmonic and rhythmic foundation, demonstrating the depth and stability of the dual-oscillator architecture. In addition, a live improvisation generates evolving sonic textures, beginning with pure noise and gradually transitioning into expressive ring modulator sounds.

All sounds were generated by the PPG 1002, revealing the raw, dynamic, and unmistakably analog character of the instrument.

Headphones are recommended. www.ppgsynth.com"

Extended Analog Synthesizer

video upload by WPalmWT

"This project is based on an analog synth simulation. Everything I'm demonstrating here can (theoretically) also be done with a classic subtractive synth.
If you are interested in the basics of this project, please watch this video: The Moog Synthesizer revisited [posted here] I started this a while ago and now picked it up again. In this version of the synth I extended the possibilities and demonstrate some sounds."

"PPG - Waveterm B (s/n 0157). In good condition (very good apart from some rust on the black keyboard 'shelf'). It powers up and screen shows “PPG Wave-Term B”, but not tested further as no system disk. It might be unlikely for the disk drives still to be functional - but they can be serviced, we think, if needed. VEMIA can collect and pack: 30GBP."

PPG Wave 2.3 v8

Note: links to listings are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this Reverb listing

"An absolute legend. Super rare PPG Wave 2.3 with v8 software. This PPG has been completely serviced, bushings replaced, all caps replaced, old lcd replaced with a Noritake VFD (no more output whine), and the OS upgraded to v8. I have a copy of the PPG manual as well and it is available online.

The v8 software fixes the bugs of the original, allows for sysex dumps, and even allows dumping wave files to the PPG from the Wavesim plugin. Due to age and fragility, unit is local pickup only and as is. Being local pickup, you of course will be able to go through it and verify all is functioning."

"This ultra-rare early PPG monosynth's overall condition is very good, and it is great-sounding. But there is one problem: VCO 2 is quiet via the internal mixer, however the input to the Ring Mod is working perfectly. This makes me think it’s something relatively simple in the mixer rather than an issue with the oscillator…. fingers crossed! VEMIA will collect after the auction and service it fully at the seller's expense. All you need to know about it (and more) is here
It is of course labelled Palm Products Germany - hence PPG. VEMIA will collect for servicing, and then pack: 30GBP."

"PPG - PRK (Processor keyboard) (s/n 01037) In very good cosmetic condition. 72 wooden keys. Untested, powered it up but it does not light up - though not sure what it is supposed to do without the PPG Wave/Waveterm attached. So please assume not working. 110V/240V switchable on back. VEMIA can collect and pack: 36GBP."
