Synare S3X Analog Drum Synthesizer

via this auction

"It has two oscillators which can be detuned for that fat "analog" sound. It also has knob for 5 preset sounds and 1 spot for a set-up of your own. An adjustable filter, sweep, and many other features compliment this Synare... The unique thing about the S3X is that it was made to operate with the Synare sequencer, and has a 2-position switch inside ,and an extra input plug for this use. With that feature, I'm wondering if it could possibly be triggered, by a contolled voltage source from another synth as well. Also, all of the electronic trim pots on the inside, are adjustable and you can change the sound radically, or to your liking. They also had the common sense to mark the trim pots at their orignal settings. The sensitivity of the drum head is also adjustable. This Synare comes with all of the original paperwork, and the original power adapter. Also included is an original advertising sheet."

Synare 3 Vintage Analog Synth Drum

via this auction

"The trigger is actually a speaker (see pic) so the volume is relative to how hard you hit the drum pad, just like a real drum... One of the coolest features is that you can strike the drum then turn the knobs, morphing the sounds making them sound out of this world.

We would frequently run this through an echo and reverb to really trick it out, any stomp box will work.

The drummer can also set a particularly unique sound effect then work it into the beat and it will change the whole dynamic of the song.

Great for a psych rock band but you don't have to be radiohead to get the best out of this as the sounds range from psychedelic to something you'd hear in dance music."

Star Instruments Synare PS-1 Analog Drum Synthesizer

YouTube via moogplayer.

via this auction

"Rare Synare PS-1 4 pad, 12 zone percussion synthesizer built around 1977-78. I am a Synare fan and have owned several units. In my 15 years of collecting these I have not seen or found one in better shape than this unit. I bought it new old stock from a music store that closed about 3-4 years back. Filmed on an iPhone using the built-in mic, so sound quality is much better via DI or though an amp. I hate to sell it, but need the $$$ (and rarely use it, as it's really a museum piece)..."

Update via bobketchum90 in the comments: "I got one of the very 1st models of this synth. I produced the audio demo for Star Instruments and they gave me one of the 1st Synares (SN 0097). I used it on an album project in 1977. The company gave me instructions on how to add a pedal that would raise/lower pitch and shorten or lengthen the envelope."

"Here is a Synare 3 synth drum made by Star Instruments in the late 70s. All the controls and switches appear to work just as they should. The drum has two separate oscillators, a noise generator, and a filter section to create some of the coolest and usable retro sounds around. It really is a high quality analog device."

Vintage Red Synare S3X Analog Drum Synth

via this auction
"Looking more like a flying saucer than a percussion synthesizer, the Synare S3X, made between 1977-82, was the first affordable model for mostly anyone, and could run on batteries! It had 2 oscillators with no variable waveforms, a white noise generator, and a sweep function, ie. up, or down to get that descending "booooooooooooh" sound used ever so endlessly in disco records of the era. To get an idea of what these are capable of listen to the famous drum solo in Edgar Winter’s “Frankenstein”. Oscillator 1 was the noise generator with a "tune" function. The Amplifier section had volume, attack, and decay controls. Also had a low-pass filter with cutoff, resonance, and decay controls. This one was professionally rebuilt and powdercoated in bright red to match the rest of the Tama drum kit that it once was a part of."

Update via brian in the comments: "Edgar Winter's Frankenstein has nothing to do with this. Nor is it similar - that's an ARP2600 played by hand while moving sliders on the Filter. There ARE many good examples of these drums on record though."

Synare Sensor Drum Synth Kit - Circuit bd/w Components

via this auction
"This is a direct clone of the Synare Sensor board.... Well...actually the original was single sided, where as this design is double sided with plated through holes....a much nicer design. In this kit I include the circuit board and all components needed to construct the module. The only thing missing is your trigger ( drum pad, microphone, piezo disk, etc.) plastic knobs for the pots, and a suitable enclosure. You may even want to get serious and use several of these kits to build a custom system. Also, the boards are small enough to install inside the shell of a small drum, just like the old Synare "UFO's" . Quality components are used throughout the design and assembly instructions are included.

The Synare Controls:

Tune - controls the pitch of the Oscillator
Freq - controls the speed/rate of the LFO wave that controls the pitch
Mod.- controls the depth of the LFO wave that controls the pitch
Decay - controls the length of the sound
Sweep - controls the range in which the oscillator sweeps
Vol. - controls the output volume

Included:
Double sided Circuit Board
Resistors
Capacitors
ICs
Simicondoctors
Pots
Battery connector
Power Switch
Output Jack
Assembly Instructions

NOT included:
Inclosure
Plastic knobs
Trigger (board is compatible with all drum triggers, pads, etc.)"

SYNARE 3 vintage drum synthesizer

via this auction

".....way cool vintage electronic drum sythesizer by Star Instruments. This thing is a doozie man....it has oscillator 1 and oscillator 2 ....filter....and amplifier with decay. I believe this gem is responsible for the genius early 80s sounds of bands like Joy Division, Prince, Devo, Kim Karnes and probably many others."

Synare Drum Sensor

via this auction

"I’m assuming the unit was designed to clamp onto your drum rim (there’s a clamp right on there) and when you hit your drum, the unit senses the hit and sends its cool 1980’s synth sound out to an amplifier."

SYNARE 3 DRUM SYNTH Modded - This One Goes to 11

via this auction
Details (anyone confirm the comments on sound?):
"You are looking at the famous Synare 3. Used on "Bette Davis Eyes" and a whole lot of disco tracks. It is the best sounding one. Phatter than the 1 and 2. The 4 sounds like crap compared to this.

This is one of a kind because of a special mod. It has a speaker with a larger cone in it than the original one. I did not do this mod but it sounds awesome! If you know physics that means Synare 3's go low but this one goes really low! Crank the resonance up and it will shake your house and scare your friends. Although I admit I used this mostly for bells and chimes. It has a wonderful 70s sound to it. Its filter is nuts. The guy I bought it from also had his drum tech resurface it. It is in as-new condition. All dials and the jack work perfectly. Comes with Ludwig mount. Most Synares you see are rusty and scratched to hell. This is in marvelous condition."
