M3 (emthree) Mini Synthy (T.Danko)

via Vemia

"Another incredibly rare device. I know of two or three of these in the world, but presumably there are more like 100 - it looks quite professionally done, and not at all a bodged hand-made thing. By T. Danko - either the Ukrainian freestyle wrestler or perhaps more likely Tomas Danko, a musician / sound designer from Sweden. Basically a double octave splitter / waveshaper... with a hard/soft switch which might be better labelled very hard / hard. Not for the faint-hearted."

Computone Wind Driver Lyricon-type controller

via this VEMIA auction

"Rare and special wind controller, owned from new by Bruno Spoerri, one of the pioneers of wind-controlled synthesis. Here's Bruno's comments from today:- 'I tried the Wind driver and it worked perfectly, as far as I can analyze it. It's 220 Volt (if I remember well, it can easily be converted to 110), and it comes with the original handbook and the original service handbook.' Cosmetically it looks nice. Even if you aren't a wind player, it's a great way to get wind-instrument-like expression into analogue synths. There's a manual online for more info during the auction at:" [link - mirrored here]

Triadex Trio: Muse, Amplifier and Lightshow

via this VEMIA auction

"Extremly rare Triadex Muse, Triadex Amplifier and Triadex Light show. A complete collection of a trio set from '72 still with two original boxes (Muse and Amplifier), manuals, cards and...the old warranty papers ;-) ALL is perfect working and lighting... visual condition as new! The Triadex Muse is the first digital musical instrument and was produced in 1972. It was designed by Edward Fredkin and Marvin Minsky, the creator of the alien 'MONOLITH' in 2001 SPACE ODYSSEY, friend & collaborator of Stanley Kubrick. Marvin Minsky has made many contributions to AI, cognitive psychology, mathematics, computational linguistics, robotics, and optics. In recent years he has worked chiefly on imparting to machines the human capacity for commonsense reasoning. His conception of human intellectual structure and function is presented in The Society of Mind (1987), which is also the title of the course he teaches at MIT. The Triadex Muse it's an algorithmic music generator: it uses digital logic circuits to produce a sequence of notes based on the settings of various parameters. It has four small sliders that control Volume, Tempo, Pitch, and Fine Pitch. It is not known how many were made, but they are considered extremely rare. For years, the Muse was a featured exhibit at the Museum of Science, Boston. The signage explained the device's algorithmic (and deterministic) approach to the creation of its seemingly-random music. Far from being random, its preset 'song' played continuously -- and was even given a name, 'Museum Musings,' by the staff. USA standard voltage of 110 volts Here is a youtube demo about the current Triadex trio lot" below

RSF Kobol Modular: 41U rare Kobol rackmounts!

via this VEMIA auction

"This is a monstrous and extremely rare RSF Kobol modular system composed of 8x Kobol Expander 1s with cv gate, modulation, audio in and programmer expansions, 1x Expander II, 2x Programmer sequencers, 1x Keyboard mixer, patchbay and Polyclavier (8 voices and sequencer) that can drive the whole system. All modular system is perfectly working and fully tested. About the Polyclavier status, I have just plugged the keyboard and tried for a while...and all seems to be ok. The Kobol modules are fitted on three high quality professional travel cases, closable as a cube... very nice! I'm not sure if it was this one, but seems that a similar Kobol big modular was used on the Jean Michel Jarre China tour in the '80s ... The cosmetic condition is very good apart from the Polyclavier upper wood and front left corner which need some restoration. Working voltage is 220 /240 volts. (VEMIA note: please bear in mind that the owner isn't guaranteeing that all Polyklavier functions are 100%, because he is not familiar with it.)"

Maplin 5600s

via this VEMIA auction

Videos below.

"Maplin 5600s stereo synthesizer. It's a very rare vintage matrix synthesizer, rich in parameters ... much more than an EMS VCS3. This isn't a typical example, either. Unlike most, the construction and wiring quality is absolutely professional, so it comes in perfect working condition, serviced and tested recently. The original service manual is included.... very unique cover! The Matrix has 30 x 30 contact points (900 in total) for complex I/O and control voltages. It has a built in spring reverb and an amazing cv controlled phaser. Many features: 4x VCO's, 1x LFO, noise and Sample & hold, 3x audio Mixers, 2x CV controlled mixers, 2x Transient envelopes (that you can use as sequencer with hold delays & portamento, amazing!) 1x Trapezoid envelope, 2x 24db filters, 2x VCA, 2x Ring modulators, Spring Reverberation, amazing Phaser, 2x Audio in modules, Pan controls, Joystick and more. The keyboard is 5 octaves and there are 2x cv controls and gate (2x trig inputs, switchable from the audio in modules) retrigger, echo send / return, foot pedal & switch connections. Working voltage: 220 / 240 volts There are 3 fresh youtube demos about this Maplin 5600s: filters on phasing patch and other 2 of transient techno sequences, you can check the videos from this channel" below

Waldorf Wave

via this VEMIA auction
full size image here
"One of the rarest and most sought-after synths, the Waldorf Wave . This example (serial number 101) is a two-owner machine, not very much used at all. It is 32-voice, **now with OS 1.803! - the owner says 'so, there is the choice between 1.68 or 1.803. of course, you can always go back to 1.7, too. but i guess one would want to stick with 1.803 as it fixes several bugs and allows to read and analyse wav files and has the possibility to synchronize the LFOs to midi'.)**, the original manual, and a recently-bought flightcase - very useful (almost essential) with a precious instrument of this size and weight. The pneumatic struts (a universal fault with Waves after this number of years) are being newly replaced before the auction finishes. The display is well readable - see photo - though it isn't as bright as when it was new. The instrument is in/near Paris. VEMIA could collect, and deliver to northern France / Belgium economically, or bring it back to England, and then deliver or ship. (Or of course because of the flightcase it could be shipped direct from Paris to further afield!) The battery was changed very recently; and everything works as it should and sounds great. There were only 150 of these ever made, so as well as being a joy to play (great user interface, silky rich sounds) it is also highly collectable!"

Realton Variophon

via this VEMIA auction
click the image for the full size shot
"I'm a dedicated Variophonist and have therefor collected quite a few over the last years. Since I have other priorities in life than repairing gear I've decided to clear out my stash of non-working units. Before you look at the picture I want to point out that all of the now auctioned units come with a full set of voice cards of your choice out of my supply of tested and working voice cards (circa 20 units) but does not include windcontroller. This unit is a Variophon Gig, and I've done some testing and came to the conclusion that everything seems to work except that it only plays sound cards inserted in slot 6 (out of 6). Otherwise it's as great as can be expected. A fair guess is a faulty IC but I cannot verify this without further testing. The case and panel are in great cosmetical condition with only minor scratch marks around edges and on the top of the unit. And, _if the final price exceeds 1000 GBP_ I'll include: A Variophon keyboard controller with mouth piece to go with it. The keyboard is in great shape and is fully working. The mouth piece looks great but has a history of somewhat erratic behaviour (i e sometimes it works flawlessly, sometimes it stops working in the middle of a song and after a short power off/on it's back online again). It is common with Variophons that the wind-to-voltage functions needs both adjustment and some tender love and care. But, as you know if you read this (or have checked out Peter's praise in 'A-Z'), the Variophon is a great instrument when working. Trust me - I have two work horses in the studio. :)"

Moog Custom Engineering modules

via this VEMIA auction
"A very nice little Moog modular set-up, with modules made recently, but 'proper Moog' - made by Moog CE aka Modusonics, the company Mike Bucki, the Moog Custom Engineering person in the old days, set up after Moog's original demise - so you can be sure they are the genuine article. The system includes (with US prices from a year or two ago): Moog 904a classic low-pass VCF ($835) Moog 921 improved stability full-featured VCO ($1285) Moog 902 VCA ($485) Moog 911 Envelope Generator ($425) Moog C3PO discrete Mixer ($435) Moog 995 Attenuators ($220) Without allowing for any price rise, that is $3685. With shipping and import duty/tax to England, that is $4765, which is £2883 at today's rate. They are in a case, fully working with power supply. The case is a home made job so a little heath robinson! It has a QS1 dot com power supply enough to power around 40 modules. The power supply is about a year old and rock solid reliable. The case will fit any 5u Moog-size modules in top row and 3u eurorack size below. There is a custom Moog Custom Engineering harness that runs directly off the dot com power supply, with edge connectors for up to 9 Moog modules. Dot com or any other plus and minus 15V modules will run directly off of the power supply so the Moog can mix with dot com, Oakley, MOTM etc.. (VEMIA note: We certainly expect this to be bid on in the main auction at this price - with the additional dotcom power supply, and Moog CE harness with nine connectors, it's worth well over £3000 even ignoring the useful case, and you by-pass the scarily long Modusonics waiting list. But if not, all modules will be re-entered in second chance sunday as individual lots.)"

EMS VOCODER 4000

via this VEMIA auction

"EMS VOCODER 4000 ! I CALLED IT 4000 BECAUSE IT HAD MORE FEATURES THEN THE 3000 AND LESS FEATURES THEN THE 5000. Each of the 16 Filters has Level, Offset, CV out, CV-in. Very good condition. Fully working. The Vocoder 2000 was built by EMS. The 2HE Filter Section was built by a Pro Shop in Leibzig(Germany) in 2007. Very good Condition. Fully working."

EMS Synthi 100

via this VEMIA auction
"This wonderful Synthi 100, serial number 3007, was owned originally by Bruno Spoerri. He used it for many years. At some stage he decided he wanted some more variety within this massive system, and changed some of the modules' circuitry to more modern analogue designs. Because of the modular nature of the beast (all the important boards are contained within card-frames for simple removal and work) it would be easy to return these to their original design - all parts are still readily available. But our feeling is that it would be good to start with Bruno's mods intact, and only change back if they proved not to the new owner's taste. After Bruno Spoerri, it was owned by Felix Visser of Synton, who bought it as one of the centrepieces of a massive museum planned for the Netherlands. The museum never happened, and so he sold it 18 months ago. The new owner unfortunately has hit a crisis which involved having to move out of his current studio and home, and so the Synthi is up for sale again. It is in very good cosmetic condition. There is some marking where damage to one of the massive pin matrices has been repaired - see the photo - and a small amount of corrosion on the right of the serial number panel. Apart from that, and the odd scuffs and marks consistent with its 35 years' life, it is really lovely. The 'producer desk' in between the two matrices has been repaired and re-tolexed and looks great. All knobs are beautiful; all keys on the twin-manual keyboard are excellent. It needs some servicing: Output channel 1: full on, slider not effective. Some other mixer sliders feel a bit rough, but sound smooth enough; Output channel 5: not working; panel lights: not working; meter 4 light: not working; sequencer: not tested fully but the counter and reset work fine. Oscillator 5: not working; oscillator 12 (LFO): not working; frequency counter: probably not working properly - counts OK, but doesn't seem to respond to frequencies. Filter bank: not tested. Ring mod: not tested. EQ1: not working; EQ2: working in every respect except not triggering from keyboard or button; EQ3: triggering, working as envelope, but internal VCA not working. Input amp XLR socket missing its locking thing. VCF6: not working; VCF7 and 8: not working (inverted, strange behaviour). Top keyboard: 1 note iffy; bottom keyboard: pitch drifting. There are some aspects of the mods that need exploring more fully, so would also count as not tested. That still leaves perhaps 90% of this amazing machine working well. We have asked EMS experts Lucidsounds to estimate the cost of a full service, and their estimate is £2000. Please look at the photo carefully. It's difficult for space reasons to take a proper picture of the whole machine; please note that the back picture was taken when some of the heaviest modules had been removed for safe transport - hence the dangling connector, etc.. This comes with the stand for the keyboards, the back panels, a generous number of matrix pins (including some for the sequencer) - well into three figures, we think - and the original manuals, massive tomes like old bibles. This is the eighth out of less than 30 of these incredible machines, and one of very few (just 3 or 4?) to go to a private studio, so much less likely to be abused during its life by a succession of careless students or employees."
