Jamuary #12 - Dark Times (ft Soundplane & Eigenharp)

TheTechnobear

"Today's Jam features a passion of mine...two rare expressive instruments.
The Eigenharp Alpha by Eigen Labs (main shot) and the Madrona Labs Soundplane (inset as shown in other jams)

What I love about these instruments is you can use quite simple sounds and add the feeling with your touches, no need for automation when you can be the modulation :)

Why two expressive controllers?
simply because with expressive controllers everything is in 'how they feel'... they make you play differently - the Eigenharp is fast, precise... the Soundplane is more mellow, evolving.

The sound source in both cases is Aalto by Madrona Labs probably my favourite synth, which was built for expressive controllers like the Eigenharp and Soundplane, so is a 'natural fit'.
This paired up with my favourite reverbs from Vahalla DSP.

#Jamuary #Eigenharp #Soundplane

(1) It should be noted both the Eigenharp and Soundplane are controllers , in this case they are sending OSC, but can also send midi (mpe)"

AE Challenge #4 - Journey thru space

Published on Feb 1, 2019 TheTechnobear

Eigenharp Alpha and Madrona Labs Soundplane for the controllers.

"This weeks challenge was to create an ambient piece with the help of the AE Modular.

This was new to me, and honestly, the piece got more complex than I imagined...

I started with the FX / drone made on the AE modular, this was a mix of FM, noise, and feedback, and fed into the Multi FX - it was made so with changing various module parameters had pretty wild changes.

Next, I created a new AE patch, for what would become the arp, trying to create a kind of berlin school vibe.. this was relatively simple, using the NYLE filter, and then playing with Delay and MultiFX to get some flavour to it....
I layered this with a bit more of a pluck sound from the Virus TI.

Finally, I recorded some short-wave radio on a Koma Field Kit, and put this thru a spring reverb...

all the above I recorded on a Tascam 244 4-track, which I then recorded out in single tracks to Ableton.

I arranged this in Ableton in sections I wanted, then could improvise over this, with l two tracks both using Madrona Labs Aalto.

the first was played with the Madrona Labs Soundplane, as its great for fluid, expressive pads.

the other, was played on the Eigenharp Alpha which I prefer for more responsive, lead type sounds.

It's funny, whilst both are expressive controllers, they play so differently, even using an identical patch, the result will be completely different.

Things I learnt, to plan it better!.. with more layers, it got confusing to improvise over the top of, and become problematic to mix :) "

Expressive Organelle

Published on Sep 13, 2017 Mark Harris

"This is a technical preview of my MEC application allowing an Eigenharp to be used directly with an Organelle, to allow a more expressive interface.

The aim was simple, add more expressive possibilities but to keep the portability of the setup, something that can be taken out and about and enjoyed. No computer required :)

notes:
- Im running off a USB battery with a 9v converter, which would last 12-20 hours depending on usage.
- MEC will work with any Eigenharp controller - Alpha, Tau or Pico, and runs on Mac, Linux (x86 and ARM)
- Pico and Axoloti are both bus powered off the Organelle.
- Axoloti is running an MPE enabled patch, sound is sent to Organelle via a small patch cable.
- The Pico would typically be held in the hands, and also features breath control... but was a bit difficult to film, so sat it on a table.
- Sound is recorded directly on the camera, all effects are from either the Organelle or Axoloti."

Axoloti Noodles

Published on Aug 13, 2015 Mark Harris

"Noodling around with the Axoloti, a Madrona Labs Soundplane and an Eigenharp Alpha.

Im loving the Axoloti board , 60 Euro for so much power and flexibility.. programmed like a nord modular on the computer, and then upload the patch so it can run standalone (i.e. without computer). tiny board - you can just see it top right in soundplane part

Here I just grabbed it with some patches Ive made, and had some quick fun with my Soundplane and Eigenharp Alpha.

The Axoloti supports MPE (Midi Polyphonic Expression), so I can have individual notes with different timbres and pitch-bend, volumes

Details:
Madrona Labs Soundplane : using MPE , each note individual voice, which includes a LFO (the bouncing) that has a changeable rate per note. (the Y axis on the Soundplane, also used for filter)

Eigenharp Alpha : using MPE, again per note expression, but a more conventional synth voice, Y axis is used for filter/resonance. the strip controller on the Alpha is used to control distortion fx (on the Axoloti)

Axoloti: 2 patches, one for my Soundplane, other for alpha, loaded on the SDCard, and can be switched via midi (on my Alphas percussion keys).

Other: Valhalla Vintage Verb used for Ableton for post production reverb. ( I hope to use another Axoloti board for reverbs in the future)"

EigenD : Modular Synth Tutorials

Published on Dec 16, 2014 Mark Harris

Playlist:

1. EigenD : Modular Synth (part 1)

"The first of a series of videos where I show how to use EigenD as a modular synth.
In this part, I cover all the basics from a blank setup, attaching a controller, a single oscillator and a ladder filter, all with individual note modulation.

if you follow the video, add a vst reverb to the result (see my VST video for how), and you will be surprised how good it sounds... I'll add that native reverb in the next part!

In future parts we will be adding more oscillator, modulation, fx.. a true modular synth, all for free :o)"

2. EigenD : Modular Synth (part 2)

"Published on Dec 18, 2014
In part 2, we move on from a very basic synth to something with a bit more 'body', initially by adding the EigenD convolution reverb agent,
then adding a second oscillator, which we then control the detune 'per note'.
Finally, we attach the ladder filter to a global strip controller.
Doing the above, we learn about the important 'ranger' agent, and also get an introduction into connection channels.

At this stage we can already start to hear, how even simple patches being controlled with individual key control can become expressive, as the player can create the movement, so often 'automatically' done in synthesisers with LFOs and envelope, here we bring the musician back into that equation.

The impulse responses mentioned in this video are Diego Stocco's Rhythmic Convolutions - available here: http://www.diegostocco.com/ffs-rhythm...

(Check out his FFS series, I really enjoyed watching them)"

3. EigenD : Modular Synth (part 3)

"In Part 3 I introduce a sub oscillator,
how to create an LFO and use it for pulse width modulation, and the use of AHDSR envelopes.

This should give the users all the tools need to get started.
Now the basics are out the way, the series will move on to tips and tricks, and also exploring some more complex setups which use these (and other) components in interesting ways.

they will released every 3-4 weeks, as and when Ive something interesting to show
If you have ideas/suggestions of what you would like to see let me know.

Soundplane using EigenD

Published on Dec 15, 2014 Mark Harris

"In this video, I take a rapid tour through some of the many features that exist within EigenD, that are useful in a live performance context, showing how they can all be controlled directly from our instruments.

This setup is the exactly the same as used on the Eigenharp Alpha, but is controlled from my Madrona Labs Soundplane with minimal changes.
(In a future video I will show how we can use EigenD to exploit a continuous surface, and the soundplane in particular)

Included:
- Controlling from the instrument
- Drummer (loop playback)
- Arranger (step sequencer ++++)
- Recorder ( per note expression recording)

theres so much more in EigenD... but they will have to wait for another day.

Tech details:
Eigen 2.1
t3d device agent listens to T3D osc
Soundplane application, broadcasting t3d osc

the t3d agent is setup to be similar to the eigenharp, so that it can be close to 100% compatible.
usually I would alter the setup to make use of the unique features, of the soundplane (see next video) , so this is for demonstration only,

Disclaimer:
The lights/menu may look 'complicated', but once you are familiar they become very logical, and you don't even have to look any more.
Im fumbling here a bit, as I wanted to show this Alpha setup, but its not my day to day setup, so Im a bit unfamiliar with it :o)"

EigenD - Integrating Controllers

Published on Jun 30, 2014 Mark Harris·19 videos

"Not only is EigenD now free, but is also open source.
In this video I reveal a new EigenD agent I have written that allows a much deeper integration of controllers into the EigenD world.
This new agent converts midi into the much higher resolution and higher rate signals used by EigenD, it also supports 3 dimensions on every key press, strip controllers, breath and pedals.
Finally, its support midi voice per channel and 14 bit midi for higher resolution and more expressive control.
(useful for newer controllers like Madrona Soundplane, Haken Continuum, Linnstrument and iPad apps)

I demo a simple midi keyboard setup and move onto an unusual Leap Motion setup, then a iPad ThumbJam setup and finally Eigenharp Pico connecting via a second instance of EigenD on a different machine. (ThumbJam/Pico demo voice per channel)

Included in the video is some information on how this is all setup.

Note: Ive not yet released the 'midi device' agent, as I'm still improving it, but it will be made available soon along with all my other agents - it will be free and also open source."
