First Leap experiment controlling AU/VST effects

Published on Feb 4, 2013 Geert Bevin·179 videos

"This afternoon I took a few hours to write an EigenD (http://www.eigenlabs.com) agent for the Leap (http://leapmotion.com). Currently it only supports sending out the x, y and z axis of two palms relative to the Leap device itself. The API is very intuitive and it shouldn't take long to gradually add support for hand directions and fingers, I wanted to first play around with it for a while though.

In this experiment I control two effects in Native Instruments' Guitar Rig 5. It's processing one of my songs that's playing from iTunes and you can hear the recorded result. I did have to manually align the audio to the video, so that might not be perfect.

This developer version of the Leap device supports a little bit less range and a restricted field of view, which is why it's sometimes missing some detection at natural boundaries. The production versions will not suffer from this.

The song is 'Never Lose' from my album 'Dream Like a Tree': http://gbevin.com/album/dream-like-a-tree/"

ThingM blink(1) lights sequenced with Eigenharp Alpha

Published on Jan 31, 2013 Geert Bevin·178 videos

"This video quickly demonstrates some new capabilities of the ThingM blink(1) USB RGB light agent that I wrote for EigenD. You can now send commands that turn individual light channels on for a certain period of time. This can then be used to sequence them live using the Eigenharp's arranger functionality.

The blink(1) agent for EigenD 2 can be downloaded from http://wiki.eigenzone.org/wiki/Blink"

This Is Not The End (original instrumental with Animoog 2 and Eigenharp)

Published on Dec 20, 2012 by Geert Bevin

"A first composition with Animoog 2 and my Eigenharp Alpha. I'm using a single sound patch in Animoog that totally changes based on how I touch the keys on the Eigenharp. The sound ranges from something akin to a polyphonic theremin to percussive glass sparkles as well as everything in between. This patch was based on one of Animoog's Acoustic Expansion Pack patches.

Animoog 2 has improved its MIDI handling tremendously and together with an iConnectMIDI interface, I'm able to send the Eigenharp expression data to Animoog at full rate without any decimation. Creating and playing music with Animoog is now a very emotional experience. Currently this only reacts to polyphonic aftertouch, but I'm hopeful that Moog might ultimately add full support for Voice-Per-Channel MIDI, maybe even at 14-bit resolution.

Animoog sounds amazing to me and is amongst the top software synths I've played."

The Eigenharp reminded me of a Christmas tree so I'm giving this one the holidays label.

Audiobus demo with Eigenharp Alpha

Published on Dec 9, 2012 by Geert Bevin

"I received an early copy of Audiobus (http://audiob.us) yesterday to try it out while playing live MIDI through it. I was pleasantly surprised that it barely adds any latency and reacts really well. The shortcut bar is extremely useful and app-specific icons makes it very easy to interact with backgrounded applications while having another app in the foreground.

In this short demo I'm using my Eigenharp Alpha with a pre-release of PPG WaveGenerator. It's fed into JamUp for additional effects and amp simulation. Loopy HD sits at the output side to build up the loops. I'm also using FunkBox, MIDI-synced to Loopy, for the drums.

The Eigenharp is connected with iConnectMIDI through a USB hub, into the camera connection kit to send the MIDI with virtually no latency and at a very high bandwidth. I use a Matrix USB/SPDIF interface that's also plugged into the USB hub and recorded the iPad audio digitally without any post-processing.

This is all extremely promising imho!"

Sometimes Is Not Enough (original instrumental on Eigenharp Alpha)

Published on Oct 19, 2012 by Geert Bevin

"This is an original composition, played live on the Eigenharp Alpha and looped for some parts.

It uses a single sound on my Moog Slim Phatty for all the sections of the song. This one of the challenges that I've been setting for myself. I want to create only a few very expressive and versatile sounds that I perfectly learn to play on the Eigenharp in all their nuances, as opposed an arsenal of thousands of sounds that are totally unconnected from myself.

Here I'm driving the Slim Phatty over Control Voltage, giving me an incredibly detailed connection to the expression of the sound. This is possible thanks to the Expert Sleepers ES-3 module which converts the data from the Eigenharp over digital ADAT audio to Direct Current.

Pressure on the keys is tied to volume, left-right movement to filter cutoff and up-down movement to pitch. I'm additionally controlling distortion through the breath pipe of the Alpha and delay feedback through its strip controller, both are AudioUnit effects from Rob Papen. The looping is done through Mobius and is controlled through a Rig Kontrol USB MIDI footpedal."

PPG Wavegenerator, first test of upcoming voice-per-channel MIDI mode

Published on Oct 15, 2012 by Geert Bevin

"I've been helping Wolfgang Palm with adding a new feature to PPG Wavegenerator that allows per-note expression over MIDI by implementing a voice-per-channel MIDI mode. This is a quick test of the first fully working version he sent me today. It's short, but I hope it shows the possibilities of this feature with new electronic instruments like the Eigenharp.

Note that this demo is only using one single sound that has independent expression in three axis for each individual note.

I'm using a modified version of the standard 'Jigsaw Lead' patch that has up-down movement mapped to per-note filter cutoff (Y movement in PPG), pressure (X movement in PPG) to note volume and left-right movement to per-note pitch with a 5 semitone interval.

More information about this excellent iPad synth here:
http://wolfgangpalm.com/

This new feature is probably going to be available as an additional in-app purchase."

Twitter on Eigenharp Alpha light patterns and light remote control

YouTube Published on Mar 20, 2012 by Geert Bevin
Don't miss 1:30 on for the tweets.

"For the past few days, I've been working on a new Illuminator agent for EigenD that gives you full control over the Eigenharp lights. There are two main ways of using the lights: fixed patterns and dynamic control. Fixed patterns can be stored in your setup and can be displayed at will. The dynamic control can either be done through messages inside the EigenD system or by sending external messages over HTTP to EigenD. These messages can either control individual lights or set bitmaps that will display directly on the keyboard. In this demo I show how tweets are scrolling over the Eigenharp Alpha's neck even while I'm playing on it."

Eigenharp Control Voltage setup with Workbench, EigenD 2 and Silent Way

YouTube Published on Jul 24, 2012 by Geert Bevin

"http://eigenzone.org : this tutorial creates an Eigenharp Pico configuration from scratch in Workbench so that you can play your analog synthesizer over Control Voltage. This requires EigenD 2 and a DC-coupled audio interface or a similar solution like the Expert Sleepers ES-3.

I'm using the Expert Sleepers Silent Way plugin to generate calibrated pitch voltages, but all the principles should apply to MOTU Volta also.

The Pro version of EigenD 2 is required to use Workbench, but it's possible to achieve CV control by modify an existing factory setup using Belcanto and the non Pro version of EigenD."
