Modcan A-Series (1998) II

Published on Dec 24, 2014 Sanguis Rusticus

"Modcan A-Series synth, built in 1998."

via this auction

"PLEASE NOTE: I bought this in 1998, and the A-series was the only series they had at the time. Also, it is not exactly the same as the current A-series; it is an older version. The main difference that I know of (and mostly inconvenient if you want to add current modules) is that on the original 1998 Modcan, the modules have three-prong pins and plug into a three-prong female power supply plugs. Now, apparently, it is a four-prong system. Thus, on the two Cynthia modules I have--and she advised me to do this--I had to cut the three-prong female power supply cable and rewire it to a four-prong female power supply cable (which she provided). No soldering, just electrical tape (as you can see in the picture). It seems to work fine. Anyhow, if you want to replace some modules (see below under "Known Issues") or add modules for the three remaining spaces, you'll have to take into account this issue. I'm sure Modcan would supply the female plugs/cables like Cynthia did.

"Canada holds a significant place in the history of electronic instrument development: from the ground-breaking inventions of Hugh Le Caine in the 1940s to the innovations at the University of Toronto's Electronic Music Lab in the 1960s. Recently, Canada has again come to play a significant role with the modern day resurgence of modular synthesizers; it is home to two highly respected manufacturers: Modcan, founded by Toronto's Bruce Duncan, was the first company to reintroduce modular synthesizers to the post-MIDI marketplace, and Intellijel, founded by Vancouver's Danjel Van Tijn, is one of the fastest growing and most respected lines of Eurorack synthesizer modules.

Modcan Super Delay & Digital Delay Comparison

YouTube via scootermccrae | Feb 27, 2011 |

"People have been wondering about the difference in sound between the Modcan 30B Super Delay (which is a true analog delay) and the Modcan 59B Digital Delay, so I set up a simple audio demonstration. It's not meant to be an analog vs. digital contest -- as you'll hear, both of them sound beautiful but have very different tonal characteristics as well as unique reactions to control voltage manipulation.

The Modcan Sequencer is triggering a Modcan 58B VCDO that is passing through a Modcan 68B Matrix Filter (using the 4-Pole Bandpass output). In the first half of the video, that signal is passing through the analog Super Delay -- which is a mono device. I twiddle the knobs throughout and then eventually let triangle waveforms from the Modcan 61B Quad LFO take over the invisible finger chores.

The second half of the video is the same sequence and signal chain passing through the Digital Delay, which has been engaged to output the audio in stereo mode. Again, after some manual twiddling I put the 61B Quad LFO to work once more and send a slow-moving triangle waveform into the control voltage inputs.

As may be apparent from the studio configuration, I do love the Modcan modules for their sound, aesthetic beauty and a user interface that squeezes myriad functions per module into a reasonably-sized space. I hope you find this a useful and entertaining video."

Solvent improv #2 - Electro Acid w/Modcan, 808, x0xb0x,...

YouTube via s0LVentCIty. part 1 here

"Hi - my name is Jason Amm and I release melodic electro(nica) music under the artist name Solvent, for labels including Ghostly International, Morr Music, and Suction Records.

You can check my music via: solventcity.com
myspace.com/solventcity

Here is video #2. This time, the video is much worse, but the audio was recorded from the mixer, so it's much higher quality. I also think this track is much better... I'm pretty happy with this track myself, and will likely edit it down and release it at some point. Mind, this is only the first 10 minutes of a 45+ minute long improv!

An explanation of the video: I was so immersed in this little jam session, that it didn't even occur to me - before pressing REC on the video camera - that I was still in my pajamas. So what I've blacked out is basically me pulling up my pajamas every 30 seconds. It may look like I've blacked out some of what I'm doing on the gear, but everything on that side of the screen was blocked by me anyways, so not really. That cheesy electricity effect is also there to distract during a section where I enter the frame.

So, sorry about the video... this one's mainly about the music.

OK so here is a melodic electro acid improv. The Doepfer Regelwerk is the master clock, and is sequencing 2 synth parts on the Modcan.

The Regelwerk does have CV/Gates built in (8 of each!), but in this case I used a Midi out into a 4-channel Midi-to-CV module (an MOTM-650, the only non-Modcan module in there). I am muting/un-muting these Modcan parts on the fly via the Regelwerk, which you can't see... But if you look closely at that black Modcan module, you can see the lights blinking to indicate when sequences are start/stopping.

The bass sound is 2 or 3 VCOs, with the Multi-Mode VCF (a killer filter IMO!). I'm doing a lot of tweaking on a dual-mixer module: 1 side is for the VCO levels, the other side is for different outputs from the Multi-Mode VCF - combining LP with BP, Notch, etc gives a lot of diversity to the sound.

The other synth part is 1 VCO + 1 MinWave, into the EMS-style Diode filter.

All of the delay you hear is from the Modcan SuperDelay module, which is probably my favorite module in the whole system... Wow.

The Regelwerk also has DIN-sync out, so that's how the 808 is being synced. x0xb0x sequencer is receiving Regel's MIDI-clock. My x0xb0x is heavily modded, and what you'll notice me doing a lot is switching on/off a mod which keeps the VCA open.

Modcan's sequencer is clocked via an 808 trigger. The main thing that it's doing is sequencing that occasional white noise pattern that comes in occasionally, which was Noise into the Frequency Shifter module, and then some VCF, don't rem which one.

BTW, the Modcan isn't mine, unfortunately! I had it on loan from a guy named Jeff, who makes really nice music under the name Minisystem (myspace.com/minisystem)."

One Half Of One Million

Published on Dec 28, 2015 John L Rice

Congrats to John L Rice!

"Another bit of messing around, this time with a lot of Modcan modules.

The 'sequence' was created with all 4 outputs of a Modcan 66B Control into to two Modcan 55B quantizers whose output fed 4 Synth Tech MOTM-300 VCOs. The VCO saw outputs were passed through 2 Happy Nerding FUN VCFs for a little fixed filtering and then on to a Modcan 31B quad VCA which was controlled by a Modcan 60B quad EG and the mixed output of the VCA was run through a Modcan 73B dual delay before getting to the final line mixer, a Samson SM10. The EG and quantizers were gated by a Moon Modular 568+568A trigger sequencer setup and the 568 and 73B were clocked from a Modcan 53B clock.

The Mellotron M4000D was noodled by hand but while some of its output went right to the SM10 mixer, it was also routed out to a Modcan 40B dual multimode VCF, that was being modulated by a Synth Tech MOTM-380 LFO, and the 40B's output was sent through a Club Of The Knobs (COTK) C1660 VC Phase Processor before returning to two inputs on the SM10 mixer.

Strymon BigSky and Roland RSP-550 reverbs were used on the SM10 mixer's effects loops and a little bit of reverb plug-in was used in Sony Music Studio during editing.

Thank you again everyone! :-) I hope to do a lot more in 2016 including increasing performance and production quality and maybe even finally getting one or more albums released . . . FINALLY! ;-) Have a happy and productive New Year, all!"

Details:
"highly coveted Signal Arts brand MIDI Sequencer once offered in Modcan A-Series modular synthesizer format. While the desktop box versions of these fabulous polyphonic sequencers are still being offered by the Signal Arts Company for $1,300.00, the Modular Modcan format unit above is no longer available which is why this unit is so very special!

Below is quoted directly from the Modcan website
(it is still listed on their site, however no longer available!) Modcan.com

"Overall, for the money, nothing even comes close to touching this [MAPS]. It's an amazingly powerful device. Given the legendary status that machines like the Latronic Notron have gained over the years (and price tag), I believe that this is a similar device at a much lower price "new", than what people are asking for old Notrons. Plus this has 3 cv/gate outs and can operate as a totally independent midi/cv converter. Sounds too good to be true really." Simon Birds, Australia. MAPS owner/user review on harmony-central.com

~~Modcan version of the Performance Sequencer available from Signal Arts~~

The versatility of the Signal Arts Performance Sequencer for sequencing, complex modulation and as a processor based event generator is unparalleled for the modular world.

Bridges the gap between Software and traditional Analogue sequencers.
Real-time control over all sequence parameters with tons of interactive performance features unavailable to analogue sequencers.
Built in Voltage and Gate outs and real knobs..unlike any software sequencer.
Backlit LCD display shows info for note value, duration, step length etc.
Sequences can modulate each other for true madness.

Playable and controllable in Real Time for live performance as well as in the studio!
Three Analogue outs with three gates.
Stores 99 sequences of 8 steps, chained to make longer sequences.
Nine different trigger modes.
Can be clocked with an LFO module for sync to Modcan
Sequences are accessed in real-time using panel switches
Also functions as a full feature MIDI to CV converted and as a MIDI
control device for use with other midi gear.
Can be used with other MIDI>CV converters for up to 32 channels of Voltage control
Module is three units wide

Modcan A-Series Modular

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

Video in the listing just posted below.

"Modcan A-Series consisting of original Modcan and Cynthia modules. These are incredibly rare and extremely well-built systems that almost never come on the market. I am putting the whole system up for sale including the cabinet and power supply and don't want to split it up at this stage. The modules all compliment each other and comprise a fully functional synthesizer system. The modules are as follows:

Cynthia Dual ADSR/LFO
Modcan Dual VC-ADSR
Cynthia Sub-Octave Multiplexer
Cynthia Anything Module
Modcan Frequency Shifter
Cynthia Zeroscillator-1
Cynthia Zeroscillator-2
Modcan ARP LPF/Dual Attenuator
Cynthia Burst Generator
Cynthia Quad Low Pass Gates
Modcan VCO/LFO
Blank Panel
Cynthia Power Supply

The system was recently serviced by a vintage synth expert and everything is working as it should. This modular sounds amazing and is extremely flexible - it can go places you won't believe! It covers many types of synthesis from West-Coast Buchla-esque madness to Moog and ARP style fatness or even pristine FM synthesis using the fabulous Zeroscillators. There is the extremely rare Frequency Shifter module (one of the best ever designed), voltage controllable envelopes, plenty of modulation sources (LFOs), 5 filters, and some exotic modules like the Burst Generator and Sub-Mux for good measure! There is a spare space so that if and when you find some more A-Series modules you have room to expand (the power supply can be relocated to the back of the cabinet freeing up 2 more spaces if necessary)"

New Make Noise Dual Prismatic Oscillator (DPO) Video & Audio Demos

Make Noise DPO Dual Prismatic Oscillator. Sequenced by Modcan Touch Sequencer. from joseph raglani on Vimeo.

I wanted to make a short clip of a patch I made for tour using the Modcan touch sequencer to control the Make Noise DPO before I send the module back to Make Noise for final tweaking. I'm using a single gate signal from the Modcan TS to trigger both channels of the the Make Noise Maths module. The Maths is controlling the Optomixes. Modemix is also being used in a similar fashion. The other outputs from the DPO are patched in a dual ringmod configuration output into a second Optomix. Adjusting the Maths to shape the envelopes and mix control signals. Channel 1 and 2 of the Modcan TS are going into 1vt/oct of Osc 1 and 2 of the DPO. Channel 3 of the TS into the Fold input and channel 4 of the TS into the shape input.
