Plinky's Arp Sequencer Explained

video upload by Nathan Plante Synths

"In this video I go through all of the arp related parameters on Plinky and also show you three different patching ideas for arps. The arp system isn't nearly as deep as some of the other major systems on Plinky, but there is still a lot of creative potential to be unlocked here. This is the last major system on Plinky that I haven't yet covered, so it's high time that this video got made. Thanks to all the viewers who requested this in the recent poll!

Phase Vowels - A Wavetable for Plinky

video upload by Nathan Plante Synths

"This is the Phase Vowels wavetable for Plinky. I give you a quick tour of the wavetable plus a few sound design ideas.

@MakingSoundMachines writes: This set was generated with the Phaseshaping Oscillator of Fors Chiral. Chiral is a great Max for Live plugin developed by Ess Mattisson and Felisha Ledesma, and it has a feature that lets you export single cycle waveshapes. This set sweeps through the overtones in a manner that results in very vowel-y, vocal sounds.

You can find all of the wavetables on the Plinky homepage here:

Plinky12 as Norns Grid Controller

video upload by Nathan Plante Synths

"If you have an original Monome Norns, a Norns Shield or one of those fancy XL Shields, the Plinky12 just became that much more practical. There are currently three available panels, Chords, Toadstep and Blocks, each of which have their own unique functionality and musical focus. There are more panels in the works and it even seems like there will be the possibility of custom panels that users can design themselves. As if this isn’t enough, any of the Plinky12 panels can be used as a GRID controller for Norns!

So sit back and relax and enjoy these lovely scripts using Plinky12 as the controller!

Plinky 12 Toadstep – Full Overview and Demo

video upload by Nathan Plante Synths

"I had way too much fun exploring the synth – its so easy to make interesting patterns and just as easy to tweak them and mangle them. The sampler is quite impressive and lets you turn just about any sound into a synth voice. ToadstoolTech and mmalex have packed so many tweakable features into this new instrument, it was hard to fit it all in to one video. Happy plinking!"

Favorite Norns Scripts for Plinky

video upload by Nathan Plante Synths

"I have lots of fun combining these two pieces of gear so I thought I would share some of that fun with you all. Norns is a fantastic little music computer and there is so much more you can do with it than I show here. This video is less tutorial and more just jamming with Plinky and different Norns scripts. Enjoy!

Plinky 12 Blocks - Full Walkthrough

video upload by Nathan Plante Synths, Alex Evans (mmalex), Making Sound Machines

"At long last, I have made the Plinky 12 Blocks walkthrough! This panel is so jam-packed with features it was hard to fit it all in to one video (and I did leave out a few things). Blocks can do it all - sequencing, live play, loop recording, chords.... an EVERYTHING machine! I can't wait to see what great music people are going to make with this synth. Enjoy!"

Pitch Navigation on Plinky

video upload by Nathan Plante Synths

"With Plinky's unusual play surface and interface it can be a bit of a challenge (at first) to find the exact notes you want to play. In this video I walk you through my process of finding specific notes and give you a few tips on finding your way around the play surface. I hope you find this useful!"

FM Complex - A Wavetable for Plinky

video upload by Nathan Plante Synths

"This is the FM Complex wavetable for Plinky. I give you a quick tour of the wavetable plus a few sound design ideas.

@MakingSoundMachines writes: This set was generated with an FM generator. The one used here was two-operator, but with individual waveforms for both and a number of interesting offset and drive options. In this set, the waves were designed to have stronger individual characteristics, like pulses, edges and intervals within the wave. The resulting sounds are interesting to use in achord context, as they bring their own harmonic material to the table. Some of the waveforms tend to sound glassy, others overtone-rich like C64 variants of square waveforms.

You can find all of the wavetables on the Plinky homepage here:

Additive Drawbar - A Wavetable for Plinky

video upload by Nathan Plante Synths

"This is the Additive Drawbar wavetable for Plinky. I give you a quick tour of the wavetable plus a few sound design ideas.

@MakingSoundMachines writes: This set was generated with an additive generator. Think of it working like a drawbar organ, in that it lets you set an individual volume for each overtone / harmonic. In this set, the waves resemble organ tones, each with an individual mix of overtones. In higher registers, this bank has an organ sound to it.

The Original Miunau Wavetable for Plinky

video upload by Nathan Plante Synths

"This is the original (default) wavetable that comes pre-loaded with Plinky and Plinky+ which was created by the incredibly talented Minau!
https://miunau.com/

I intentionally recorded this one last to compare it to all the custom wavetables that came after it. Suprise - its still my favorite!

Introducing Plinky 12 Blocks, Chords and Toadstep

video upload by Making Sound Machines

Additional videos below.

"We are super excited to introduce 3 new instruments today! Plinky 12 is a family of expressive polyphonic touch synthesizers. The three instruments are built around a shared synth engine. Designed by mmalex, it evokes the unmistakable melancholic sounds of the original Plinky. https://plinky12.com

Each instrument is designed in collaboration with a different synth maker, lending each panel a distinct playability and unique character.

Plinky 12 Chords is a harmonic inspiration machine. It lets you improvise melodies and chords, with expressive control over voicings, progressions, and immediate musical play. Created by Making Sound Machines, Chords is the panel for finding beautiful harmonic movement quickly.

Plinky 12 Toadstep is a 4-track step sequencer built for super funky riffs, experimental self-generative melodies, and good ol' Acid. Created by Toadstool Tech, the designer behind the Ectocore Eurorack module, Toadstep is fun, immediate and easy to jam with!

Plinky 12 Blocks is an open panel built for experimentation, with monome-grid compatibility, Plinky style touch synthesis, and a browser-based coding environment just a click away. While it comes with a fully playable design out of the gate, creator mmalex invites you to build your own adventure with this panel. If you can imagine it, you can make it!

In this video, Enrica and Roland from Making Sound Machines explore the three new Plinky 12 instruments: Blocks, Chords and Toadstep from left to right.

The track builds on a repeating loop created with the built-in sequencer on Plinky 12 Toadstep. The short sequence uses rhythmic step repeats, track step length and animated synth parameters to create an ostinato that keeps sonically evolving over the length of the track.

As the piece continues, Roland plays a progression of harmonies from the rainbow chord palette on Plinky 12 Chords, before launching a sequence that reharmonizes the loop heard from Toadstep. Enrica joins in playing sparkling arpeggios with her fingertips on Plinky 12 Blocks, the surface with the sunset colour-fade print.

As the track progresses, Roland plays a melodic line on Chords, then Enrica takes over with a melody on blocks. The Plinky 12 polyphonic play surface reads both play position and pressure of the touch. It enables bends and glides on the horizontal axis, while allowing for discrete arps in the vertical direction.

They end the piece with a tempo transition showcasing the septuplet feature on the internal sequencer."
