Introducing the Novation BassStation 2 All Analog Synth

Novation // 21 Years of Innovation

Published on Apr 8, 2013 NovationTV·156 videos

"Bass Station II is an analogue mono-synth based on the classic original Bass Station but re-worked for the 21st century. It has two filters, two oscillators plus a third sub-oscillator, patch save and a fully analogue effects section. Add a step sequencer, arpeggiator, full sized keys and a powerful modulation section and you have the makings of a synth that is built for bass, but capable of so much more.

Bass Station II marks Novation's 21st birthday - find out more about Novation's early synths and how the technology evolved over 20 years"

What is it?

Bass Station II is an analogue mono-synth with a talent for bass, but a sound-engine that is versatile enough to kick out sharp leads and crisp arpeggios. It brings the best elements of the original Bass Station into a brand new design with re-worked modulation, effects, filters and more; like the Bass Station, but a much much bigger sound.
The signal path is pure analogue - including the effects section. The hardware has been laid out in modules with dedicated pots, switches, sliders and buttons for all major parameters. Critically, you can store and recall patches on Bass Station II. It comes with 64 killer factory presets, space for 64 of your own sounds on the hardware, and you can store more on your computer.

The key-mech consists of 25 full sized keys that are velocity sensitive with assignable aftertouch. It has been developed as a ‘synth-action’ keyboard, where each key is individually sprung so it is light to the touch and highly responsive to the synth engine. Bass Station II is a fully class compliant MIDI device with MIDI I/O on 5 pin din ports – for connecting to other MIDI outboard – and with your computer over USB. You can even connect an external instrument and run it through Bass Station II's analogue filter and effects."

"The Synth Engine: A Brief Overview

Oscillators: Bass Station II is built on three analogue oscillators and a noise generator. There are two fully independent oscillators plus a sub oscillator (which is the critical component in creating rich, analogue bass sounds). Oscillators One and Two are switchable between sine, sawtooth, square and variable pulse width, and Oscillator Three - the sub osc - can be set to one or two octaves below Oscillator One. It can be square, sine or narrow pulse width, delivering the characteristically ‘fat’ bass tone.

Filters: You can select between two discrete filters - ‘Acid’ or ‘Classic’ - each with a built in overdrive for pushing filter tones from dry, to warm, to nasty! The ‘Classic’ Bass Station filter can be switched between low pass, high pass and band pass at 12 or 24dB slopes. The ‘Acid’ filter is based on a diode ladder filter design that delivers a characteristically 303-esque sound that is designed to squelch!

Effects

Bass Station II has two effects (not including the filter overdrive). Analogue distortion drives circuit components to add new frequencies to the sound. Bass Station II’s Distortion function can add gentle warmth, filthy granularity and anything in between. The second effect is ‘Osc Filter Mod’ which creates a distinctive FM-type sound by using Oscillator Two to modulate the filter frequency. This is very good at crunchy, sound-mulching effects that substantially fatten up bass and lead patches.

Modulation

There are two envelope generators and two low frequency oscillators (LFOs). The first envelope is an ADSR amp envelope and the second is a mod envelope that can be used to modulate filter frequency, oscillator pitch and osc pulse width. LFO One is dedicated to pitch modulation whereas LFO is used to modulate osc pulse width and filter frequency. Although it looks like there are four LFO waveforms, the ‘LFO Slew’ function can be used freely to sculpt LFOs into smoother wave-shapes creating many more LFO possibilities.

Arpeggiator and step sequencer

Bass Station II’s Arpeggiator and Step Sequencer are killer performance and production tools. The Arp can be directed to run through 32 different rhythmic patterns in different directions with a switchable octave range. You can also engage the Step Sequencer. Up to four sequences can be played in – with legato and rests – and played back using any one of the 32 rhythmic patterns. As well as getting ideas down quickly and programming performance sequences, this is a brilliant way to preview patches while you are editing them.

This just scratches the surface of the synth engine. Bass Station II is a powerful little synth with a lot more than first meets the eye. There are many more oscillator, envelope, LFO and modulation functions that are too numerous to detail here. The best way to experience Bass Station II is to get hands-on!

"Major firmware update + synth giveaway

To celebrate 25 years of Bass Station and thank users for their support, Novation is releasing the Bass Station II v2.5 firmware update and giving away a Bass Station II 25th Anniversary Edition – one of only five units off the production line!

To be in with a chance of winning the limited edition monosynth, join the Synth Owners Facebook group and like the competition post from 1-7 November 2018.

Bass Station II v2.5

The v2.5 firmware update adds some of the most requested features including filter tracking, paraphonic mode, microtuning and new preset Soundpacks. Installation couldn't be easier from the Novation Components content manager.

Paraphonic mode

Bass Station II is now a paraphonic monosynth, because you can control the pitches of each of the two oscillators separately in its single-voice architecture. Play two notes at a time rather than just one and get interesting interactions through the Ring and Filter Mod.

Filter tracking

Filter tracking was one of the most requested features. The filter includes variable keyboard tracking in Bass Station II v2.5 – the best for matching higher notes to increased brightness.

Envelope retriggering

Bass Station II's secret sound-design weapon is envelope retriggering. It’s now possible to configure your envelopes to retrigger once the decay stage has ended, opening up a whole range of new possibilities.

Oscillator error

Oscillator error introduces a small and adjustable random detune on each note-on event. This can be used to generate some very beautiful, subtle (or not) musical dissonance, very much in the same way that vintage synths do (because of the looser tolerance of their electronic components). Paraphonic mode makes it as dramatic as possible.

Microtuning editing

Completely control the frequency triggered by each key press, giving your scales another dimension.

New presets

Two new Soundpacks are in Components: Silver and Sinevibes. Silver's presets explore the v2.5 features and inspire new tracks and sound design. Sinevibes, designed by Sinevibes’ founder Artemij Pavlov, gives 101 classic Bass Station II presets.

Warm greetings to you all

Bass Station II can now support a custom message display at start-up.

"http://www.nevadamusic.co.uk/piano-ke... Chris from Focusrite Novation creates a track using the Novation Bass Station II and the Launchpad S grid controller. Being a monophonic synth, Chris uses midi to record note information then plays it back to the Bass Station so he can tweak the sound. Then it gets recorded as audio in a clip on the Ableton software so the Bass Station can be free'd up to produce another sound. This is a great way of recording as its both hands on and very creative. The Bass Station allows for experimentation which is hard to do within software as well as teaching your ear how the different controls effect the sound, LFO's, oscillators and filters etc, a great lesson for all the plug in musicians. If your into computer music, you owe to yourself to experience a real analog synth and now with midi and USB connectivity it easily works with software without old school CV issues. Destined to become a modern classic, there's no better place to find your own sounds and blend the best of the old with the new. Affordable, real and fun.

Update: and the press release:

"New Bass Station II x Aphex Twin firmware update

The latest firmware update for Bass Station II adds five powerful and innovative new features to Novation’s hugely popular monosynth, all of them developed in response to user feedback and requests, one of those users being particularly noteworthy…

AFX Mode

Electronic music legend Richard James, aka Aphex Twin, has already played an instrumental part in the Bass Station II story, having provided guidance for the implementation of the micro-tuning added with Firmware v2.5. His conceptual contribution to v4.14 is even more profound.

Letting his imagination run riot, James envisioned the decidedly radical notion of having a discrete set of synthesis parameters assigned to each note of Bass Station II, either variations on a ‘seed’ patch, or disparate sounds designed to constitute a chimeric whole. Although this sort of thing could already be kludged using very fast program change messages, having multiple sounds active at the same time would clearly be a far more creative and efficient system.

AFX Mode is the realisation of James’ out-there concept. Put simply, it lets you modify your Bass Station II patch on a key-by-key basis. Use it to introduce subtle changes to a sound as you play up and down the keyboard; divide the keyboard into multiple zones (one per key if you like!), each playing its own sound; or create entire drum kits in a single preset for triggering manually or via the Arpeggiator. It’s a truly inspiring feature that really does open up a whole new world of sound design and performance possibilities.

Fixed duration envelopes

Aiding in the programming of drum sounds and plucks especially, the sustain segments of Bass Station II’s envelopes can now be set to a fixed length, moving on to the release stage regardless of when the key or trigger is actually released after playing a note. When fixed duration envelopes are enabled, the decay stage is taken out of play, and the Decay slider instead sets the duration of the Sustain stage.

Extended sub-oscillator control

With Firmware v4.14, Bass Station II’s sub-oscillator, slaved to the pitch of Oscillator 1, can be detuned using the Coarse and Fine controls. Now you can set the sub to any non-octave tracking interval you like, and knock it out of tune – subtly or dramatically – for creative effect.

Oscillator glide diverge

Prior to Firmware v4.14, both of Bass Station II’s oscillators could only be set to the same Glide time, but now you can slow down the Glide time of Oscillator 2 relative to Oscillator 1 by a variable amount, causing the two to diverge for interesting portamento effects. Just the thing for adding thickness and character to basslines, pads and leads, and certainly not a function you’ll find on many other hardware or software synths.

Envelope retrigger count

The Firmware v2.5 update added envelope retriggering, and now, to help with drum synthesis, the number of times the envelopes retrigger can be adjusted.

Introducing AFX Mode, fixed duration envelopes, extended sub-oscillator control, oscillator glide diverge and envelope retrigger count, Firmware v4.14 is a free update for all Bass Station II users, available via the Components content manager for Mac and PC."

Novation Celebrates 30 Years with Giveaways and More

video upload by NovationTV

"It’s been 30 years of Novation and music made with bass, beats and synthesisers.

From early beginnings in 1992, Novation has been a pioneer in developing music technology, allowing artists to create decade-defining sounds. Starting as Novation Electronic Music Systems, we built a small but innovative device, the MM10, which let you control a MIDI sequencer, the Yamaha QY10, for the very first time from a keyboard.

Since then, our synths, MIDI controllers, grooveboxes and more have helped people create, play and perform at all stages of their music-making journey.

From all of us at team Novation – we want to wish a huge thank you to our whole community for keeping us inspired. We can't wait to hear what you make next, and we look forward to another 30 years.

"Novation looks back on three decades of bass, beats and synthesizers.

Since 1992, Novation’s synths, MIDI controllers, grooveboxes and more have helped people create, play and perform at all stages of their music-making journey.

In 1992, Novation developed the MM10, an innovative MIDI sequencer that controlled the Yamaha QY10 from a keyboard, revolutionising the way we make music as the first MIDI controller of its kind. Bass Station’s arrival in 1993 pushed them further into the spotlight as a standout synth of the ‘90s. Developed by none other than synth designer Chris Huggett, his expertise with analogue and digital synth design influenced many of their iconic synths including Supernova, Bass Station II, Summit and Peak.

Over the years, Novation’s instruments have brought new life to music-making, including the Launchpad range which changed the game for grid-based music production and DIY performance, Circuit’s much-loved intuitive approach to beatmaking and sampling, and the award-winning Launchkey range of MIDI controllers used by artists in many genres.

In 2022, they’re celebrating 30 years of music, pioneering music technology and people that made Novation what it is today.

Bass Station II overview: http://bit.ly/BS-II

Bass Station II is an analogue mono-synth based on the classic original Bass Station but re-worked for the 21st century. It has two filters, two oscillators plus a third sub-oscillator, patch save and a fully analogue effects section. Add a step sequencer, arpeggiator, full sized keys and a powerful modulation section and you have the makings of a synth that is built for bass, but capable of so much more.

Bass Station II key features:
• Analogue synth: brand new version of the classic Bass Station
• Two distinct analogue filters
• Load and save patches
• Pattern-based Step Sequencer and Arpeggiator
• Dedicated Tweakable Controls
• Two Oscillators plus an additional Sub Oscillator
• Analogue effects section
• Flexible modulation featuring 2 Envelopes and 2 LFOs
• MIDI I/O and USB connectivity
• Players 'synth-action' keyboard with aftertouch"

Novation Bass Station II - Space Sounds [SOUNDSET]

video upload by Mr. Card

"My private collection of space sounds dedicated to Novation Bass Station II. I've always loved spacious and 3D sound. Novation Bass Station II allows you to produce many spatial sounds. I really like Novation Bass Station II for its functionality and sound. The soundset complements my few presets for the free genius Valhalla Supermassive reverb. With this soundset, you can take your instrument to the next level. Check out my soundset: https://bit.ly/bs2spacesounds"

Novation Celebrates Its History with Free 800MB Sample Pack & Synth Contest

Novation // Innovation Since 1992 Uploaded on Jan 30, 2014 NovationTV·181 videos

Interesting insight with EDP Wasp creator Chris Huggertt. At 2:25 he states the original BassStation used the VCA & filter of the Wasp, "the analog synth part of the Wasp."

Details on the Contest and Sample Pack (Press Release):

"Novation Releases a Heritage Celebration Short Film, FREE 800MB Sample Pack, and All-Star Judged Competition to WIN its Powerful Synth Line

Novation is celebrating its heritage with a short film that explores Novation past, present, and future, along with a completely free sample pack comprising over 800MB of loops, single hits, multi sampled patches, and drum kits from its unforgettable and modern classic synths.

In addition, Novation are offering three people the chance to win their choice of Bass Station II, UltraNova, or MiniNova - their award winning current lineup of synthesisers - in a make-a-track competition with an all-star judging panel including Paul Hartnoll (Orbital), Liam Howe (Lana Del Rey, Sneaker Pimps), Eats Everything, and Timo Maas in a competition running from the 4th of February to the 4th of March 2014.

Novation co-founder Ian Jannoway, legendary synth designer Chris Huggett, Gus Unger-Hamilton of Alt-J, Sneaker Pimps and Lana Del Ray producer Liam Howe, and product manager Matt Derbyshire all feature in a very special short film that charts the rise of Novation from humble beginnings to a company whose musical innovations support a user base that includes - amongst many others - Orbital, M4SONIC, Rudimental, T.E.E.D, Lunice, Alt-J, Teddy Riley, and Jimmy Mac - keyboardist for international sensation Lorde.

Supernova II, K Station, Bass Station, Drum Station, Bass Station II and Ultranova are all represented in the heritage sample pack, and Novation are launching a month long competition with an all-star judging panel including Paul Hartnoll (Orbital), Liam Howe (Lana Del Ray, Sneaker Pimps), Eats Everything, and Timo Maas to create a track using the pack - with three winners each winning their choice of either Ultranova, Mininova, or Bass Station II. The competition runs from 4th of February 2014 to 4th of March 2014.

To watch the short film, download the heritage sample pack, and enter the competition, go to www.novationmusic.com/heritage.

Good luck!"
