Orchid by Telepathic Instruments - Innovators and idea generators for chords and beats | SUPERBOO...

video upload by MusicStoreTV

"Telepathic Instruments has created Orchid, a beautifully designed synthesizer that invites you to develop harmonies and chord progressions and is perfect for overcoming creative blocks."

This is Orchid by Telepathic Instruments

video upload by Telepathic Instruments

Word is this is a project by Kevin Parker of Tame Impala.

"This is Orchid, an advanced chord generating hardware synthesizer developed for songwriters, producers and musicians to expand the possibilities of songwriting and musical exploration.

Using the synth’s unique chord logic system, users can craft seemingly endless variations of chords with ease and precision, together with its unprecedented chord voicing system that pitches and positions chords at the turn of a single dial. This process effectively expands the potential of the chords to an entire piano’s key set, not just the 12 velocity sensitive keys found on the unit.

Users can then use 'Performance' modes (Strum, Slop, Arpeggiator, Pattern and Harp) to shape and alter the chords to maximise creative expression. All this is brought into sonic existence by a rich polyphonic synth engine (virtual analogue, FM and reed piano emulation) with lush onboard ambient and modulation FX, plus a separate bass synth engine solely for bottom-end accompaniment.

When it’s time to go mobile the Orchid boasts stereo built-in speaker and long-life rechargeable battery charged via USB-C. Speaking of USB-C, the Orchid is capable of sending chords in MIDI form straight to the DAW exactly as they are crafted in the unit, or traditional 5-pin MIDI if you just want to talk straight to your beloved old poly.

Orchid. For Chords.

"Here's my review of the achingly hip and cool Orchid Chord Synth thingy from Telepathic Instruments and Tame Impala. Does it have any value as a useful piece of compostional technology or is it simply a musical toy for posh people?"

The Voicing Dial started it all - Telepathic Instruments Interview with Tom Cosm

via Telepathic Instruments

"The Voicing Dial started it all

When Kevin Parker wanted to create an ideas machine, he DMed electronic musician and educator Tom Cosm.

What began as a one-off handmade lockdown project soon became much, much more.

In an exclusive new interview with Synth History, Tom Cosm shares the story and the people behind Orchid."

"As a keyboardist, I'm used to playing lots of chords with one hand and trying to not move around the keyboard as much as possible. How you move to the next notes and the different inversions really matters." — Tom Cosm

Press release follows:

"BROOKLYN, NY — The Brooklyn Synth & Pedal Expo, perhaps the biggest East Coast event dedicated to electric and electronic gear for musicians with over 100 brands on display, returns to Greenpoint on October ‎17–18, transforming a 7,000-square-foot warehouse into an immersive playground for music creators.

Presented in partnership with the legendary synth store Three Wave Music and local up-and-coming guitar shop Tonewolf, the Expo offers a strictly in-the-headphones experience — letting attendees demo the latest synthesizers, effects pedals, and modular gear from over 100 brands in a noise-friendly environment.

Nestled in one of Brooklyn's most vibrant musical corridors, the show is expected to draw more about 2,000 visitors, a mix of musicians, producers, and gear enthusiasts.

"Intro to Synthesis" Workshops
This year, the Expo expands beyond its large exhibition floor with a new lineup of educational workshops focused on synthesis — from hands-on patch-building sessions to deep dives into modular workflows, led by working artists and builders. A schedule of the workshops will be announced soon.
