YAMAHA TQ5 × Ableton Telequencer | Reawakening the Legendary "Lately Bass" in an Improvised Session

The iconic FM bass sound of the 1980s, Lately Bass, still holds its own today with its punchy, glossy character. In this session, I brought it back to life using a YAMAHA TQ5 and a custom Ableton Live MIDI device called Telequencer.

Telequencer is a step sequencer that allows intuitive programming of pitch, duration, and MIDI CC. It also features shuffle rhythm, snake-style pattern progression (inspired by Make Noise Rene), pattern rotation, flexible step counts, and customizable reset points—tools that invite both structured and improvised approaches.

With this setup, I'm exploring a style of performance that simply wasn't possible in the 1980s:
dynamic, fluid sequencing combined with the raw sonic character of FM hardware.
This isn’t about nostalgia—it's about discovering what Lately Bass can do in a present-day creative environment."

Buchla 259e & Music Easel | Drone

video upload by Akihiko Matsumoto

"The West Coast Legacy of Spectral Dynamics
In the history of electronic instrument design, Don Buchla represents a fundamental departure from traditional subtractive synthesis. While the East Coast sought to emulate the orchestra through filtered harmonic structures, the Buchla philosophy centered on the manipulation of complex timbres through Frequency Modulation and Waveshaping. This technical foundation prioritizes the physical behavior of sound. It treats electricity as a living organism rather than a static signal. The Buchla 259e Twisted Waveform Generator remains a pinnacle of this approach, utilizing digital wavetables and nonlinear feedback loops to create textures that defy conventional classification."

Sinewave Reel from Morphagene (Reels Pack)
https://akihikomatsumoto.sellfy.store...

Recomposing the Architecture of Sound
The Make Noise Morphagene functions as a system for reorganizing recorded time. Each splice and grain becomes a modular event, where sound is reshaped through control voltage, feedback, and probability.

The Morphagene Reels Sample Pack ver.2.1 extends this system by providing a collection of reel structures designed for direct use. It includes 26 sets of curated sound materials that range from TB-303 inspired acid patterns to dubstep modulations, color bass textures, rave stabs, Wave atmospheres, retro PCM timbres, breakbeats, and industrial percussive elements. Every reel is pre-labeled with accurate splice points, enabling immediate interaction within Morphagene without additional editing."

Ambient | LYRA-8 & Ableton REcho

video upload by Akihiko Matsumoto

"The SOMA LYRA-8 has earned a reputation as one of the most unconventional analog synthesizers ever built. It does not follow the rules of standard pitch, MIDI sequencing, or predictable modulation. Instead, it generates sound through an organic interaction of oscillators, distortion stages, and feedback paths. Every note is less a fixed frequency and more a living event shaped by your touch, voltage instabilities, and the nonlinear behavior of its circuitry.

Minimoog & Ableton SOLFA – A Generative MIDI Sequencer for Minimal and Experimental Music

video upload by Akihiko Matsumoto

"SOLFA – A Generative MIDI Sequencer for Minimal and Experimental Music

https://akihikomatsumoto.sellfy.store...

Inspired by Arvo Pärt, Designed for Creative Exploration

SOLFA is a generative MIDI sequencer for Ableton Max for Live, built for electronic music producers, experimental composers, ambient sound designers, and those interested in algorithmic composition. Inspired by the works of Arvo Pärt, this tool allows you to create evolving, hypnotic patterns that seamlessly blend tonal minimalism with rhythmic complexity.

Minimal Pitch, Infinite Possibilities

At the core of SOLFA is a simple seven-note sequence. These notes are randomized across octaves, generating organic melodic shifts. This structured yet fluid approach results in endlessly varying musical textures that maintain a coherent harmonic identity.

Independent Rhythmic Structures

SOLFA employs isorhythmic principles, where the pitch sequence operates independently from the rhythm pattern. This allows for intricate, evolving interactions between melody and rhythm, giving rise to unexpected yet deeply musical results.

Ideal for Generative and Experimental Music

Whether you're composing ambient soundscapes, intricate polyrhythmic pieces, or avant-garde electronic music, SOLFA provides a unique method for crafting evolving compositions with minimal input. By embracing randomness within defined constraints, it encourages exploration while maintaining musical cohesion.

Unlock New Creative Dimensions

Transform simple ideas into dynamic, evolving sequences with SOLFA. Experiment with chance, structure, and unpredictability to discover new musical possibilities. Now available for Max for Live."

Buchla Sparkle | Music Easel

video upload by Akihiko Matsumoto

"Buchla Modular Synth Sample Pack
https://akihikomatsumoto.sellfy.store...

An inquiry into timbre shaped by the circuitry of a singular electronic instrument
A system built for exploration
Don Buchla’s electronic instruments can be understood as musical tools and as environments for exploration. They allow performers to play in a physical and expressive way, yet they also invite a method of working that resembles research into the behavior of voltage and timbre.
Buchla did not follow the conventions of keyboard based instruments. Instead he created systems in which sound could be shaped through touch sensitive controls, complex modulation, and freely arranged signal paths. As a result, each patch becomes both a performance setup and a place to investigate how tones, noise sources, control voltages and modulation can interact within an electronic space.

This sample pack carries that spirit forward through recordings made with the Buchla Music Easel Modern. It offers a survey of sonic behavior, inviting listeners to study the subtle warmth that emerges when complex oscillators interact. It highlights the characteristic percussive transients of low pass gates. It captures broadband noise shaped by minute spectral movements. It presents drones formed by slow feedback interactions and microscopic frequency shifts. The goal is to provide raw material for creators who wish to work closely with the textures that define this family of instruments."

Ableton Datashifter Max for Live Device

video upload by Akihiko Matsumoto

https://akihikomatsumoto.sellfy.store...

"Most glitch processors treat rhythm as something to destroy. Datashifter takes a more controlled approach. It breaks the surface of percussion while preserving the force underneath.

Designed as an Ableton Max for Live device, Datashifter captures short fragments of incoming stereo audio into an internal memory system, then reads those fragments back through multiple voices. These voices can stutter, reverse, jump to earlier moments, or shift playback speed in octave based steps.

The result is not a simple repeat effect. It feels closer to a live editing system for drum time. The groove continues to move forward, while small pieces of its memory are rearranged, folded, interrupted, and returned to the beat.

A Beat Is Not Just a Grid
