"THE PPG STORY In 1975, Wolfgang Palm made synthesizer history with the PPG 1002. An early prototype featured retractable patch cables, but in the final production model, these were replaced with rotary switches for more versatile modulation. A key advantage of the 1002 over its competitors was its temperature-compensated VCO circuit, now further refined in this reissue, preserving its iconic sound.
The PPG 1020 (1977) introduced digital oscillators, paving the way for the 360 Wavecomputer in 1979, which marked the beginning of wavetable synthesis. This was followed by milestones such as the PPG Wave 2.3 (1984) with MIDI and the PPG Waveterm B (1985).
After PPG was dissolved in 1987, Wolfgang Palm collaborated with Steinberg and later co-developed the Waldorf Microwave (1989). In the 2000s, he released software synthesizers under his own name, including the PPG Wavegenerator, Wavemapper, Infinite Pro, and Phonem. In 2020, Palm transferred the PPG technologies to Brainworx, which became part of Native Instruments in 2023.
At the same time, Cornel Hecht, part of the PPG team since 2012, reviewed Wolfgang Palm’s original handwritten schematics of the PPG 1002. His mission: to faithfully bring the analog circuitry of 1975 into the present. The first prototype impressed Native Instruments, laying the foundation for this exclusive reissue. Wolfgang Palm: "What's labeled PPG should also be PPG inside! That was and still is my motto. The new edition of the PPG 1002 is based on the original PPG circuitry."
But this reissue is more than just a synthesizer, it’s a fusion of technology and ecological responsibility. The PPG 1002 is produced CO₂-neutral, and every purchase supports sustainable environmental projects, such as Liquid Sky’s reforestation initiative in Portugal. This cover song series contains my own recreations of my favourite songs from the last 50 years. The original music from which I take inspiration belong to their respective owners. I recreate tracks only for personal passion and to pay homage to these tracks.
My intention is not to create covers that sound exactly like the original (if you want to hear identical sounds, please listen the original). It's more of an inspiration with my sounds from the old synthesizers from the past and of course the great appreciation for the original performers and producers."

From patch 25, each patch name and sound file name has the PPG Transient name embedded in it; e.g. Sumu 34 T864 is using PPG Transient T864. I invite the audience to listen to both the PPG original sample and Sumu patch I created from it to assess the transformation (the objective is to create something new and different, not a 1:1 replica).
Starting from Patch Sumu 17 Clouds (and almost exclusively used till Patch 50), I’ve discovered an another way (compared to Default patch / most factory patches and user manual recommendations) to patch the Sumu Partials module. This opens up Sumu to ultra innovative sounds; you can use Sumu as a granular synthesizer with each grain harmonic having a different envelope / amplitude…
Sumu has become one of my all time favorite digital synthesizer along with Waldorf Iridium, Fred’s Lab Manatee and Korg modwave native.

Orinda, CA, May 15, 2024 — California-based electronic instrument maker Groove Synthesis today announced that they have added high-resolution sampling capability to their critically acclaimed Advanced Wavetable Synthesizer, the 3rd Wave.
This much-requested new feature allows owners to sample up to 30 seconds of 16-bit, 48 kHz, monophonic audio into the synth directly or by importing audio over USB, and use it as a new oscillator type alongside the 3rd Wave’s powerful wavetable and virtual analog sound engines. This significantly expands the sound palette of the synthesizer. Now owners can create custom sounds that feature sampled acoustic instruments, sound effects, and other sources.
The company will preview a new OS that provides this capability at the Superbooth24 music expo in Berlin, Germany from May 16-18 at booth #0246. The upgrade will be available free of charge to 3rd Wave owners as a download from the company’s website upon official release.
“As fans of the original PPG and its ultra-rare Waveterm sampling option, we thought it would
be exciting to add that capability to the 3rd Wave’s existing architecture — if it was technically possible,” said Groove Synthesis founder Bob Coover. “It took some tricky programming, but we did it and we think 3rd Wave owners are going to love it. It’s a dream come true for everyone who wanted the full PPG-plus-Waveterm experience, and now it’s within reach.”
While the 3rd Wave has roots in the classic digital wavetable synths of the past, it takes the concept firmly into the 21st century with a lush, expansive sound that’s a product of its expanded wavetables and analog filters. It’s hybrid design features 24-voices and 4-part multi-timbral operation, which is the equivalent of having four independent 6-voice synthesizers controlled by a single keyboard. Each of its three oscillators per voice can generate a classic PPG-era wavetable, a modern high-resolution wavetable, an analog modeled waveform — and now multi-sampled audio. With its industry-first WavemakerTM tool, users can create custom wavetables in a single step through proprietary sample-to-wave technology, allowing almost unlimited sound sculpting opportunities.

"The Blue Journey 128 sound set for the M synthesizer explores the technology from the past that made PPG and Waldorf Music machines historical landmarks. It highlights firmware version 1.07 and 1.08 that brought a slew of functionally to the M; almost giving it new synthesizer engines without sacrificing user experience!
The first 32 [1-32] patches are using MW1 mode only with PPG Transitions (short 22kHz / 16bit mono samples) exclusively; PPG Transitions reading feature was introduced in firmware version 1.07. Those patches have the Transition number + Slot number in the M Patch Name, so it’s easy to rebuild (e.g. T143 S3 Low Rez Vox is the patch name of patch number 1 on the M, using PPG Transition T143 in M Slot 3).
The required samples are from the original PPG library and have already been renamed for use in the M. A detailed overview and instructions for loading the samples into there M are available in the downloads after purchase.
The next 32 [33-64] patches are exploring MW2 mode new features: new digital filters were introduced in firmware version 1.08.
Those patches have the M digital filter type in the M Patch Name (and in the file name on synth_nyc website and bandcamp) (e.g. B Stop Marbles is the patch name of patch number 36 on the M, using the B Stop filter), so it’s easy to know which filter was used and showcasing the M firmware 1.08 capability.
The last 64 [65-128] patches are a mix of MW1 and MW2 modes but not using any Transitions.
In The Blue Journey sound set, you will find many vocal textures, vocal plucks, vocal basses and vocal pads because this is probably where the M excels; where it’s ‘magic’ and uniqueness are more present. There are also many other leads, basses, and even VA patches; and of course many wavetable scanning patches, that can make it to any retro or modern production.

"Functionally the EVU is exactly a PPG Wave 2.3 in a rack but with the addition of individual panning and individual volume for each voice.
This particular EVU has quite a pedigree. Probably has travel mores miles than Lance Armstrong at this point. It was the demo unit that the North America PPG product specialist used back in the day at his presentations. This very EVU has also been on several tours with the band SAGA.
We have updated all boards so now the guts of this machine could work straight up in a 2.3 (with 2.3 EPROMS).
With system 8.3 you can access all the parameters over MIDI or as originally envision by Mr Palm, the EVU can be remote controlled by a Waveterm.
This amazing instrument has received the full Synthropology™️ treatment. That means that we attended to every potential weak spot that we have seen across the vast number of PPGs that we have repaired/updated/serviced in our 25+ years of servicing these German wonder machines in blue.

There are a few visual imperfections. They are barely visibly in a normal studio (lighting) setting.
There are some minor scratches on the front panel, but it is hard to even capture them in the pictures. Nevertheless we tried to make the imperfections visible as much as possible in the pictures for full disclosure.
That being said, this PPG EVU presents really well and looks beautiful and very potent.

A new PPG wave 2.2 Sound Tutorial
One of the most impressive intros for synthesizer geeks is Deeper and Deeper by The Fixx from the year 1983.
I tried a lot and I came closest to the result when I triggered the PPG wave 2.2 synthesizer from the Linndrum. The resolution is changed manually so results this rattling sound. In the Wave synthesizer memory is a wavetable sound.
