"torso electronics presents a live session recorded at ikii, an intimate listening space for sound and art in Berlin.

In this episode, Nene H performs with the modular system at the centre of her current live and studio practice. The set moves through raw, buzzing, glassy textures, uneasy rhythmic patterns, and moments of melancholia.

Her live setup is entirely hardware-based, with no computer, timecode, or pre-recorded material. Its voices include a Make Noise DPO, Synthesis Technology Cloud Terrarium, Erica Synths Bass VCO, and Noise Engineering Basimilus, summed through an Intellijel Mixup.

Sequencing comes from the T1 and Make Noise René 2. René moves around a grid rather than following a conventional line from beginning to end, allowing patterns to appear in orders that would be difficult to write by hand.

Rather than following a fixed structure, Nene H records the system, samples it, and plays the material again. Sounds move continuously between synthesis, recording, sampling, and performance, allowing the set to find its shape in real time.

The result is raw, restless, and emotionally charged, shaped by Nene H’s close relationship with a system that has developed its own personality over time.

About Nene H
Nene H is a Turkish-Azerbaijani producer, DJ, and live artist based in Berlin. A conservatory-trained pianist, her work moves between club music, improvisation, composition, and collaborative performance.

Her catalog spans Standard Deviation, Intrepid Skin, Live From Earth, Incienso, and UMAY. Her albums include Ali علي and Second Skin. Her forthcoming EP, Seltsame Fabeln, arrives October 16, 2026 on UMAY."

We start by establishing a gritty base sound on the Speak & Glitch, dialing in some fundamental compression and reverb on the S-4 to glue it together. From there, we dive into the deep end—leaning heavily into the S-4’s robust modulation capabilities to transform the audio into evolving, quasi-generative soundscapes.

"In this extended, unannotated sound demo, I’m using the Cyma Forma Rnd as a standalone generative synthesizer, processing its audio live through the Torso Electronics S-4.

🎛️ Routing & Setup:

• Track 1 (S-4): Acts as the main track for the Rnd.
• Track 2 (S-4): Heavily processed, functioning as an auxiliary send track for the Rnd to create vast textures.
• Tracks 3 & 4 (S-4): Occasionally bringing in a drum loop to anchor the generative chaos.

Live Processing with Torso S-4 | DecadeBridge Sn + MTL Purpll Drone Improvisation

"An improvised hardware session exploring live textural processing and generative drones.

In this performance, I’m using the Torso Electronics S-4 as the central sonic playground and processing brain. The Montreal Assembly (MTL) Purpll is set to drone mode, acting as a self-contained, unstable harmonic generator. Alongside it, the DecadeBridge Sn provides a gritty, compact synthesizer voice.

Both devices are routed into separate, dedicated inputs on the S-4, allowing for independent live looping, granular warping, and spatial sculpting on the fly.

The performance was recorded live from the S-4 output, then lightly mixed and mastered in Pro Tools

Sculpting the Duos // Live Soundscapes with Torso S-4

"A raw, live-recorded ambient improvisation using the Hikari Duos synthesizer routed through the Torso Electronics S-4 sculpting sampler for real-time processing and sound design.

This performance was captured entirely live in a single take, presented without any edits or arrangements after the fact. The master audio was lightly mixed and mastered in Pro Tools for clarity and depth.

Signal Flow & Routing:
• Source: Each of the two unique oscillators from the Hikari Duos is sent to its own dedicated channel on the Torso S-4 (Track 1 and Track 2).
• Processing: Both input tracks are actively sculpted live on the S-4 and routed through an Aux Send on Track 4 for shared spatial effects and texture generation.

Torso S-4 POLY Engine: Turning Samples Into Synths (Torso Explorations Vol. 34)

"In Volume 34 of my Torso Explorations series, we are diving deep into the POLY engine on the Torso Electronics S-4 sculpting sampler. While the S-4 is an incredible texture and ambient machine, the POLY engine transforms it into an expressive, 8-voice polyphonic synthesizer by arranging samples chromatically across the keys.

I walk you through how to configure and play the POLY engine using two external MIDI controllers: the Keith McMillen QuNexus keyboard for manual playing, and the Korg SQ-1 for sequencing.

The POLY engine gives you per-voice control over amplitude and filter envelopes, allowing you to sculpt raw samples into beautifully playable synth patches.

• Track 1: Demonstrating the core mechanics and envelope shaping of the POLY engine using a built-in stock sample.

• Track 2: A quick, live workflow showing how to sample an external acoustic instrument (my mandolin) using the S-4’s internal microphone and instantly flip it into a polyphonic synth patch.

"Welcome to Volume 34 of my Torso S-4 Explorations.

For this improvised live performance, I set a strict creative limitation: use only one single sample (a drum loop) and one single track on the Torso Electronics S-4. The goal was to push the boundaries of the S-4's granular and sound-design engines to see just how far a single piece of source audio could be stretched, morphed, and reshaped into a variety of sonic landscapes.

The performance was recorded live with only minor edits for pacing. Final audio was lightly mixed and mastered in Pro Tools."

"In this video, we use the S4 random modulator to turn a simple sine wave into a melodic sequence.

Starting from a tonal sample in the Factory Library, we shape the sound with drive and reverb, then map random modulation to pitch using the Speed parameter. From there, we adjust polarity, length, rate, and variation to explore how the melody moves."
