ARP / SOLINA STRING-ENSEMBLE - HQ SOUND DEMO

video upload by AnalogAudio1

"The Solina String-Ensemble came out 1973 and was the first "stand alone" electronic string ensemble - the original "string machine". It was a portable, cutdown version of the string ensemble, which was a part of the Eminent 310U organ. It sounds different to the Eminent 310U, although quite similar. It uses "divide-down" organ technology, is full polyphonic and has a very characterful sound.

The Solina was a great success in the seventies and was used by many artists on many recordings. The String-Ensemble was developed and produced by Eminent in Holland. ARP bought the rights to sell it under their name. Outside the USA the "ARP STRING-ENSEMBLE" is known as "SOLINA STRING-ENSEMBLE". For the US market, ARP just put ARP-stickers on it...

Many manufacturers tried to copy it (Logan String Melody, Elka Rhapsody, Crumar Multiman, Farfisa String Orchestra, Jen String Machine, Siel Orchestra, just to name a few). Indeed, every organ manufacturer had one to offer...

but the Solina remains the best (or at least one of the best) with his fat, unique and charming sound.

USERS:

Edgar Froese (Tangerine Dream) used it on many records (Green Desert, Aqua, Le Park, Underwater Sunlight, etc.), Herbie Hancock (Secrets), AIR (Moon Safari), Mike Oldfield, Richard Wright / Pink Floyd (Shine On You Crazy Diamond), Kraftwerk (Autobahn album), Elton John (Song for Guy), Nick Straker (A walk in the park), Geoff Downes / Buggles (Video killed the radio star), the Bee Gees and the Carpenters (on live performances) ..."

LFO Electric piano from the Juno G

"Just a rambling tune demonstrating one of the G's best sound banks i.e Piano. played through the ESQ 1 and a bottle of wine:) Some of the vintage elec. pianos are good, this is my favourite, has a really warm vintage sound that may not come across too well on youtube audio"

Ensoniq SQ-80 Demo Song: Pride & Prosperity

"A rather cheesy song I wrote on the SQ-80. Unfortunately I was only able to record this in low quality before the synthesizer glitched up and I had to reset the memory so this is the only recording I have."

Pulsar synth with KP3

"Just added some cheap drums with some sound form the pulsar and some KP3 effects. Nothing is edited so there are some raw sounds within.

Crazy Modular Carnival Theme

YouTube via zthee. "It sounds like a deranged carnival theme to me..."

Modular Synth Bleeps

"A patch where the digital outputs from the CGS31 triggers the sequencer both up and down. The CGS31 is clocked extranly from a FG controlled by the sequencer. Hence some steps will be shorter and others will be longer - causing the sequncer to behave kind of spastic.

And then there's 2 function generators with some cross modulation that goes into the CGS38 making all the sounds..

I added some reverb to the clip."

"When I first bought this last week i thought, what the hell have I just bought. All the reviews were good but I just wasn't hearing it first time. Then I found the magic, it took a while but I found it and it hasn't gone away...you just have to find that extra dimension of this analogue beauty. Im using guitar rig 2 for initial distortion and the delay....terrible video quality but then I spend my money on synths."

Microsia - molecular sounds

YouTube via salzmanufaktur
"Microsia is somewhat between a computer game and an instrument. Yep, it reminds a lil of Electroplankton but it works on its own way. Microsia has a couple of tone generators and some FX and they're all controlled by their own "molecules". It's a stunning piece of software design and it's big fun to play with!
You'll find it here: http://www.microsia.de/index.php"

Microsia - Colors

"Playing with one of Microsia's presets. I did some color grading in Vegas8, so these are not the real colors of the program."

A bit like electroplankton on steroids.

VHF Silicon - Kyle Evans - 2009

"VHF Silicon
Kyle Evans 2009

VHF Silicon is an interactive audio/video installation showed in SAICs spring 2009 undergraduate exhibition. This piece is an experiment in computer automation and the compatibility of old and new technologies. Computer generated digital processes are used to control and modulate three analog video signals. A computer program communicates with hand built analog circuitry by means of the Art Bus micro controller. The circuitry switches and modulates three separate analog video channels that are mixed and distorted onto an easily manipulated early 70s television set. Three ultra-sonic proximity sensors are placed surrounding the television each controlling a separate video signal and responding to viewers positions and movements throughout the space. Multiple viewers and relative proximity to the sensors all effect and modulate the displayed video. When the sensors are not being activated, the computer runs autonomously and begins randomly switching through the video signals. The sounds were created using an analog modular synthesizer and are synchronized to the switching and processing of their corresponding video."
