Ludwig Phase II guitar synthesizer - A vintage FX pedal
"The Phase II, made in limited numbers during 1970-71, is a vintage FX guitar unit. It includes a fuzz, a tremolo (Animation), and a voltage-controlled filtering section (Formant Trajectories-Parallel, Counter, and Vowel switches). The circuit uses only discreet components. A control panel contains seven switches (light/change color) and four sliders which alter several effects, including fuzz, voltage-controlled filters and gating, combined in a box that unfolds to reveal a rocker pedal and four footswitches. There is nothing out there in today's market that duplicates the animation and filtering possibilities. With some practice, many unusual and unique sounds are possible. Some of the effects (including the famous "Yoy, yoy" sound) can be heard on tracks by Primus "Pork Soda", Pearl Jam "Binaural", Sonic Youth "The Diamond Sea", "Washing Machine" and Beck's "Cold Brains" intro.
- Fuzz (includes voice fuzz)
- Animation - FFM, Fuzz RPT or both and Fast/slow start (switches),
Alter Intensity and Rate with three sliders.
- Voltage-Controlled Filtering - "Format Trajectories": Parallel, Counter, Vowel .
- Foot Pedal with Primary and Stereo outputs (Bypass Balance control), Lo/Hi Z inputs
(Lo Z Balance control) plus four foot switches: Stereo, Bypass, Animation, Fuzz f
Product Information:
- Ludwig Phase II Synthesizer
- Model #9000 -- Serial # 1529
- Supply Voltage: 120/240 VAC, 50/60 cycles, 15 watts
Only a few Ludwig Phase II units are still in existence."
GPS Beatmap
GPS Beatmap from Jesse Stiles on Vimeo.
"GPS Beatmap: Planet as Control Surface. Presented by Face Removal Services.
In 2006, Face Removal Services created the Beatmap, a GPS-based music instrument that transforms the face of the planet into an enormous DJ booth.
Looping musical phrases are represented on a map as overlapping circular territories. As the vehicle approaches the center of a circle, the volume increases. In areas of the map where territories overlap the vehicle generates dynamic mixes of the overlapping musical phrases. By exploring a very large map of many overlapping territories the Beatmap creates complex, dynamic mash-ups.
The map can be explored on foot, by plane, boat, train, or automobile. In this footage the map is explored by car on the Bonneville Salt Flats, allowing the user to freely accelerate, swerve, and slam to a stop for optimum musical control of the instrument.
The Beatmap can be positioned anywhere on Earth and expanded or contracted to any size by manipulating a continuous stream of GPS data. The Beatmap can thus be used to create drive-through mash-ups on any surface of any size, from a tennis court to the Atlantic Ocean.
Exploring the Beatmap is like investigating a new city while navigating a DJ's crate of records. Obscure landmarks begin to gain new significance by their association with unique musical juxtapositions. For instance, a treacherous pothole may invite multiple drive-bys simply because of its proximity to a particularly satisfying polyrhythm. The Beatmap is currently be readied for deployment in locations near and far."

"Don't leave me this way" - on Böhm Station One
YouTube via organfairy.
"This melody was originally performed by Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes though many people know it in a more up-tempo version by the Communards.
I use the German Böhm workstation for my version of this disco-soul classic and in this video I investigate the wiring of the expression pedal plugs on the backside of the instrument as I want to adapt an old Elka pedal for the Böhm.
The green thing I hold in my hands are a test cable with a small screwdriver attached in one end and a 100 Ohm resistor in the other. This way I can connect the wires in the plug for testing where the switches are supposed to be but at the same time I don't have to worry about shorting the power supply."

"An arpeggiator is a device that breaks an incoming chord down into a single note line and repeats the line
rhythmically in accordance with a preset program. This feature is the Gekko's primary function. You can determine the repetition rate, duration of the notes and the tonal range of the generated notes
Arpeggio down: All notes are generated in descending order.
Arpeggio up: All notes are generated in ascending order.
Alternate: All notes are generated alternating in ascending and escending order.
Octave down: Extends the range by the next lower octave.
Octave up: Extends the range by the next higher octave.
1 Octave: Sets the tonal range to one octave.
Gate half: Sets the duration of the note to half the note's value.
Gate double: Sets the duration of the note to twice the note's value.
Legato: Sets the duration of the note to the note’s value.
Clock 1/8: Sets the repetition rate to an 8th note.
Clock 1/16: Sets the repetition rate to a 16th note.
Clock 1/32: Sets the repetition rate to a 32th note.
Tempo down: Reduces the tempo in 1-BPM increments.
Tempo up: Increases the tempo in 1- BPM increments.
120 BPM: Sets the tempo to 120 BPM.
Hold Mode: Switches the Hold Mode on and off. When Hold Mode is activated, the arpeggio continues to play after you release the chord. Once you play another chord, the notes of this chord are arpeggiated"
