Electric Independence: Xeno and Oaklander

some synth spotting via motherboard.tv. via Seema
"Liz Wendelbo and Sean McBride make up the minimal electronics duo known as Xeno and Oaklander. Instead of geeking out on software like much of their Brooklyn brethren, the pair record their songs live in their home studio, playing analog synthesizers and drum machines exclusively. On this episode of Electric Independence, we learn how this handsome duo of Norwegian/French/American heritage fashions a raw, distopian 80’s dance beat that buzzes with a sense of robot horror."

Korg MS-20ic Legacy Controller

"Don't expect a masterpiece here, just fooling around with the knobs and the patch bay.. Visited a music store the other day and stumbled upon this, I was offered it for a REAL bargain price (70 bucks!), needless to say I bought it on looks alone :) Turns out the vst plug-in its bundled with ain't half bad either! I know it's not a real MS-20 and yes the original might have a bit warmer sound, but this is about as close as you'll get to the real deal for 70 bucks :P "

Roland MC-303 Demo

"This is a quick demo of the Roland MC-303. I find the 303 is best at drums and bubbly synth sounds so that's what I did in this video.

For those of you interested in the hardware side of things all the sounds are coming from the MC-303 to the Line in on an SP-808 (Just so i have a nice big fader to control the master volume) and then onto the PC. The MC-303 is also MIDI linked to the SP-808 so I have layer volume control via the Mic/Line fader on whichever layer is currently selected (which is why it looks like I am doing nothing when the new layers fade in)."

Casio RZ-1 Demo

YouTube via snolan1990
"here is a quick overview of the sounds and functions of the Casio RZ-1Digital Sampling Rhythm Composer.

The RZ-1 was released in 1986 as a competitor to machines like the Korg DDD-1 and Roland TR-707, However its limited functions and low quality sound set meant that it was quickly forgotten, The RZ-1 can be heard on a few early house records and pops up here and there in more recent music.

My RZ-1 has a non functioning sampling board and I am looking for schematics and high quality pictures of the circuit board on the plastic side of the casing so if any of you have a fully functional RZ-1 that you are willing to open up and take some pics of I would be very greatful."

Oldschool Reel To Reel House Jam

YouTube via snolan1990
"I recommend you watch in high quality for the best possible audio.

This is a jam to test out my newest toys the Roland JX-3P synthesizer, the Roland JSQ-60 sequencer and the Teac A 4300SX that I was given in Florida (Thanks Madge!). This is by no means a finished track but it's the basic idea for one and I might put the time in and make a full track of it.

For the gear nerds out there

Synth - Roland JX-3P & Juno-60
Drums - Roland TR-707, TR-727, MC-303 (kick) as well as Casio RZ-1 for its sweet cowbell and claps
Samples - SP-808
Sequencer - Roland JSQ-60

There is 4 types of sync working together here Din (from the JSQ to the 7x7s) MIDI (from the 7x7s to the MC-303 & RZ-1) trigger signal (from the 727 to the JX-3P's sequencer) and DCB (from the JSQ to the Juno)"

Filter House Jam #1

"This is just a quick demo of something I am working on that I would like your opinion and advice on, I have the basics there but I'm not sure what to do next. I was thinking maybe a cut up spoken word style vocal and eventually multi tracking some proper Juno bass or pads on top of it but any and all advice and opinion would be welcome.

For those of you into the hardware side of things here the SP-808 is master with a sequence of samples sitting in it. The TR-727 is slaved to the SP-808 and the TR-707 is slaved to the TR-727. The Juno is has Hold & the Arpeggio on with the 707's Rim triggering the steps. The patch on the Juno is a mixture of the two recommended Percussion sound patches in the Juno-60 manual and the eagle eyed among you may have spotted that the square, saw and sub osc are all off and the sound is generated entirely by self resonance in the VCF."
