Simian Mobile Disco's synth-loaded studio

More shots on Music Radar

"With two studio albums and a slew of remixes behind them, Simian Mobile Disco (AKA James ‘Jas’ Shaw – pictured left – and James Ford) are one of the most-talked-about production duos of the past few years (Ford has also produced for Arctic Monkeys and Klaxons). Future Music recently headed over to the rented London studio that spawned 2009’s Temporary Pleasure long-player, and discovered that SMD’s reputation as synth-heads is well-deserved."

Regarding the modular:
"The Wardrobe is the name given to Jas Shaw’s most recent eBay purchase, a unique modular synth built by Steve Urquhart. “He had a gig at T in the Park Scotland and as I live in Aberdeenshire, his guys picked it up for him,” says Steve."

Update via Yusynth in the comments: "This modular is mainly based on Jurguen Haible's, Steve Thomas', Graham Hinton's, Derek Revell's and Yves Usson's designs as it is stated in the Future Music article. It is nice to see artists acknowledging the contribution of the SDIY community."

Update via Seppe in the comments: "It's a very late comment, but I just discovered a better look at the studio here" [video]

Non-Somnambulistic Part 19 - modular synth + Numerology

YouTube via doctorvague
"The very tail end of another long jam. Audio is right off the camera, dog barks at 5:10 and all. I kinda like the raw-ness and rough edges of it. Couldn't get that vibe from the direct mix.

I heart and used the following in this episode: Synthesizers.com mostly + MOTM 650 and 440, + STG Post Lawsuit filter + Modcan VCDO . Volta used for sync into the 4 rows of a Moon Modular trigger sequencer. Numerology was doing other things earlier but by this point it's set on like 31 against 29 or something to mess with yo head. And it may indeed drive you crazy. That's your problem now."

Ensoniq EPS 16 Plus - More Sampled Drums Part 2

"More sampled drums from the now vintage Ensoniq EPS 16+ Sampler. Still underated in my opinion. Here for your consideration is Part 2, for anyone who is curious about how this sampler sounds."

Rendezvous - Studio Session 12 (Moogerfooger)

YouTube via OfficialRendezvous
"In this clip Itai and Hagai are experimenting with Moog's Moogerfooger Low Pass Filter (MF-101) and Ring Modulator (MF-102) on the bass line of 'End Of The World', the last recorded track from their upcoming album.

Rendezvous themselves are a two piece band consisting of Itai Simon and Hagai Izenberg. their work can be easily cataloged as instrumental and experimental, bringing together both retro sounds and ideas to this electronic contemporary world.

Highly appreciated mixer and producer Dave Bascombe (Depeche Mode, Tears For Fears) is now mixing Rendezvous' debut album in London.

"Here is part four of a six part series documenting the sound and functionality of the Realistic (Moog) MG-1 Synthesizer. There is a lot of talking in this one, but we finally get to the polyphonic section!"

Rubycon Bassline.mov

"Tangerine Dreams classic bassline from the album 'Rubycon'.
This was performed live on a synthesizers.com modular synthesizer. The q960 sequencer and Q963 Trigger Bus are employed as well as two switches, 5 oscillators, 3 filters, 2 amplifiers, 4 envelopes, 3 mixers, an Instrument Interface, a Signal Processor, Distributor, Pan fade and Fixed Filter Bank.
Probably overkill, but hey, I gotta try to get a Moog modular sound outta this!

Six stages most of the time from the sequencer with a reset to 4 stages and accents from the Trigger Bus. The Bus also controls the rest beats. An oscillator and STG Sea Devils filter is used to pulse the drone note. Sequenced notes are C1, C2, C1, C2, A#1, G1.
