Electric Independence: Growing

"On the new episode of Electric Independence, we head into Growing's practice space to look at their equipment and get the story behind their transformation from effects-heavy drone into the complex, synapse-shifting sound they create today. Oh yeah, they also added a third member (and vocals, kind of) and just released a new album entitled 'PUMPS!' They don't front on their musical prowess. "We couldn't play anything else. This is what we play." How they play "this" is what this episode is all about.

This synth features one analog square and saw waveform VCO (voltage controled oscillator) with a huge pitch range, from subsonic to ultrasonic sound.

One square and triangle waveform LFO (low frequency oscillator), that modulates the VCO for the vibrato effect creating old school arcade Atari-like sounds.

White noise generator that triggers the VCO and can create percussion like sounds.

8 step Sequencer with note on/off switch and pitch knob for each step

Also, it has a built in vactrol based Low Pass Filter with cut off and ressonance controls that can be modulated by the LFO, the VCO depth and the sequencer, creating a wider sort of timbres and sound possibilities.

The Mochika2 features a MIDI input to sync the Mochika with any midi device sending midi clock signals, the mochika can sync 1, 2, 4 and up to 8 times the tempo of the master clock midi device. Also the instrument is ligthed with 1 bright red led that indicates the LFO Rate, and 8 red leds to indicate the step that is being played. Very useful when you play it on a dark stage.
The Analog Sequencer is packed in a cool laser cut clear acrilic case that shows all the hand made analog circuitry.
The instrument is powered directly from 110V or 220V AC.

Modular: Soft-Touch Knobs

"I received some knobs today from MOTM/Synthesis Technology and wanted to see how they compared. They are:

1. Tiptop Audio
2. The Harvestman
3. MOTM/Synthesis Technology
4. Toppobrillo
5. Flight of Harmony

Each knob has a really nice non-slip grippy rubber surface. My favorites of the group are 2 and 3. The rubber on these knobs has slightly more grip.

NOTE: The knobs from MOTM/Synthesis Technology are a custom Rogan knob that Paul had made for his Frac Rack modules. They are not currently available for purchase from distributors. He was clearing out old stock so I picked them up for my DIY Eurorack modules. However, all of the other knobs are still available from various distributors.
