The Manta on Analog Industries

Analog Industries has a good write-up on the Snyderphonics Manta if you were ever curious about the controller.

"It is functionally similar to the monome, inasmuch as it is (at its base level) a bunch of buttons and a bunch of LEDs. However, the thing that makes this a vast improvement over the monome is that it has several different levels of control in addition to the single on/off state of the monome."

Active Attenuators
"The Active Attenuators module is a cascading bipolar gain processor which combines attenuation, mixing, signal processing, and distribution in one general-purpose module. There are three bipolar gain cells (top, middle, and bottom) which have two inputs per cell. The left input of each cell is normalised to the left input of the cell above, save the first which is normalised to +5 volts. As it ships, the top two cells have a range of -100 percent to +100 percent gain, and the bottom cell has a 200 percent gain range.

For example, take an LFO running at -5V to +5V and turn it into 0 to 10V with the top cell, send fixed CV to a second module with the middle cell, and then amplify a weak signal with the bottom cell. Or be boring and just use it as 3 attenuators. I'll probably do that myself.

Whatever you do, this Swiss Army knife of signal processing is sure to be a benefit to your electronic music studio.

This module has a physical depth of only 2 inches.

Price: $195"

Active Multiples
"The Active Multiples module is a set of 3 4-output buffered multiples. The lower multiple has two inputs allowing it to act as a unity gain mixer as well.

Buffered multiples are important for control and trigger routing because they ensure that no unexpected impedance loading damages the scaling of control voltages or the strength of trigger signals.

This module has a physical depth of only 2 inches.

Price: $195"

Synthesizer-building workshop in Los Angeles

via Noah: "If you're in the Los Angeles, CA area next week, I'd like to invite you all to join me in the workshop I'm teaching. In a very small group, we'll be putting together and customizing the basic Electric Eel synthesizer design which I've designed. If you're not familiar it with it, it's a mobile platform for synths, a single instrument containing a keyboard, knobs, generator, amplifier, and speaker - it has no on/off or volume switch; its volume is proportional to how hard you slide, bounce, or bow the generator! This is the wiki where all the technical information is published. And this is the url for the workshop..."

SunSyn Mk2 Discontinued

via Jomox "We are sorry -

but we are unable to continue production of the SunSyn Mk2 because of technical reasons.
It was a trial to revitalize this product after it's 10 years history, but the problems of aquiring of some exotic parts on the main board are simply too high.

With best regards, your Jomox-Team"

"Vocals and breathing were captured by a lav mic connected through the KO-Pro. Vocals and Moog Voyager processed through Ableton Live. Keys were played through Ableton Live with Lounge Lizard 3. Bass is from the KO-Pro. Voyager comes in at 3:55. Beats were done with a Puremagnetik kit in Ableton."

iPad TAPE MULTITRACK APP? Yes! - Tascam PORTASTUDIO virtual cassette

"TAPE IS BACK! In virtual form..."

I've been on the fence posting the Portastudio as this site is synths only, but... This video features the Yamaha Tenori-On, so there you go. The Tascam Portastudio iPad app is a project by Chris Randall of Analogue Industries. He also runs Audio Damage. As always it's interesting to see what the makers do.

ARP SOLOIST

via this auction
"extraordinary Mid-70's vintage analog VCO/VCF/VCA synthesizer under digital control is an unusually expressive instrument as it features immediately accessible, simultaneously-available aftertouch or "Touch Sensor" (aka presssure sensitity) MULTIPLE parameters.

This is the later, more stable version of the ARP PRO SOLOIST. It features more reliable, faster switches for voicing and an XLR output in addition to phone jack output. It also has a PORTAMENTO (or GLIDE) jack, and a footswitch (included) for use in that jack.

EXPRESSIVENESS! TOUCH / AFTERTOUCH / PRESSURE EFFECTS! Sure, others have Pitch Bend, but here you have, at the flick of a single switch which is ideal for performance (thus the PRO moniker): "WOW" (res filter opening/closing), "GROWL" ( SECOND LFO LF Mod), BRILLANCE, VOLUME, and of course, VIBRATO.

OVERALL TOUCH SENSITIVITY immediately accessible. GLIDE / GLISSANDO / PORTAMENTO also immediately available via included AUTHENTIC ORIGINAL ARP FOOTSWITCH, with immediately available GLIDE SPEED Control too! REPEAT effect, with it's own LFO also available, instantly.

The ANALOG VCO/VCF/VCA voices are further enhanced with digitally-routing control through thoughtful fixed format resonant filter banks, and a HP filter, so there are actually SEVERAL seried filters. The sounds are primarily LEAD sounds, as this is a solo, monophonic instrument. Add a little chorusing or delay effect externally for even richer "phatt" sounds.

THREE Octave manual uses easily accessible simple contacts for easy user maintenance.

INCLUDED: FULL ARP SERVICE MANUAL, ARP PORTAMENTO FOOTSWITCH

The design is particularly ripe for modification, and bringing out some of the analog controls over the VCO/VCF/VCA, such as variable AD envelope control, etc. We've chosen to keep the design and circuitry intact per collector's usual preference. If you are interested in having this already-incredible Lead Synthesizer tricked out (modified) by us, please inquire, OR we can assist you in doing yourself, but be forewarned, mid-70's circuits have their own peculiar idiosyncracies and exotic parts requirements for compatibility.

HERE are two photos showing all the voices. I believe the RED voices are based on pulse and/or square waves with even harmonic content in varying ratios and the GREEN are based on sawtooth or highly filtered (sine or triangle wave-like haunting sounds).

Remember, this is a LEAD INSTRUMENT - monophonic, no chords. All the power is packed in AVAILABLE EXPRESSIVENESS. Take some time to learn the extensive expressiveness parameters available on this amazing synth and you will create incredibly organic, heartfelt, powerful sounds."
