"Size doesn't always matter, despite its compact dimensions, the Nanozwerg is a full-featured monophonic analogue synthesizer. With VCO, an additional sub-oscillator and its 12 dB-slope-multimodefilter, the Nanozwerg offers multiple bass- and lead-sounds. In addition, the Nanozwerg offers a noise-generator and also works as an effects-processor using its external audio-input.

The analogue VCO generates 4 waveform shapes: triangle, saw tooth, rectangle and needle-impulse. The base pitch can be switched over a 4-octave-range, while fine-tune can be specified within a range of one octave. The sub-oscillator with 2 mixable octave settings completes the Nanozwerg's sound foundation. The noise generator can alternatively replace the sub-oscillator to create non-harmonic sounds. Finally, a glide-control can be used to tie notes with portamento.

The state-variable multimode-filter runs with 12 dB slope per octave and offers Lo-, Hi- and Bandpass-modes as well as notch-filtering and resonance up to self-oscillation. Cutoff can be modulated manually, by LFO and by the ADSR-envelope simultaneously. In addition, pitch-dependent cutoff-frequency can be achieved using the key follow function. Finally, LFO modulation can be replaced by the VCO output signal.

The LFO offers 4 waveform shapes including sample & hold as well as a one-shot-function, where the selected waveform is played only once after a gate-trigger, thus imitating a simple envelope. Besides the cutoff-frequency, the LFO can also modulate the pitch or the VCO rectangle's pulse width.

The ADSR-envelope allows modulation of the filter's cutoff-frequency and the VCA-output, with positive or negative excursion. Selectively, the VCA can also be opened by a gate-trigger to free the envelope for exclusive filter use.

For integration into a modular system or use with an analogue sequencer, NANOZWERG offers several control inputs. There is CV/Gate for pitch control and note length as well as CV-inputs for cutoff-control, the VCA and LFO speed. The LFO also offers CV-output.

The audio-input allows signals to be fed into the VCF and VCA. NANOZWERG can be controlled by MIDI from any compatible keyboard or DAW. Note commands are received as well as pitch-wheel (+/- 2 semitones) and modulation-wheel data, the latter controlling the filter's cutoff frequency."

I Dream of Wires showcase MUTEK Montreal

via Jason, aka Solvent of IDOW:

"I Dream of Wires showcase
MUTEK Montreal, 13th Edition
Saturday June 2, 2012

I'm very excited to announce that we will be presenting an I Dream of Wires showcase at this year's edition of MUTEK Montreal. For those who don't know, MUTEK is the most prestigious electronic music festival in North America, now in it's 13th year.

I worked with MUTEK to curate this event. All of the artists will be incorporating modular synthesizers into their performances, and the event will be filmed for inclusion in the documentary. The line-up:

Clark (Warp Records, UK)

Container (Spectrum Spools, USA)

Keith Fullerton Whitman (Kranky/Editions Mego, USA)

Sealey/Greenspan/Lanza (Orphx/Junior Boys, Canada)
J.S. Bach two part inventions, for modular synthesizers.

The showcase will be held at the amazing new Satosphere venue, a planetarium-style dome. We will be projecting visuals from the film throughout the performances, for a truly immersive modular experience:

From MUTEK's website:

"American composer KEITH FULLERTON WHITMAN [is] considered by many to be one of his generation’s most critically acclaimed disciples of electronic music’s avant-garde classical roots.... Whitman will be joining Toronto synth-electro veteran SOLVENT (Jason Amm), who returns to the festival after a decade’s absence. Amm will be leading a showcase that includes Whitman, UK Warp act CLARK, American indie-techno producer CONTAINER, and more, to take place at Montreal’s new Satosphere, a truly original planetarium-style dome for digital-arts performance. This showcase will be filmed for the upcoming feature-length documentary “I Dream of Wires”, which explores the resurgence of the modular synthesizer. In the month of May, MUTEK TV will be featuring exclusive weekly excerpts from the film."

Hope to see some of you there... for the rest of you, we will be sure to post extended from the showcase on our Vimeo channel!

KiNo kickstarter Campaign Featuring TONTO & Pink Floyd's Jeff Blenkinsopp

KiNo kickstarter campaign for Development New Suitcase Analogue Processing Block

on Kickstarter

"KiNo wants to maximise his musical output as a solo artist.

He wants to perform and record a series of singles on what would be the suitcase version of the original KiNo Live Rig*: a custom, one of a kind analogue sound processing device built by Pink Floyd insider, sonic wizard Jeff Blenkinsopp.

KiNo’s sound and craft has been produced independently for the past 6 years by Blenkinsopp.

The funds generated here will be used for the evolution and construction of this unique sound system. Also, it will send KiNo to studio and set up a tour itinerary.

The current state of the project: Jeff Blenkinsopp has developed the road map for the suitcase rack unit. To create this equipment, we need your help!

KiNo will embark on the recording process when the machines are completed. He will collaborate with Andy Rourke. The music will be produced by Jeff Blenkinsopp.

Additional Details on New Waldorf/Tempo-Rubatu iPad Synth

You might remember the announcement back on March 27. It looks like the press release is now up on the official Waldorf site, however, discchord wrote in to let me know he has some exclusive details from Tempo-Rubato's developer Rolf Wöhrmann.

"The primary concept behind the synth is an evolution of the design in Waldorf's PPG series synths. These wavetable synths used a set of tables, which included various waveshapes. Think of Animoog's timbres, but you've got a bunch together in a table. I mean a whole hell of a lot. The PPG Wave 2 had 30 Wavetables with 64 waves per table. Once a table is selected you can then pick out an individual wave from the table, and use that as something like a second oscillator.

In the as-yet-unnamed synth from Waldorf-Tempo Rubatos, you start off with the same idea... and then double it! As you can see from the screenshot, the Wave 1 and Wave 2 are both working on this principal, but with their own waves and wavesets! As with more typical synthesis, the "oscillators" can be pitched differently for wider sounds. Things get even more robust when you can tweak the spectrum of each, as well as add noise individually. Every control is doubled, so even key-tracking can be independent..."

You can find the rest on dischord's site here.
