Thor is a comprehensive synth app for the iPad. Designed for mobile music making, it features a responsive interface optimized for hands on control, an innovative keyboard and the same massive synthesis engine as its desktop cousin. It's the same semi-modular synth with the same set of selectable oscillator and filter types and the same advanced routing of audio and modulation.

Aside from a regular piano style keyboard, Thor features a keyboard that can be locked to specific keys and scales, making it impossible to hit a wrong note. This is particularly useful on a mobile device when playing directly on the screen. More than just helping the player to stay in key, this musically aware keyboard is a source of endless inspiration and experimentation."

"The app is divided into three main screens: Keyboard, Knobs and Routing.

Keyboard mode features:
• Piano keyboard with transpose and range control
• Modulation and pitch bend controls
• Assist function lets you select key and scale to highlight chord notes or to collapse the keyboard to only show the chord notes of the selected scale.
• Strum function lets you play arpeggios by holding a chord while strumming across the strum control.
• Two assignable knobs and buttons acts like performance controls
• Settings for polyphony and portamento

Knobs mode features:
• Access to all of Thor's synthesis features

• Delay and Chorus
• The Knobs screen is divided into panels that expand and collapse at the touch of a button
• Miniature keyboard to audition your sounds as you are working on them

Routing features
• Comprehensive but easy to use routing matrix lets you create complex modulation and signal flow setups
• Step sequencer with 16-steps and six channels: Note, Velocity, Gate length, Step duration, Curve 1, Curve 2

Make Noise Records: Shared System Surachai Preview

To stop and start the video click anywhere on the screen. To hear audio click on the speaker icon on the top left. It's a five second video loop that will play until you either scroll down or manually stop it.

I haven't jumped on the Vine bandwagon yet for posts as five seconds isn't much, but I thought this one deserved a post. It's an interesting part of synth history as it is part of the Make Noise Records Shared System releases and a preview of Surachai's (of TRASH_AUDIO) upcoming release on the system. It is also kind of cool to see the routing of the patch scroll by. This is the first post with a Vine embed so there's that as well. :)

If you are not familiar with the Make Noise Shared System releases, see the label below. Note the label captures the Make Noise Records Shared System posts. For the Make Noise Shared system eurorack modular as well search for Make Noise Shared System in the blogger search box on the top left of the site.

Steady State Fate PROPAGATE is Now in Production!

"Propagate is a quad gate delay with independent and voltage controllable delay and gate output durations. Each delay output is normaled to the input below. Cascading stages allow for the creation of mini trills and sequences without the restrictions of quantized divisions. In addition to the four stage outputs, a master SUM output is provided to combine all the delay outputs into one sequential output. A MIX input is also provided for combining external gates/clocks with the sequential SUM output. The unit can be globally enabled/disabled via gate signals as well.

Each stage has provisions for CV control over delay time and gate length. Additionally, MASTER DELAY and SPACE CV inputs are provided for controlling all four stages at the same time from a single source and patch cable.

Two delay modes and independently available for each stage:

LO DELAYs are approximately 20ms - 8s, SPACE (Gate Length) times are up to approximately 3s

HI DELAYs are approximately 200uS - 0.1s, SPACE time is roughly the same as the delay. This timing is in the audio range of ~10Hz - 5kHz!

Other features include a manual trigger tied to the first input and LED indication on all output stages.

If all that isn't enough, the Propagate is infinitely expandable as a master or slave unit. That means you can cascade an indefinite number of Propagate modules to create huge sequences and delays! The last output and SUM stages of each module is connected to the following module's first input stage and the SUM output via an expansion ribbon cable.

Expect to see Propagate at your favorite store in about 6-8 weeks!"

The Birotron B90 - Video

Uploaded on Jul 1, 2010 tapediskmagic·2 videos

"The rarest manufactured instrument - the extinct and impossible to find Birotron playing worn out mixed tapes of string section, brass, violas, choir, and flutes across the keyboard.
The musician is Chris Dale who very kindly let me do the video.
So what did this instrument sound like with a decent set of unworn tapes???? That is a mystery.....Sadly we may never know."

The is the first and only Birotron post unless you count this flickr pic.

Update via synthlab in the comments:

"If you want to know how the Birotron sounds with unworn tapes, just listen to ' Tormato' by Yes.
Rick Wakeman, who commissioned the Birotron, uses
it all over the album. You won't be able to hear it in isolationn though.... "
