Roland SYSTEM-1 Plug-In/Out Synthesizer - Part 1

Published on Nov 10, 2015 Synth Anatomy

"This the first part of the sound review of the Roland SYSTEM-1 Plugin Synthesizer. You hear correctly, a software plug-in Synthesizer based on the hardware Synthesizer SYSTEM-1. The plug-in version of SYSTEM-1 offers you the same technology and sound possibilities as the Plug-Out Synthesizer.

For this tests, I connected my SYSTEM-1 Plug-out Synthesizer in my DAW to get an USB Controller for this plug-in.

The impressions from this Part 1 is a bit special. Optical, the SYSTEM-1 Hardware and Software Synthesizer are not the beautiful products on the market and they polarize a lot the market. Some people doesn't love the look other one absolutely. Also the keyboard feeling on the SYSTEM-1 Hardware isn't good.

On the other, you get an great sounding product with a lot of sound possibilities, many waveforms and other great features like cross-modulation. Also the usability is great with many knobs.

I must say that the SYSTEM-1 is a great sounding "green product", with a big plus for usability but with some optical minus points.

I hope to test for you also all other Roland plug-out/in Synthesizer available on the market.

More about the SYSTEM-1 Hardware/Software Synthesizer, you can find here: http://www.roland.com/products/system-1/"

"70's italian monophonic analog synthesizer with diode ladder filter, same type as in VCS3... phatty and gritty !
Originally intended for guitar, modified here with CV and gate in.
The scratching noise you hear from time to time is due to low end distortion in my camera.
Particle delay and spring reverb added."

Pro 2 + Voyager + MicroBrute + H9 + Animoog + Borderlands

Published on Nov 9, 2015 experimentalsynth

"I was having such a great time playing around with the setup shown in this video that I decided to record it, if for no other reason than to document it for myself. The Dave Smith Instruments Pro 2 is at the heart of this system, creating an ambient bell-ish arpeggio, and also syncing all the tempos through MIDI and clock-synced LFO Control Voltages. Because of this all the filter modulations, arpeggios and echoes are easily synced to the master clock.

The Moog Voyager/H9 combination proved nicely lush and the MicroBrute’s healthy CV capabilities (for a synth its size and price) made a lot of fun things possible.

Even when the Pro 2 is just arpeggiating, its dual position and pressure sensitive ribbons make it easy to tweak sounds. The Animmoog and Borderlands apps were handy for filling in a few textural cracks.

Animodule M1xXOR Details

We saw the videos and teaser pic. We now have full details in via Animodule:

"Born in the Bowels of the Darkest Depths of the Darkest Realms of Darkest Darkness;
The M1xXOR is the Bastard Progeny of an Unholy Union between the V9a, VCSS, XXX_OR, and MixMan.
This Bestial Abomination will Command your Devotion and Fulfill your Deepest, Darkest Desires for Rhythmic and Harmonic Domination and Devastation!

How It Works:
-Signal goes in to Channel Input (it's DC connected so you can use Audio OR CV).
-Signal is attenuated via Channel Attenuator.
-Signal is allowed to pass through to Individual Channel Output AND Mixer Output IF Gate Input is High OR Switch is depressed.

Sequencer:
-Clock Pulse High in to Clock Input Moves Sequence forward 1 Step.
-The Channel that the step is On will be open*
-CV can be used to control the Sequencer via the CV Input.
-There is a resolution of 5 steps (4 channels and a 0 step allowing for all channels to be cleared from the Sequencer).
-There is an attenuator and offset to help properly scale and position your CV Input.
-CV Input is expecting 0V to +5V, but with the Attenuator and Offset will easily work with -/+5V.
-Clock and CV maybe used in tandem resulting in some mind melting rhythms!
-In that case the Clock will step forward 1 step from it's current position (unless it's on step 4 in which case it will roll over to step 1)
-The Clock used in conjunction with the CV will bitshift the sequence to the left, incrementing the static position of the step counter by 1 (wrapping around to step 1 after step 4).
-Fer' Instance, 2 Clock counts and CV is on 0. Step will be on Channel 2
-Gate High in to Reset will reset Clock counter to step 1 OR if Clock Input is being used in conjunction with the CV Input the reset will clear the Clock Counter and return the step to where the CV indicates it should be without any BitShifting

*Gate Input / Switches in conjunction with Sequencer:
-The Sequencer and the Gate Input / Switches combine in a XOR gate. If one is High and the other is not, that channel will be open. If BOTH are High, that channel will be closed.

Despite the lengthy description, the M1xXOR is very intuitive (and unbelievably Fun!) to use.
Each Channel (and the Mixer) May be used independently of the Sequencer.
So if you're not in the mood for Rhythmic Insanity You still have a gateable 4 Channel DC-Coupled Mixer AND/OR 4 independent and gateable channels of Attenuation.
You will NEVER just have it filling space in your cabinet.
You will find a use for it in EVERY patch!

All this in 8HP with a depth of 33mm (from rear of Front Panel).

The M1xXOR is the Dark Lord of Rhythmic Obliteration Temporally Transmogrified to this Earthly Plane!
Better Get One (at least!) today before your music is DOOMED to Blandness and Pusillanimity!"
