Ambient Modular :: Faraway :: Plaits, Tides, Rings, Clouds, Peaks

Published on Apr 7, 2018 Mike Thomas

"Just a wandering/ambient exploration of some tones from Mutable Instruments new module: Plaits.

Thought I'd try using rotorvideos.com to produce the video for the piece. Pretty cool, but not sure whether I'll use it again.

Patch Notes
==========
Tune is in pentatonic major, set on O_C.

Leading bass tone that becomes weaving bass line is Tides sequenced by O_C with the v/oct sent through Intellijel 1U clock/random/slew. Tides Smooth shaped by the same v/oct signal (attenuated), and Shape by a slow LFO from Peaks.

"Ethereal flute" sound is Clouds in granular mode, playing back a sample of Plaits recorded from this patch. Reverb turned up high, and Position slowly modulated by Peaks. Clouds Frequency manually moved up and down an octave as the piece progresses.

'Plucking percussive mandolin' is Rings sequenced by O_C and "strummed" by Pamela's Workout. Volume modulated by Peaks and Veils.

Main voice is Plaits in Granular Formant Oscillator mode. Main output to 2hp Delay. Aux output to Ripples, with final level controlled by a channel of Peaks. Plaits Level, Timbre and Morph voltage controlled by WMD Mini-Slew in triggered/envelope mode and Harmonic by the v/oct that controls the bass line. Plenty of manual wiggling of these controls as well. Mini-Slew very lightly FM'd by a channel of Peaks, and also manually wiggled to control the envelope in certain sections.

Bass percussion is a TipTop ONE sample.

There's more VC going on here than I've mentioned. In this small-ish 'Mostly Mutable' case I have to mult and/or attenuate my control voltages in order to have enough modulation, so I end up re-using sequence VC as well as using LFOs and random to wiggle various aspects of the patch.

Sounds and submixes all routed to Intellijel Mixup, which sends stereo to 2hp Verb and on to Intellijel uJack module. Thus, in this case 2hp Verb is the final effect. It holds up pretty well, I think. You just have to be careful not to overdrive it, or it will distort.

Piece produced entirely 'in the case'. Recorded direct to digital on a Sony PCMD50 with no effects added."

"Purchased in 1986, single owner, studio use only, very good condition, however, the polyphonic aftertouch feature no longer seems to work. Includes two additional memory cartridges and owner's manual. Very likely all of the batteries used to back up the memory will need to be replaced soon. Shipped in original box with identifying marks covered."

The AT probably does work, you just have to stand on it. The AT in this era of Rolands are notorious for being extremely difficult to coerce out of them. I'm guessing they weren't so when new? It is interesting. I've recently played a CS60 with amazingly subtle and expressive aftertouch and the 60 came out in 1977. The JX-10 was released in 1986.

Mutable Instruments - Marbles (random sampler) *In Depth Eurorack Demo Tutorial*

Published on Apr 7, 2018 DivKidVideo

"****PLEASE NOTE*** lots of the sections below make use of various other features on the module. Some contain feedback patching using random voltages to influence rhythms or clock jitter etc. But the timings will guide you through what’s in focus for each patch at any given time. Skip around to your hearts content, or grab good drink get your feet up and set an hour aside to watch the full thing. This will also serve as a semi-tutorial for random functions you’ll find in other modules so it’s well worth watching (if I do say so myself) to get the most out of other random sources too. Cheers! :)

"Using the Mutable Instruments Peaks eurorack module as rhythm generator in my Eurorack setup. I have created a 4-voice jam with two Rings modules and use the MI Peaks functions kick and snare to have a solid eurorack drum base.
Mutable Instruments Peaks is an LFO, ADSR envelope generator, Tap tempo LFO, drum synth, mini sequencer, trigger delay and trigger randomizer. It's a swiss army knife module that is very versatile."

microKorg, Volca Keys and Bass Live Jam - Omniform by Laser Pig

Published on Apr 7, 2018 ChrisLody

"Been a while, but here's a nice live version of Ominform that I've been practising for an upcoming live gig.

I'm using Renoise as a sequencer and sampler here with a microKorg, Volca Keys and Bass sequenced through a midi thru box. The Nano Kontrol is used to tweak sounds and trigger patterns. Out of shot is an Alesis MultiMix 16 firewire recording the audio and a Zoom 1201 providing the reverb."
