Tangerine Dream - Raum

video upload by Tangerine Dream

Synth spotting with Tangerine Dream.

"'Raum' is the Single Edit release taken from the upcoming Tangerine Dream EP 'Probe 6-8'.
Out 26th November 2021 on Kscope/Eastgate Music. Pre-order Vinyl, CD, Digital: https://TangerineDreamKscope.lnk.to/P...

The music video to 'Raum' was shot on a Canon Super-8 camera during late 2020 and early 2021. It portrays the band’s creation process at their Berlin studio space and the surrounding neighborhood of Neukölln. The choice of shooting on film was also an homage to Edgar Froese’s Super-8 videos, filmed while being on tour or in the studio with Tangerine Dream.

Tallinn Music Week 2021 Opening Night: Themes For Great Cities Tallinn live premiere

"Premiere of 'Themes For Great Cities: Tallinn' at Tallinn Music Week 2021 Opening Concert

In cooperation with Telia Estonia

Tallinn Creative Hub, 30 September 2021

Performed by:
Alex Maiolo
Jonas Kaarnamets
Erki Pärnoja
Jonas Bjerre"

I'm proud to say Alex Maiolo is actually a supporting member of the site. The following is some additional info he sent in:

"I just got back from Tallinn Music Week. This year I went as a performer. I pitched a concept to Helen Sildna, the director, called Themes For Great Cities, and she liked it.

I asked two Estonian artists, Erki Pärnoja, and Jonas Kaarnamets, and also Jonas Bjerre of Mew. They all said yes.

The idea was to take sounds from the city and use them not only in a concrète way, but also more behind the scenes, as instruction for pitch, tempo, and rhythm. All without the aid of computers. It was a modular project. The computer was just used for playback for the most part. A tape machine.

Originally it was supposed to be held in a beautiful old shipper's guild hall. About 250 capacity. It was moved to the opening ceremony - 750 people in Kultuurikatel. The President of Estonia was there. I admire her greatly. Not a lot of people know this, but Estonia has the most women in government of any nation. it's almost 50/50 with men but not quite.

There were some speeches and the premier of a string quartet piece. Then us.

I think we achieved our goal of making these sounds into music. You'll hear the sounds we 'harvested' from the tram, train station, tunnels, streets, cafes, the old Soviet era market, and parks, just to name a few. There are also light readings from parks and the harbor that I converted into pitch/notes that aren't so apparent. Jonas took a 10 second recording of the Russian Orthodox choir and stretched it to three minutes. The whole thing is a song cycle that somewhat follows the arc of a day. We wrote it in 10 days."

Note the video above only covers the performance. For Alex Maiolo's introduction see this video on Facebook starting one hour in.

STG Soundlabs Radiophonic Four - eurorack modular synthesizer (prototype)

"Here's the first Radiophonic Four, a 3x60HP eurorack format modular synthesiser with a laser-cut, hand-laminated, gunstock finish walnut frame. This system has four oscillators, three envelope generators, three waveshapers (more if you count the mixers and sample hold!), two filters, and plenty of utility modules. If you are confused by anything in the system, feel free to go to the "Racks" section of Modulargrid Dot Net and do a search for "Radiophonic Four" and you'll see details for each module in this instrument.

I built this as an attempt at a comprehensive voice. It's beautiful but there are things i will do different in the next one, so I am calling this "the prototype." It will be the only one built exactly this way.

A note about the wood finish: this has five coats of pure tung oil and that's it. No varnish or polyurethane, so if you scratch it, just rub a bit of oil into it and it's fine. Power supply is obviously included but not pictured, as are 10-32 knob screws for the legs in case you want to break it down and set it up quickly for a gig."

Quick Tips : Spooky Synthesizer Sounds!

video upload by

"We take a quick look at making two spoOo0ky sounds for the Halloween season.

The first, a growling bass, uses a stereo oscillator's unique stereo field to create evolving and animated filter movements and behavior.

The second, a classic Theremin sound, uses slight vibrato and reverb to create a warbled and eerie sound!

What other iconic spooky sounds would you like to hear this October? let us know in the comments below!
