Introducing the Sequential Trigon-6 - The Last Synth Worked on by Dave Smith

video upload by Sequential

Update: Soundcloud demos added below.

"The Trigon-6 is Sequential’s take on the classic, thick and creamy, 3-oscillator-plus-ladder-filter analog sound that defined the dawn of the synth era. It’s a sound that bridges genres and styles — now refined and redefined with Sequential’s own modern imprint. The Trigon-6 shares the same critically acclaimed knob-per-function panel design and form factor as Sequential’s Prophet-6 and OB-6 — forming a true power trio of modern workhorses for studio and stage.

Sequential Trigon-6: A First Look at Dave Smith's Last Synth

video upload by Reverb

"The Trigon-6 delivers a Moog-style "3-oscillators-through-a ladder-filter" punch, a rare style from Sequential, and one that sets the Trigon-6 apart from the rest of the 6 series."

Sequential Introduces Trigon-6 Analog Poly Synth, Featuring 3 VCO-plus- Ladder Filter Sound Engine

New Instrument Boasts Bold, Timeless Sound and Popular Prophet-6/OB-6 Form Factor

San Francisco, CA – November 17, 2022 – Sequential LLC today announced the Trigon-6, a new, 6-voice analog synth that features the company’s unique take on classic 3-VCO-plus-ladder-filter tone in a modern polyphonic instrument. The Trigon-6 was designed by the Sequential team and was the last design that Dave Smith contributed to. “Dave Smith was very excited about the Trigon-6 and we believe it continues his legacy as a synth creator,” said Sequential CEO David Gibbons.

The Trigon-6 features three newly-designed, discrete voltage-controlled oscillators per voice, with simultaneously selectable waveshapes (triangle, sawtooth, reverse sawtooth, and variable-width pulse). The 2- and 4-pole ladder filter design with feedback and drive puts Sequential’s own stamp on the classic transistor ladder filter sound that has proven its appeal since the dawn of the synth era. Analog voltage-controlled amplifiers complete the analog signal path.

“Our new VCOs and filters give the Trigon-6 a tremendous amount of warmth and presence,” said CEO David Gibbons. “The classic, big, punchy analog ladder filter tone is all here — but with some unique enhancements of our own. The addition of drive and feedback allow for a wider palette of sounds than is typical, while still retaining the ability to dial back the aggression to achieve sweet, creamy tones just as easily.”

The Trigon-6 takes inspiration from its acclaimed stablemates, the Prophet-6 and OB-6, borrowing their form factor and easy-to-navigate knob-per-fuction panel design. Also present is the much-loved Poly Mod section, also with enhancements. Modulation sources are filter envelope and oscillator 3 (both with bi-polar control). Destinations include oscillator 1, 2, and 3 frequency, oscillator 1, 2, and 3 pulse width, low-pass filter cutoff, and feedback. Another welcome reprise is Unison mode, which features configurable voice count (1-6 voices) and key modes.

The knob-per-function front panel is free of menu-diving, offering immediate access to virtually all parameters. Toggling off the Preset switch enables live panel mode, in which the sound of the instrument switches to the current settings of its knobs and switches. “We wanted to make the Trigon-6 as fast and easy to navigate as possible,” said Senior Product Designer Andrew McGowan. “Switch off Preset and what you see is what you hear.”

A dual effects section provides studio-quality reverbs, delays (including modeled digital and analog types), chorus, flanger, phase shifter, and ring modulation. While the effects themselves are digital, with 24-bit, 48 kHz resolution, a true bypass maintains a full analog signal path. An independent stereo distortion is also provided and is 100% analog.

Additionally, the Trigon-6 features a multimode arpeggiator and a polyphonic step sequencer with up to 64 steps (and up to 6 notes per step) plus rests. It allows polyphonic keyboard input and can sync to external MIDI clock.

The full-size, four-octave, premium, Fatar semi-weighted keyboard is velocity and aftertouch sensitive. “We made size a primary concern on the Trigon-6. We think it’s an ideal mix of portability and power,” said CEO David Gibbons. “Best of all, it sounds amazing. Musicians are going to love it.”

The Trigon-6 is available now with a US MAP of $3,499. Price and specifications subject to change.

Moog Minimoog Model D Back In Production

video upload by Moog Music Inc

Update: Factory build video added further below.

"In collaboration with Moog Music, the Will Gregory Moog Ensemble presents “Archimedes Screw,” a live performance from 11 musicians—with each of the 10 keyboardists using their own Model D to add layers of sound to the composition as it builds.

From the onset of the video, the stage is set: a mix of vintage and modern Minimoogs line the chancel of The Mount Without, a historic chapel in Bristol, UK. The acoustics of the space provide a warm depth to the sound of Minimoogs produced from every era they have been manufactured.

Utilizing MIDI integration for the 2016 and 2022 reissues, and MIDI-to-CV converters for the vintage units involved in this performance, the Moog Ensemble highlights the modern features alongside the classic sound. According to the group’s musical director and composer, Will Gregory, the instrument’s enhancements expand Model D’s realm of sonic possibility.
'The MIDI aspect of these instruments enables us to open polyrhythmic possibilities between the 10 parts that would be beyond humans to reproduce otherwise. Our hands become free for sound sculpting as we perform by manipulating the filter, resonance, modulation, and envelope controls in pairs. Both these aspects are very important to how I see the Moog Ensemble breaking new ground in live performance and simultaneously giving a more expressive and warm creation.'

'Archimedes Screw' demonstrates Model D’s timeless sound, playability, and relevance as a powerful musical tool for live performance. The Moog Ensemble manifesto, Gregory shares, is very much about live performance as a living breathing unit of musicians listening and responding together.

Will Gregory discusses his connection with the instrument and shares more details on how the ensemble composed this piece from a technical perspective on Moog’s website (moogmusic.com).

Goldfrapp’s Will Gregory is one of the UK’s leading advocates of using synthesizers and electronic instruments to create new sounds and reinvent old ones. Leading and performing with the Moog Ensemble since 2005, Gregory and its rotating contributors—which includes Adrian Utley of Portishead—perform a mixture of specially composed music, transcriptions of classical works, and their own versions of music from popular culture and film scores. “Archimedes Screw” will be featured on the debut Will Gregory Moog Ensemble album coming out via Mute Records in 2023.

"Streichfett Plugin

The String Machine as a Plug-In

The sound engine of the legendary Waldorf Streichfett hardware is now available as a plug-in for your DAW, fat sound for a very affordable price supporting all common formats (VST3, VST2, AU, AAX).

streichfett soft 400x215The clearly structured user interface offers direct access to all important sound shaping parameters. Making and playing music is the main focus here. With a few clicks, drastic sound changes are easily made and can be saved as your favourite presets.

The UI is continuously scalable. Whether you use a 5K monitor or the FHD screen of your laptop, whether viewing in full size or as a small status display – the plug-in always remains in focus.

The Streichfett takes you back to the days of the legendary String Machines. In the old days, there was no choice – to create a massive wall of sound, you simply needed a String Machine.

These keyboard instruments mastered sound layering perfectly long before the advent of polyphonic synthesizers.

It was the time when composing contemporary music had no resemblance to doing your annual tax return on a PC. It was the golden years of rock and pop, when even keyboard players simply plugged their instrument into the amp and started playing, instead of labouring over endless preset lists in search of the perfect sound.

Now there is Streichfett – and the good old days are coming back. Experience what a real String Synthesizer sounds like. Experience how a homogeneous, extremely dense, floating web of sounds can be created from a raw, basic electronic sound in just a few simple steps.

Streichfett combines the best of the previously extinct species of String Synthesizers of the 70s and early 80s. Its dual sound engine features a fully polyphonic String Section and an eight voice Solo Section, which is essential for recreating classic movie sounds from the 70s and 80s. The Ensemble Effect provides depth and movement to the String Section, while the Effects Section adds adjustable Phaser and Reverb effects. Additionally, the Animate Effect can be used to modulate the Strings Registration, allowing spectacular sound morphs.

The Solo Section offers presets named Bass, E-Piano or Clavi, and just like with a typical String Machine, the sound has little to do with that name. Instead, these are shimmering and slightly percussive sounds that blend well with the String Section. Although the User Interface is simple and easy to comprehend, it controls a rather complex sound engine which is capable of delivering rich and creamy pads unlike any other instrument."
