BRINTA – golden grain circle - granular sampler

Circle of sound – spilling the Brinta – follow the white dot – banged grain.

Samples three-and-a-half seconds of audio (one moment) cuts it into thousands of pieces. Little grains of sound. You can mix the sound grains in speed and order. You re-arrangement it.

When the red dot is running around the circle it is recording. Your sample becomes the circle. Blue for high frequency, green for mid and red for low. Colours mix accordingly and when they all come together in white-light, you have white-noise. Once your sample is recorded the white dot can run around the circle, spawning little golden heads playing your sample. The size of the grain is how long your play head exists.

I was coaching a workshop for filmsound at art-university Kassel, Germany.
One of the movies (by student Aly B. Landwehr) had crashed onside the camera while filming:
the transport mechanism failed. But the malfunction created something unexpected: strange shapes that pulsate on the screen.
Spontaneously I decided to remix the movie live at the final screening ceremony. It showed up new creative horizons of the Silhouette Synthesizer within the mutlimedial context.

Die kasseler Filmstudentin Aly B. Landwehr dreht einen 16mm-Analog-schwarz-weiß-Film. Beim Dreh hakt der Transport der Kamera aus, so daß die Frames verrutschen. Bei der Projektion werden verwischte, halbabstrakte Bilder sichtbar, in einem pulsierenden Rhythmus erscheinend und verschwindend. Im Seminar "Filmsound" der Kunsthochschule und des Instituts für Musik (beide Kassel) trifft Musiker und Erfinder Pit Przygodda (P. Zygota) Aly und ihren Film und läßt den Film als visuelles Material durch den von ihm erfundenen audio-visuellen Synthesizer "Silhouette eins" laufen und durch die "Silhouette-Synthese" zu rhytmischen Klängen transformieren.
