MB-6582 midibox sid - C64 - Enigma Force cover

X1L3

"The theme from the sequel of Shadowfire recreated with the MB6582, a Boss DR550 mk2 and some supersaws to pad it out a bit.

Staying quite faithful to the original with all the modulated PWM stuff from the MB6582.

Another shout out to Fred Gray - the composer of the original C64 version.

Cheers to:

For hosting the scans that i used here :)

A fun one to do. The tune is great, and making the little comic strip recreation of the crashed shuttle opening screen bought a smile to my face :)"

MB-6582 midibox sid - C64 - Shadowfire cover

X1L3

"Messing around with the MB6582 midibox sid (with a bit of help from a supersaw to fatten up the lead melody)...

Shadowfire. I LOVE this tune. It's got a kind of epic scifi story feel to it. True childhood escapism at the time when i was really into it. I found it quite hard to recreate, but keeping close to the 8bit version i think it ended up sounding pretty cool and quite faithful to the original.

Cheers to:
http://www.c64sets.com/index.html
For the great selection of box set art and inlays which i looked up to use in the video.

http://www.ucapps.de/midibox_sid.html
For making the fact that an MB-6582 exists a reality and something i was eventually able to build :)

Shout out to Fred Gray - the composer of the original C64 version."

MB-6582 midibox sid and the armalyte nostalgia

X1L3

"Quick demo of an MB-6582 wrapped up in a Thalamus nostalgia shabby scroller, for anyone considering building one. They can do lots of conventional and nice synth stuff, but the way they can pull off being a supercharged commodore 64 is where the magic is for me. A throw back to the days of pissing my parents off by turning the tv up full blast to listen to Hubbard and Galway tracks. Such a cool machine :)"

Elektron Sidstation mos6581 Synthesizer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"This synthesizer is fast becoming a collectors item as it was Elektron's first product, and SID chips are almost impossible to find these days. Sounds are crisp and aggressive, and really cut through the mix. Please note that this SID suffers from a known sidstation issue (according to gearslutz) and crashes every 1-2 hours of continuous use due to voltage spikes causing the RAM to freak out. This bug is non-destructive, just means you need to save your patches to a midi sysex dump often to ensure you don't lose anything, reset the RAM (in the menus) and reupload your patches. I'm getting rid of this synth because I came across 8 SID chips and am going to try to build one of the big a$% mb-6582's."

Unique Lego Cased Midibox MB-6582 SID Synthesizer w/ R2-D2s

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"This is a rare chance to get a MB6582 SID chip Synthesizer.

The MB6582 is an extraordinary DIY synthesizer based on SID chips known from the famous C64. More infos here:

The synth was assembled by me, works perfectly and is in a very good condition! It is a very unique *Lego Edition* - only one of it's kind!

Case and potentiometer knobs are made of Lego (suitable for SIDchip sound)
The display is in 'rusty-orange' and matches the orange flat-top LEDs.
This MB6582 is also expanded with a custom active mixer circuit (+/-12V supply). It has a main L/R out, volume-pot for each engine and a Stereo/Mono switch for each engine.
Single outputs are switched, i. e. if a single output is connected to a jack, the signal is not routed to the mixer (can be changed internally)
Following chips are built in at the moment:

4 SID 6582 (1x stereo engine and 2x mono engine at the moment)
3 cores (4th core included)
The MB6582 can be expanded to 4 stereo engines by adding another 4 SID chips (SID 6581 / 6582 / 8580 - beware 6581 needs different voltage set by jumpers internally). In stereo mode 2 SID chips are used for L/R channels seperately to generate more space! i.e. by controlling filter cutoff seperately for L/R channels.
This MB6582 requires a power supply which supplies +12v/+5V/-12V/GND. I built my own specific power supply around a MeanWell RPT-60/100kHz, it can operate from 90-264VAC.

Since I am not an electrician I have to ship my power supply dissassembled and buyer must reassemble it at his own risk! (it's a very easy process!)"

Midibox MB6582 V2 Wilba analog synth 8 x 6582 SID chips

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

via the seller:

"Midibox MB6582 V2 in fantastic condition. Built by me under the guidance of a much respected member of the Midibox community. This MIdibox was completed around 2011 and works reliably, 100% as intended and has been in my smoke free studio ever since and only used a handful of times.

Contains 4 x Midibox cores and runs up to 8 x SID chips (INCLUDED) to achieve 4 stereo SID pairs that can be run in unison, multitimral & Superpoly modes among others
The 8 6582A SIDs are from the original Wilba NOS group buy and are authentic 6582A ICs
Case is red anodised etched aluminium by Julian 'The Beast' UK with matching rear panel
A super quiet case fan has been installed in the rear for cooling and can be internally disconnected if needed (including the fan was a bit of a joke on Wilba's part and it's not really essential if the noise bothers you)
Control surface parts were sourced via Wilba's original group buy
All build decisions are based on the MB6582 build wiki
Flat top LED for clean faceplate look
Commodore C64 power supply to be shipped with the unit (US or Japan 110v buyers may decide to opt to not have the PSU shipped as it's quite heavy and could be sourced locally).

I am happy to ship internationally but buyer pays exact shipping charge and will be verified after close of bidding. Local inspection is always welcome. Happy bidding!

Twisted Electrons Announce TherapSid - C64 SID HARDWARE SYNTH

Twisted Electrons TherapSid Synth Demo - C64 SID SYNTH

Published on Sep 19, 2014 Twisted Electrons

"Overview: presets - lfo - step mod - ipad app"

"SID under full control
Named after a vicious dinosaur, its sound is no less aggressive.
TherapSid has evolved to create roaring noises that will cut through your mix like razor-sharp claws through a mammoth steak.
So why do you need another synth, since they already take 90% of the space in your room and your girlfriend keeps complaining about it?

Well, what sets TherapSid apart from other SID based synths is its focus on control. Instead of getting confused by lcds and damaging your eyesight trying to read tiny sub menu fonts, this instrument features no less than 35 knobs and 31 buttons to give you full power over your sound.

However, TherapSid also has it’s own iPad app allowing touchscreen control.

As with all our boutique instruments, TherapSid is lovingly handcrafted in the south of France and features a backlit front panel, walnut side-panels and comes with 100 presets to get you started. You can assign LFOs to knobs with one push of a button or sequence “snapshots” of knob positions using the flexible 16 step sequencer, enough to keep you busy until the next ice age.

TherapSid is available either with pre-installed and tested 6581 or without SID (if you already have your own).

We have a very limited stock of 6581 SIDS so don’t wait until they go extinct and order yours right now!

TherapSid is compatible with all variations of the SID chip including 6581, 8550 (6582) & Swinsid and it is simple to install your own.

The unit is configured to provide the correct voltages and the necessary filter capacitors for both generations are included.

FEATURES
-Compatible with all SIDS

-3 Oscillators, 4 waveforms per osc.

-Multimode Filter

-35 Knobs

-31 Buttons

-SID pcb isolated from main pcb (less noise)

-Switched audio input for running signals through the filter!

-100 Presets

-3 Lfos: 4 waveforms, 12 target knobs

-16 Step Modulator: sequence up to 20 knob positions, per step in a snap!
Also modulate Ring Mod, Sync and Waveform for all voices.

-Pedal Glide: enable/disable glide with the sustain pedal

-Compatible with our free iPad app (pending app store approval)

-Fully midi automated (see midi spec. chart in manual)

-Future proof: Firmware updates via sysex"

MB-6582 MIDIbox SID Synthesizer V2 8x SID chips Elby

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

This appears to be the MIDIBox SID in this video.

"This is a custom DIY synth that uses 8 SID chips for four stereo (as in “mono times two”) channels of audio. It has a great control surface with knobs and a push button routing matrix.

More information on Midibox here

'For anyone who's unaware of what the MB6582 is, it was conceived many years ago by Jason Williams (Wilba) when he unleashed on the world his 8 SID chip version of the MIDIBox SID synth. In short, it was one of the most incredible 'DIY' builds ever.'

The unit is fully functional. The 4 jacks on the bottom of the back panel are stereo out, and the top row are stereo in. There are 4 sid channels. This was built for the original owner by Elby Designs, so the build is professional."

Hardsid4u C64 SID Chip VSTi Sidstation

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated. via this auction

The Hardsid4u is a hardware device for Windows PC's that allows you to control four C64 SID chips either as a VSTi controled synthesizer or as a real sound device in your favorite C64 emulator. It offers four times the power of a sidstation at nearly a quarter the price! The following details are from from Hardsid.com
--------------------------------------------

Two CPUs and main memory
USB connection (compatible with both 2.0 & 1.1)
Isochronous USB endpoint for low-latency audio
VSTi interface with 8000Hz update rate on all SID registers (free)

Wave-in VSTi pin for routing 8000Hz signals to any registers (example: playing other VSTi's sound on the volume register)
Full automation of all VSTi parameters
Superior sound quality (..it is a HardSID!)
Support for up to four SID chips (6581/8580/6582 in any combination)
Updateable firmware over USB
Microsoft Vista compatible (drivers for Win2000/XP/Vista)
Cycle-accurate playback of your favorite SID tunes
Digitized sound + high-speed playback with low CPU utilization

Seamless playback of .sid tunes while you work on your PC by providing a huge playback buffer for non-VSTi applications
Supported by the HardSID 4U Winamp Plugin! (seeking, sub-tune handling, IR remote controlling)
-------------------------------------------
This particular unit I have installed 4 chips, that include 3 8580 and 1 6581 chip. As you can see by the pictures, these are easily user swappable and you can put your own chips in there. Sids vary wildly from revision to revision and even from chip to chip so you may want to swap some of these out for your own chips if you have a supply. The only chip that is questionable is chip 3, it runs oddly on some sids and the filter seems less usable than the other chips. The hardsid itself works fine as using a different chip in that socket shows no problems. I have recorded an audio demo of the chips below"

sammichSID Final Batch!

via MIDIbox

"There will be a final batch of 50 kits in October/November 2011 (or when I get 50 orders)."

via the midibox wiki
"sammichSID was designed to be the “no excuses” MIDIbox SID synthesizer kit - i.e. for all those people who want a MIDIbox SID but consider building it with modules too time-consuming, too newbie-unfriendly and/or too hard to design and construct a control surface, and where MB-6582 is too expensive, too daunting and/or too hard to source all the parts.

sammichSID therefore has the following design constraints/features, which support each other:

cheap
small
DIY newbie friendly
minimal control surface
single “walwart”/AC adapter supply, no C64 PSU brick!
stereo SID, optimized for 8580/6582A, 6581 optionally supported
“sandwich-style” stacked PCB design, no wires!
laser-cut 3mm acrylic case by Ponoko, customization possible
industry standard 2×20 character LCD with low-power LED backlight, customization possible
common control surface parts used, customization possible
To be available as a complete kit, including PCBs, components, case, hardware and (optionally) two 6582A SIDs!

MIDIbox SID Synthesizer V2 features

One Core module and one stereo SID module, fully integrated on one PCB with power supply.
Five “BankStick” slots, so you can store 4 banks of 128 patches, plus 128 “Ensembles” (engine and patch configurations)
Jumpers to configure the power supply, allowing a regulated 12V input to power 6581, or unregulated AC/DC input to power 8580/6582A.
Minimal control surface with three user-customizable buttons and LED matrix for maximum bling.
2×20 character LCD with support for low-power (25mA) or high-power (250mA) LED backlight.
Potential for future upgrade to MIDIbox SID Synthesizer V3 using add-on board..."

HardSID 4U

via this auction

"The ultimate real SID synthesizer. Can hold up to 4 real SID chips. Mine comes with 3 so one slot free for your choice of SID chip (6581/8580/6582). You can buy SID chips from the HardSID site for 15 EUR, probably less from eBay. Each SID can be played by its own VST front end, alowing full intergration and crazy realtime control from with your DAW (Ableton Live, Cubase etc).

Better than a Elektron SID Station for various reasons:

Full DAW intergration with VSTi control
Up to 4 real SIDs
8000Hz update rate on all SID registers (especially for the chip tunes hardcore!)

Lots more info at HardSID 4U Site

This actual HardSID was featured in our Sound on Sound Mix Rescue article where you can also hear full audio for the track plus just the HardSID tracks (Bass and Synth Riff)"

Building a SammichSID on Synth.nl

via Synth.nl. You'll find other projects documented from start to finish there as well. If you are new and/or interested in DIY, it will give you a good idea on what goes into them.
"Last week I started another new DIY project. It is a SammichSID synthesizer. Actually I will be building two of them one for my Friend Hans and one for myself. It is a bit like the MB-6582 I build before but a bit simpler. It has only 2 SID chips on board. But it will have that same fat Commodore 64 sound that brings you back to the 80's right away."
