Sequential Debuts Eight New 8Dio Sample Packs for Prophet X at NAMM

"Anaheim, CA—Jan 23, 2019— At this year’s NAMM convention, Sequential will debut eight new add-on packs from sound developer 8Dio for their flagship samples-plus-synthesis keyboard, the Prophet X. The sample packs are focused largely on vintage synthesizers and include the Minimoog Model D, Sequential Circuits T8, Oberheim OBX, ARP 2600, Juno 60, Jupiter 6, Moog Prodigy, as well as a new deep-sampled piano.

The Prophet X has garnered critical acclaim for its sonic versatility and sound design capabilities through its substantial internal library of 150 GB of sample content as well as its ability to import up to 50 GB of additional user samples and add-on content from sound developers.

All sample content can be manipulated by the Prophet X sound engine, which powers two simultaneous sample-based instruments plus two high-resolution digital oscillators, with a full complement of traditional synthesis tools, all processed through analog filters. Dual digital effects and a 64-step polyphonic sequencer round out the package. In standard performance mode, the instrument provides bi-timbral, 8-voice stereo, or 16-voice mono operation. 32-voice performance mode, allows paraphonic filter operation when using a single sampled instrument and oscillator.

'I’m excited to introduce these new Prophet X add-ons from 8dio at NAMM,” commented Dave Smith. They add an interesting vintage slant to a very modern synth. To have these classic instruments available to perform with or to manipulate with the Prophet X synthesis engine makes an already-powerful musical tool even more versatile. '

Dave will be representing Sequential at the NAMM show at Meeting Room TKAB.

The add-ons packs will be available for download from 8Dio’s website at a date to be determined after the show.

Disclamer: All musical instrument manufacturer and product names used in add-on packs by 8Dio are trademarks of their respective owners, which are in no way associated or affiliated with 8Dio or Sequential LLC."

Prophet X / XL Sample Import and Mapping App Now Available from 8Dio

8Dio’s Sample Mapping Utility for the Prophet X and XL is now available. See this previous post for a demo. The official press release from Sequential follows:

"San Francisco, CA—Dec 18, 2018—Sequential today announced that the Prophet X, the company’s flagship samples-plus-synthesis instrument, now allows users to import their own samples to create custom instruments and content. Sample import and mapping is done via an easy-to-use software application created by 8Dio, Sequential’s factory sample content provider for the Prophet X. The application is available for download as a free public Beta from 8Dio’s website.

Because the Prophet X was designed to accommodate up to 50 GB of 16-bit, 48 kHz user content, custom sample import has been a highly anticipated feature of the instrument since its introduction in June of this year. The 50 GB of user sample storage, along with the 150 GB of internal factory samples make the Prophet X the most capacious of any hardware instrument supporting sample playback available today.

Sample playback is only part of the Prophet X package, however, as the instrument’s sound engine actually powers two simultaneous sample-based instruments plus two high-resolution digital oscillators, and adds a full complement of traditional synthesis tools, all processed through analog filters. Dual digital effects and a 64-step polyphonic sequencer round out the package. In standard performance mode, the instrument provides bi-timbral, 8-voice stereo, or 16-voice mono operation. 32-voice performance mode, which is a feature of the new 2.0 OS, allows paraphonic filter operation when using a single sampled instrument and oscillator.

“Letting users import their own material was an essential part of the Prophet X design from the beginning,” commented Dave Smith. “It makes what’s already our most sonically versatile instrument truly open-ended. We can’t wait to hear where musicians take it now. Things are going to get pretty wild.”

The Prophet X ($3,999 US MAP) and Prophet XL ($4,399 US MAP) are available from Sequential’s worldwide network of dealers.

New Sequential Prophet XL Now Shipping

Announced October 23, the new Sequential Prophet XL is now shipping.

"Sequential Ships Prophet XL 76-Key Samples-Plus-Synthesis Poly Synth

Instrument Features 2.0 OS with Expanded Polyphony, New Loop, Modulation, and Effect Options

San Francisco, CA—Nov 16, 2018—Sequential today announced that the Prophet XL — a 76-key version of their flagship Prophet X samples-plus-synthesis hybrid synth — is now shipping. The instrument debuts a 2.0 version of the OS for both the Prophet XL and Prophet X that adds significant new features including 32-voice performance mode, forward/backward sample looping, new modulation destinations (Hack, Decimate, and instrument playback delay), a new Ring Mod effect, and several other enhancements.

The Prophet XL boasts the same powerful combination of high-fidelity samples from 8Dio and full synthesis capabilities that has earned its 5-octave sibling, the Prophet X, critical acclaim — but makes the concept even more compelling for studio and stage by adding a semi-weighted-action, 76-key, premium-quality Fatar keybed.

At the heart of both the Prophet XL and the Prophet X is a sound engine that powers two simultaneous 16-bit, 48kHz sample-based instruments plus two high-resolution digital oscillators with waveshape modulation — all processed through analog filters. In standard performance mode, the instrument provides bi-timbral, 8-voice stereo, or 16-voice mono operation. 32-voice performance mode, which is a feature of the new 2.0 OS, allows paraphonic filter operation when using a single sampled instrument and oscillator.

Dave Smith commented: “We designed the Prophet XL for musicians who wanted more of a good thing. By adding an extended, semi-weighted action keyboard and enabling 32-voice performance mode, we’ve made it even more satisfying to play the acoustic and electric pianos and other instruments where increased polyphony is crucial. Of course 32-voice mode is also enabled on the Prophet X with OS 2.0, so all of our users benefit.”

Sample content for the Prophet X series was created by sound developers 8Dio, known for pioneering “deep sampling.” Regarding the new instrument, 8Dio co-founder Troels Folmann said: “For us, it’s all about giving musicians the best tools to express themselves. The Prophet XL is a great enhancement of the original Prophet X concept. More keys and more voices means more room to explore and create.”

The 150 GB sample library in the Prophet XL and Prophet X includes numerous acoustic and electronic instruments as well as an extensive collection of ambient and cinematic effects. Users can shape the samples through loop manipulation, sample stretching, and the synthesizer’s many sound-sculpting functions which include 4 envelope generators, 4 LFOs, a deep modulation matrix, and other tools. The Prophet XL and Prophet X also provide 50 gigabytes of internal storage for importing additional samples. Additional sample expansion packs are available from 8Dio. Support for user-created sample content is scheduled for December, 2018.

The Prophet XL is available now with a MAP of $4,399.

Version 2.0 of the Prophet X/XL OS can be downloaded from the Support page of the Sequential website."

VIDEODROME TRIBUTE by Everett Dudgeon SEQUENTIAL PROPHET X

Published on Oct 22, 2018 EverettDudgeon138

"I haven't uploaded a video in a while as I'm currently in pre production on a short film I'll be directing in November. I've been swamped in pre-production and trust me that's a great thing. I'm very fortunate to have met a wonderful producer in Toronto here who really is helping me get things going. I'm very fortunate and blessed to be surrounded by so many supportive and wonderful people.

Howard Shore's score for Videodrome is quite a unique score. What he did was he scored and recorded a real string orchestra and then re-sampled that recording into his Synclavier synthesizer. So the whole score has synthesized string recordings and authentic string recordings which fits the films plot perfectly.

I used the Prophet-X for this and approached it in a similar way. I used the beautiful string samples from 8Dio and layered them with the same strings but altered through frequency modulation and amplitude modulation. Lots of Bit and Hack used on the strings as well as some oscillators mixed in there as well. I think it turned out very well. Hope you enjoy! Long Live The New Flesh!!!"

Dave Smith Instruments Sequential Prophet X Now Shipping

via Dave Smith Instruments

"Dave Smith Instruments Begins Shipping Sequential Prophet X Samples-Plus-Synthesis Hybrid Synthesizer

New Keyboard Features Samples by 8Dio, Stereo Analog Filters, and Full Synthesis Capabilities

San Francisco, CA—June 6, 2018—Dave Smith Instruments today began shipping the Sequential Prophet X, a new, bi-timbral, 8-voice-stereo (16-voice mono) synthesizer that combines samples and synthesis. At the heart of its sound is a newly developed engine that powers two simultaneous 16-bit, 48kHz sample-based instruments plus two high-resolution digital oscillators with waveshape modulation per voice — all processed through analog filters.

Dave Smith commented: “The Prophet X is a powerful evolution of the Prophet series. We’ve created a new sound engine that not only provides sample playback through stereo analog filters, but also gives you all of the synthesis capabilites and awesome sound you’d expect from a Prophet. It’s an amazing instrument.”

For sample content, Dave Smith turned to sound developers 8Dio, known for pioneering “deep sampling,” a detailed approach to sampling that aims to capture all of the nuances and idiosyncracies of a particular sound or instrument. 8Dio co-founder Troels Folmann put it this way: “We’re known for going anywhere and everywhere with sounds. We embrace all sounds as music and feel that if you can capture the musical soul of a sound, you can make it into an instrument. The Prophet X gives musicians a very immediate and responsive way to access this expressiveness.”

The 150 GB sample library in the Prophet X includes numerous acoustic and electronic instruments as well as an extensive collection of ambient and cinematic effects. Users can shape the samples through loop manipulation, sample stretching, and the synthesizer’s many sound-sculpting functions which include 4 envelope generators, 4 LFOs, a deep modulation matrix, and other tools. The Prophet X also provides 50 gigabytes of internal storage for importing additional samples. Several sample libraries will be available from 8Dio at launch. Support for user-created sample content is planned for December, 2018.

A dual-effects engine provides multiple reverbs, two delays (standard and BBD), a chorus, flanger, phase shifter, rotating speaker, high-pass filter, and distortion. In stacked or split voice mode, you can apply two different effects to each layer. Effects parameters can be modulated through the mod matrix as can the samples themselves. A polyphonic step sequencer allows up to 64 steps and up to 6 notes per step, per layer. The Prophet X features a premium-quality, five-octave, semi-weighted keyboard with velocity and channel aftertouch, an integrated power supply, USB support, and three OLED displays.

Dave Smith summed up the new instrument this way: “As a whole, the Prophet X covers more sonic territory than any Prophet we’ve ever created. The new analog filter design we’re using not only sounds fantastic for synth sounds, but also does something special for the samples. Composers will love it for soundtracks, synth geeks will love it for its sound mangling potential, and live players will love it for its versatility.” Added 8Dio co-founder Tawnia Knox: “The Prophet X has almost infinite posibilites. But more importantly, it has a soul. It’s alive. You can touch your sounds in a different way than you ever could.”

The Sequential Prophet X is available now with a US MAP of $3,999."

DSI CHOOSES SOUND SEMICONDUCTOR FILTER CHIP FOR PROPHET X

If you are curious what filter chip is used in Dave Smith Instruments' new Sequential Prophet X, it's the new SSI2144 from Sound Semiconductor, designed by Dave Rossum of E-Mu fame, and the new Rossum Electro-Music. The SSI2144 is a new and improved version of the SSM2044 used in many classic vintage synths. The official press release from Sound Semiconductor follows:

"DSI CHOOSES SOUND SEMICONDUCTOR FILTER CHIP FOR PROPHET X

SSI2144 Filter Perfect Complement to Sample and Synthesis Engine

June 6, 2018 – Audio IC specialist Sound Semiconductor today announced that venerable synthmaker Dave Smith Instruments selected the SSI2144 Fatkeys™ Four-Pole Voltage Controlled Filter for its groundbreaking Prophet X.

The Prophet X fuses samples and synthesis into a single keyboard for unprecedented stage and studio capability. Built around a bi-timbral stereo 8-voice DSP engine with a massive 150GB internal memory, the Prophet X provides cutting edge samples created by sound designers 8DIO. Also included are dual digital oscillators per voice with a wide range of waveforms and great flexibility on how they’re used.

Samples and waveform generation start in the digital domain but grounded in the real world through sixteen analog filters. Dave and his development team chose the newly available SSI2144 due to its classic ladder sound in an affordable and modern IC footprint.

Sound Semiconductor was founded in 2016 by original SSM staffers – many of whom carried forward the SSM vision at Analog Devices – to develop high performance ICs for professional audio and electronic music. The SSI2144 is an updated and improved re-issue of the SSM2044, which many believe to be the best-sounding filter IC ever produced. Both the SSM2044 and SSI2144 were designed by electronic music icon Dave Rossum.

The SSI2144 was quickly followed by the SSI2164, a significantly improved direct-replacement for the SSM2164 Quad VCA. More products are in development.

"SSM chips were at the core of Rev One and Two Prophet 5’s," stated Dan Parks, President of Sound Semiconductor. "So it feels great to be back in a Prophet our the new SSI2144.”

Sound Semiconductor is composed of musicians and technologists with the goal of developing affordable, high-performance integrated circuits for the electronic music and professional audio markets. For more information, please visit www.soundsemiconductor.com."
