Live Techno Series #6 [TR-909, MC-909, Virus TI2, MPC2500]

YouTube Uploaded by siedgey on Mar 30, 2011

"Thanks for checking this out!

I have just moved into a new recording studio in Glasgow and finally have a place to set up all of my equipment permanently and build the room of my dreams! In this video, I teamed up with Mr Copy and Vakama to have the first live jam in the studio - a techno monster running completely live on hardware - the computer was only used to record the session.

The setup is as follows: MC-909 is sequencing the Virus TI2 and providing MIDI clock to the Virus, MPC and TR-909. The bassline, the clicks and the pad in the breakdown is coming from the Virus (controlled by me and played using the Waldorf Blofeld keyboard via MIDI), the 909 sounds are coming live from the TR-909 through the MC-909 audio input (controlled by Vakama) and the MPC is playing the kick drum and some percussion, as well as the chopped dub vocal throughout the track (controlled by Mr Copy).

Let me know your thoughts on the session - we had a great time recording it, it only took 3 takes to get something that sounded really nice but I could've kept going all night... :]

In other news, here are a list of places I will be playing in the next couple of months. If a show is near you then come down and say hello! Or else if you would like to make a booking for a free date then please get in touch"

Monomachine and TR 909 patterns

YouTube Uploaded by Catabolicdj on Oct 15, 2011

"Borrowing a TR 909 for a bit. A few test patterns on the Elektron Monomachine and Roland TR 909. Here the Monomachine is synced to the TR 909. This TR 909 has an earlier version of the MIDI specification and does not always follow MIDI perfectly. Vice versa works fine. Switching patterns manually on both the 909 and the Mono."

Jeff Mills is widely considered to be the world’s most progressive Techno DJ and Producer. His musical journey—having originated in Detroit—has seen one instrument join him through the decades: the Roland TR-909 Rhythm Composer. His connection, and performance, with the 909 has set the standard of live electronic music performance with the critically acclaimed 'Exhibitionist 2' documentary a Techno hardware masterclass.

In celebration of September 9, a.k.a. #909DAY, Roland sat down with Jeff Mills in Paris, France to better understand how the 909 helps realise Jeff’s unique musical vision and gain some insight into his perspective of the future of electronic music.

Roland TR-909 & Elektron A4 techno

Published on Feb 24, 2013 dylannau·19 videos

"TR-909 through the Kaoss pad into the Elektron A4. Kick drum is ran seperate into A4 . Tr. 1 is the 909, Tr4 is the kick on the 909. Tr 2, 3 are A4 synth sounds. Old school kinda acid style track, nothing too awesome IMHO but had to get something with the new 909 I got. Trying to change things up with the performance knobs which are really cool, but take some time to set up. Thinking hard about NOT keeping the 909. It's cool and all, but kind of more a museum piece maybe?"

Creation Modular Systems - Red 909 & 808 Red Rack Based Modular Drum System

via @KleineMusic, via @emptyvesselnz

"Anyone know anything about this? a modular drum unit with all analogue versions of the TR909 Bass/Snare/Clap/HH and a TR808 Bass/Snare....."

Modules from left to right:

TR-909 BASS ms-9 w/ Level, Tune, Attack, and Decay knobs
TR-909 SNARE ms-9 w/ Lvel, Tune, Snap, and Tone knobs
TR-909 CLAP ms-9 w/ Level knob
TR-909 HiHAT ms-6 w/ Level, Tune, OH Decay, and CH knobs
TR-808 BASS ms-8 w/ Level, Tone, and Decay knobs
TR-808 SNARE ms-8 w/ Level, Tone, and Snappy knobs
PROFESSIONAL DRUM - SYSTEM - modular systems - blank panel
PROFESSIONAL DRUM - SYSTEM control panel with Limited logo, MAIN volume knob, ON switch, an additional knob with button, three TRIGGER LEDs w/ buttons, and a small display with an additional button.

It's interesting that the TR-909 HiHat has a ms-6 label rather than ms-9.

Note there are no patch points. It almost looks like a Clavia (Nord) prototype rack drum system. It does appear to be 3U high like eurorack. Could be a nicely done DIY system.

This appears to be the first post to feature Modular Systems on the site. If anyone knows anything about them, let us know! Thanks to @emptyvesselnz for bringing this to our attention. Whenever I think I've captured it all after 15 years of running the site, something new old pops up. See the New Old label below for more.

Update: two new pics in via @KleineMusic. You can see the brand name on back is Creation Modular Systems. You can see individual outs, main stereo outs, MIDI In, Thru, Thru-1, Thru-2, and 3 trigger outs, and AC 230 V socket on back.

Bedroom Producers Cassette 909

"BPB has released Cassette 909, a free Roland TR-909 drum machine sample library with a twist. The clean output of this legendary drum machine has been recorded to a CrO2 audio cassette, adding a layer of noise and grit to the iconic 909 drum sound. The processed samples were recorded to an audio cassette at two different gain settings, resulting in two separate kits with a different lo-fi flavor.

The library features over 150 drum samples in 24-bit WAV format. All included samples are normalised to -0.1 dB and edited carefully to avoid any pops and clicks. The included sounds are 100% royalty free.

Contents
155 drum samples in total (24-bit WAV format).

Anatomy of a Drum Machine: Roland TR-909 Emulator JOMOX 09 (HQ Sound).

Published on Sep 27, 2013 massivebeatzz·58 videos

"Test, Review, Jam - SOUND CHECK. Here's something you may want to read while watching:

Built from 1997-2005 this now legendary drum box was first reviewed in June 1997 by SOS (Sound On Sound Magazine) asking: "So what do you get when you cross '80s retro with '90s know-how?"

They wrote:
XBase 09 is serious about emulating the Roland TR-909. Like the 909, it is an analog drum machine, and it sounds just like the 909, and more! It offers the same types of analog controls that the TR-808 and TR-909 did such as tuning, level, decay, snap, etc. However it provides more of these controls for more sounds than the originals ever did and has MIDI implementation and Patch memory making the XBase 09 a much more versatile machine than those originals.

Kick and snare are true analog, not emulation and not sampled. The Hihats, cymbal, ride, rimshot, claps and noise sounds are samples but are still quite tweakable. All your edited sounds can be stored into the 100 patches of memory. Use the built-in LFOs to modulate the Bass drum pitch, Snare Tune, Snare Snap, Snare Noise Tune, HiHat Tune or LFO 2.

The XBase 09's built-in sequencer is also more advanced yet faithful to the style of its mentors. Step or Real-Time programming just like it's done on the 909 and 808! However, on the XBase, any edits to the sounds will also be stored with the pattern or song! This really liven's up your beats and allows you freedom and control to do things not easily possible on the original beat boxes! There's also an extensive Shuffle mode. Of course the XBase 09 is also happy as a simple drum tone module, with all editable controls accessible using MIDI. The controls also send MIDI data when tweaked so you can record real-time edits into your external sequencer.

The XBase09′s editable controls include...
Bass drum -- TUNE (controls the pitch envelope amount), PITCH (VCO tuning parameter), DECAY (controls the decay time), HARMONICS (changes the harmonics of the VCO using a diode limiter), PULSE (square wave impulse), NOISE (clap-like sound), ATTACK (controls how much of the PULSE and NOISE mix is added), EQ (smoothes the sound with a filter).
Snare drum -- TUNE (controls the pitch of the two oscillators), NOISE TUNE (tunes the noise filter), XSNAPP (controls the proportion of noise), DECAY (noise decay time), DETUNE (detunes the two oscillators), NOISE TUNE (tunes the noise filter).
Sample section -- OH DECAY (controls the decay time of the analog volume envelope for sample assigned to OHH), CH DECAY (same but for CHH), HH BAL (controls the volume balance between the samples assigned to OH and CH), TUNE defines the playback speed (pitch) of the sample."

The Boring TR-909 vs RD-9 Comparison Video We Didn't Need to Have!

video upload by Honeysmack

"It's the video we didn't need to have, but here it is — a very rough comparison of the TR-909 and RD-9 performing the same pattern over and over again, be warned its rather boring. This is not an attempt to go through the detailed features of each, just a quick 1:1 comparison for all those who have been asking for it. Signal path is a mono out of each drum machine into an old Mackie 8 Bus mixer, recorded dry.

These days it seems there are more 909 experts than actual 909s, with opinions divided over what is an authentic 909 sound.... boring and ahem...why does it matter, why is it a competition?! These experts tend to overlook the sequencer, that is an essential quality of any hardware drum machine! For the rest of us, the RD-9 is awesome and I think it does a great job of emulating the original TR-909 with some clever new additions, but shhhhhhh no one will ever know the difference, except for maybe you know who (they'll be easy to spot in the comments section below). 😂 🤣

Sorry for the blurred parts of the video, there were some experts that could not show their faces because they felt the shame of not actually owning a 909. Now the cat is out of the bag!! It's okay they have gone back to the safety of their screens to assert their misinformed opinion onto others. Here's wishing them well, I worry sometimes... 🙃 😘

For those experts who are angry, unsatisfied or take issue with this video, please call into your nearest Internet Cafe as you might be eligible for a refund for watching this video and please accept my insincere apology. 🤡 🤪 😜

Disclaimer: I was a beta-tester on the Behringer RD-9 and I do not work for Behringer, nor do they have any input into the making of this video.

Thanks for watching 😀

TnineR Roland TR-909 Hardware Clone in Beta

via Jef Vermeulen on The MATRIXSYNTH Lounge

"We are starting beta testing. Hopefully the sequencer gets approved by the beta test group! once approved, I'll organize a bulkorder. more info on http://www.synthage.com/"

"This is an updated version of the MB9090 blog, on how to build a TR 909 clone. In a first stage I have built the 9090, now I am finalizing a TR 909 like sequencer, the MB909, using the MidiBox core with the SeqV4 firmware as a base. When the beta version is approved by a test group, I'll than organize a bulkorder for the final version of the 909 clone sequencer."

miniMusic BeatPad driving a Voyager and 909

Update2: Moogulator put up a post on this. The funny thing is that I completely missed the irony in the shot - a mighty knob ladden Voyager being driven by a tiny pda. Too funny. Thanks Moogulator!

Update: I should note that everything in the samples is being triggered by BeatPad - I am not using the 909 sequencer. Also you can sync to BeatPad, so I could have the 909 running its own sequence, synced to BeatPad and have BeatPad sequencing another synth though the 909 via the 909 MIDI through.

I just posted about the miniMusic MixPad. That post actually came about when I was setting up this post. I was playing around with BeatPad driving a Minimoog Voyager and a Roland TR-909 and I thought I'd put up a couple of samples and a link to miniMusic. When I checked out their site I found the new software. That aside... Title link takes you to a couple of samples and shots. Note that these samples are a bit long, daft and don't fully showcase what BeatPad is capable of. I was just dinking around. BeatPad has a super intuitive UI. There is one page for your main lead and one for your drum machine (pictured above - click the shot to see the individual parts). You can mute and solo different sounds on the drum grid and you can mute either the entire lead or drum section. In the lead section you can mute notes, adjust the length of the pattern , gate time, velocity, transposition and tie notes all on the fly. It's a blast to tweak things live. There are four things I wish it had - support for driving multiple lead sequences driving different MIDI channels at the same time (basically multi-track live sequencing), the ability to sequence MIDI CC independent of notes for things like filter, resonance and other modulations, the ability to save sequences, and the ability to flip back to saved or "sanp-shot" sequences. To clarify when you edit one of the 64 sequences available, the edits remain when you close out, so in that sense they are saved, but once you edit one there is no way to go back. I beleive you are supposed to just use a new track, but when you have multiple tracks previosly saved it can be painful remembering each track. Hmm... Add a fifth item - the ability to name your sequences for saving. Regardless BeatPad is pretty amazing - there is just something super intuitive in using a stylus to control your sequences. Believe it or not, it beats the pants off of a bulky knob box. I'm still in disbelief that a Pocket PC MIDI device/cable for external sequencing has not yet hit the market.

What's up with that?

Custom Black Modded Roland TR-909

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

"You are bidding on a Roland TR-909 in mint conditon, which is probably the only one like it in the entire world!!!

This is a one owner, air conditioned only, Roland TR-909. I am selling for a friend who is out of the music business

This TR-909 was sent to Europe for a Professional Silver and Black paint job and other modifications.

The finish is virtually perfect and the unit is in mint condition.

Numerous professionally installed modifications were performed as seen in the photos. The panel graphics from Roland are duplicated for the mods so they look like they came from the factory.

The modifications are as follows;

[1] Pitch and tone variations are now available for the bass drum

[2] Snare drum filtering is now changeable

[3] Hi Hat pitch can be changed

[4] Factory reset switches that can restore the above to factory specifications and sound

[5] Control Voltage input jack to modify Snare drum pitch

[6] Control Voltage input jack to modify Bass drum pitch

[7] Snare drum filter audio input

[8] Custom Blue LED’s that glow

This unit is fully tested and comes with cord and manual

Why settle for a bland looking stock TR-909 when this one looks so damn cool and has so many extra sonic possibilities."

Using a Roland TR-909 as a MIDI Sequencer

TR-909 External Instrument Demo
Published on Apr 23, 2013 zibbybone·114 videos

"Here's a video I filmed an edited 3 years ago and never got around to uploading. In addition to programming rhythms with the 909's built-in drum sounds, you can also program rhythms on external MIDI gear. You can select any MIDI channel and program a pattern using MIDI notes 36 through 51 (the lowest C on a 61 note keyboard to D# an octave above. I start by programming a synth bass part (Roland Jupiter 6). Then, I add a simple drum pattern to it. Next, I move over to a second 909 and program a 2 bar pattern of chord stabs (Roland JD-800). I have to transpose the oscillators up a couple of octaves in order for this to work. Lastly, I program alternate drum notes on the 2nd 909 then hard pan the 2 drum machines for a stereo panning effect. During the filming, I accidently put the Sony VX-2000 into its "Demo Mode" which showcases some of the camera's built-in digital visual effects."
