"The Akai Professional MFC42 Analog Filter Module features 1 x stereo and 1 x mono filter channel which can be controlled independently, linked together or inverted. Each channel is selectable between any one of four filter types: Low pass, High pass, Band pass and Notch. The stereo channel features dual 2-pole or 4-pole filters and the mono channel has 2-pole, 4-pole or 8-pole selectable filters (maximum combination: four 2-pole filters total). Both channels have independent input trim and programmable output level controls. The mono channel has an additional Pan control.

The MFC42 offers a modulation section with multi-waveform LFO ( sawtooth, square, triangle and random ) and ADSR Envelope generator that can be used to modulate the cutoff and/or resonance of either the stereo or mono channel, with a programmable depth control. The LFO can also modulate the L/R phase of the stereo channel.

The speed of the LFO can be controlled via the Rate knob, the Tap Tempo key, and it can be synchronized to external MIDI clock. A manual Trigger button engages the envelope generator which has independent controls for attack, decay, sustain & release. Alternatively the MFC42 can have its envelope triggered via incoming MIDI notes on a specified MIDI channel or cyclically by the LFO clock.

Effects include Distortion with depth control, analog stereo Phase Shifter with speed and depth controls and Master EQ with separate Low & High controls."

Filter House Jam #3

Published on Oct 19, 2012 by snolan1990

"This isn't a masterpiece or anything but I was getting a bit bored of spending days endlessly tweaking parts of synth driven tracks so I thought I would have a go at thrashing out a Disco edit over a few hours for fun. I didn't dig deep for this sample and it's a big loop so I'll give a pat on the back to the first person who names it in the comments section (excluding YouTube member BlizardOfTheCoast who I know will know it immediately but who can have a pat on the back anyway).

For those interested in the tech side this is just TR-909 and Akai S900 making the sounds, with the Akai ASQ10 sequencing the samples and S900 drums and the internal sequencer of the TR-909 sequencing its own sounds. The Akai MFC42 is filtering and phasering the loop (with some envelope tricks clocked to the 909) and the final mix is going through a bit of heavy Alesis 3630 compression."

2012 Atomic New Year

2012AtomicNewYear from Atomic Shadow on Vimeo.

"A short improvisation featuring HP and BK sine wave generators, prepared ambient recording, ring modulators, tape echo and a dash of reverb."

And an additional note from Atomic Shadow just for us:

"Happy New Year Matrix and everyone in Matrixland!

I have finished the Full Moon album for 2011 and thought it would be nice to do a New Years piece with some of my vintage gear. This piece features a prepared recording of a machine room ambiance with live improve on the B&K and Hewlitt Packard sine wave generators. The generators are running through an Akai MFC42 filter module, Moog Ring Mod, and a Strymon tape echo pedal. The lab coat is for my friend Stephen Howell at Hollow Sun who urged me to have some standards."

Update via Atomic Shadow: "I have two albums for free download at BandCamp and you can find pictures and the latest news at the Atomic Shadow FB page."

Akai MFC42 Analogue Filter Demo

YouTube Uploaded by snolan1990 on Jun 4, 2011

"This is a brief overview of the features and functionality of the Akai MFC42 Analogue Filter Module. For this demo I have used a simple disco loop backed by some TR-909 drums and I have tried to cover all the functions of the unit while keeping the video as brief as possible. As I am sure you will have gathered by the end of this video the MFC42 has almost endless configuration possibilities to produce a huge array of filtering effects and I have only touched upon these possibilities in this video.

For those interested the Loop comes from the Akai S900 seen just below the MFC42, the drums are from a Roland TR-909 (with the exception of the hand clap which is from the TR-707 (because my 909 clap needs repairing)). Everything is sequenced with the Akai ASQ10 and the whole mix is liberally compressed by an Alesis 3630 for that '99 Montmartre sound."
