New BugBrand Drive VCA & Sequence Modules

Interesting side note: BugBrand is entering their 17th year this year, and so is MATRIXSYNTH. This verson of MATRIXSYNTH that is. The original launched in 97. That aside, the new modules:

via BugBrand

The Drive VCA combines most of the features of the Dual Amplifier module into a single space.

It can either be run in Clean (Cln) mode as a regular VCA or switched to a sweepable mix between Zener-Diode Saturation or harmonic Wave-Folding via the Type control.

Control level is a sum of the Initial (Manual) control combined with the two CV inputs – one has a depth control with polarity & mute switch, while the 2nd is full-range unattenuated.

The response can be swept from Exponential to Linear, altering how the VCA responds to control signals.

The VCA is DC-coupled with gain up to unity.

The Sequence module is a powerful sequencing & clocking module with some interestingly different functions that take it away from regular binary approaches. The core builds around a binary logic counter chip, with clocking, reset & direction input options, while on the eight output steps it offers two gate busses and a voltage output with variable Up/Down glide. The rear of the module features several expansion headers allowing it to tie ‘behind the scenes’ to other clocking modules to create an integrated sequencing system.

Have a check of the block diagram image above. Note that control inputs pass through comparators (threshold c.+1V) so can work with almost any signal.

Clocking – the onboard Clock Oscillator goes from approx 0.65Hz/40BPM up to c.140Hz (8400BPM!). The main clock source is switchable between Internal (Clock Osc) or External source, and can clock fine at audio rates (tested up to 20kHz!).

The Clock Output is switchable between Internal or Main – allowing you to send out the Clock Osc & divide it before sending it back in to the External Clocking input (thanks Palle for that suggestion!). The Main option for this switch can also be changed to output the Lengthened clock pulse via a rear header (MAIN_CLK_OUT) which is set to CLK as standard.

The Magical Sound of the Wing Pinger

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
video upload by Robin Rimbaud-Scanner

"First proper play with the Wing Pinger, an outstanding new instrument from Meng Qi. It can move from very gentle arping melodies to harsh noise in the blink of an eye. You can play the keyboard and latch the notes on each and build up layers of sound. Here I'm using it with the Bugbrand PT Delay and a little bit of reverb from the Eventide H9. Try and listen in stereo or on headphones if you can, to feel the sound move around you. More of this here: https://scanner.bandcamp.com/album/wi...

And yes, there was an earth hum issue here with noise. I'm aware of this and apologise!"

via this auction w/ original box

Note this listing is not for the same unit in the video above; it was just included in the listing as a demo of the Wing Pinger in general and hasn't been featured here before.

"The Wing Pinger is a remarkable new analog music instrument that allows you to combine melody and noise in perfect harmony. Thanks to a highly playable interface, this latest product offering from Meng Qi is actually many things all at the same time.

The Wing Pinger is designed for musicians and non-musicians alike. It’s composed of a pair of 4-pole resonant low pass filters and a network of peripheral logic circuits. The filters can be cross “pinged” and modulated, both directly and by generated step signals.

Plain and simple, this delivers an instrument capable of producing continually evolving music across the spectrum, from controlled to chaotic. The finely tuned parameter range and intuitive interface allow players to perform entirely on intuition, producing ever-changing and rich-sounding ambient, noise or meditative music with minimal or zero user interaction.

The Wing Pinger is also at home in any musical environment. For example, it can be used as a stand-alone instrument or with whatever gear you have. The unit is equipped with both MIDI and CV I/O and can ping literally anything that has an audio or trigger input and output or emits a decaying sound."

Bugbrand Chirper 2020 Red

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

Great condition, comes with original box and adaptor! Rare and out of production. Comes housed in 5FW case.

Chirper is a semi-modular arrangement of two oscillators and one filter – a simple setup which belies the rich sonic surprises contained within. It is a direct continuation of , which itself was something of a reaction to my long-evolving works – after 10+ years I was feeling the call for new pastures and, while I enjoyed their deep electronic ecosystems, the lo-fi Weevil circuitry was never suitable for voltage-controlled work. The solution was to tweak ideas I’d been using in the , slightly simplifying some circuits to bring about an instrument with enticing layout and a fine balance of limitation vs. possibility.

Have a look at the Block Diagram above to see how Chirper is put together:
– the two Voltage-Controlled Oscillators are identical, with wide range (approx 0.15Hz to 100kHz) and sweepable from Triangle to Square.
– each oscillator has a Sync input along with Internal (from the other oscillator) and External (1V/Oct) Modulation controls. Things go nutty when the oscillators cross-modulate each other!
– the Voltage-Controlled Filter, with resonance up to self-oscillation and sweepable from Low-pass to High-pass, is fed audio from the 1st Oscillator (via Drive control) and is modulated by the 2nd Oscillator and/or an External (1V/Oct) source.

Of course, there is no internal VCA, so do be prepared for drones! [complimentary modules are in the pipeline] Note also that the 1V/Oct responses of the Oscillators and Filter are only quite accurate – fine for good tracking over a few octaves – and does not feature temperature compensation. Chirper was designed more as a surprise box than a well-pitched synth, but I saw it as a bonus to add simple 1V/Oct response.

4mm banana sockets are used for all I/O other than the Main Output which is 1/4″ Mono Impedance Balanced. The Instruction Sheet has details of interfacing with banana cables."

Meng Qi Sidrolz5 (Ciat Lonbarde Sidrax + 5-rolz)

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Sidrolz5 is a beautiful one off instrument built by Meng Qi, containing a Sidrax board and 1 set of 5-rolz per Sidrax oscillator. Can be played by touching the bare nana sockets or rhythms can be set up with patching banana cables (not included).
Requires 12vdc power with positive tip (not supplied) and has stereo 1/4" out.

A little more background-
Each sidrax oscillator has a triangle oscillator output, FM in, and two glitch inputs.
The FM inputs have a cap on input to work with the 5-rolz sandrodes below each oscillator to allow for for momentary pitch movements in time with the rolz rhythms (without the caps the rolz just send the oscillators straight to lowest pitch). Some of the FM ins have had the caps bypassed so they can be sequenced via an external, more traditional step sequencing method - e.g. I was using bugbrand CTL1s but korg SQ-1s and whatever else works with appropriate cabling with 0-10v CV range).

The two right most banana sockets are master pitch and master chaos CV inputs. The two large black knobs are master volume and master chaos. The right most knob is master pitch, all other knobs are individual oscillator pitches. Each of the bare potentiometer stems in the pictures have now been capped with knobs.

Each 5-rolz column is hardwired internally to the piezo in/vca of each oscillator- so touch playing is possible, but patching rolz together can yield both repeating and non repeating patterns. No touching and no patch cables means the instrument is silent."

New BugBrand Modules In the Works

via the BugBrand newsletter:

"I'll be easing back into the modular - built stock is low at present - but soon up will be two new modules, both at 2FW:

2130 VCO - using the powerful new SSI2130 chip, this more macro oscillator offers Through-Zero Linear FM and voltage-controlled wave-morph: Triangle->Saw->Pulse

Phaser - it took quite a few prototype iterations, but finally there's a thick & rich sounding 12-stage phaser!"

Standalone CrossOver Filter in the middle.
