First session with Palmelund Ampel, Ciat-Lonbarde Sidrax & Ciat-Lonbarde Deerhorn

video upload by NoctopolisMusic

"Just a minute of my first session with the Palmelund Ampel, a cv- and gate controller for banana synths which I think will breathe a lot of new life in my Ciat-Lonbarde setup. Just two of the modules used here, but it seems like a very musical thing. And a beauty, too! Studio beaver keeping things in order, obviously."

"Was messing around with the envelope follower on the Ciat-Lonbarde Cocoquantus 2 and thought you might be interested to hear a bit. I record a sample with acoustic guitar and loop it, then patch the envelope follower to modulate the pitch and loop speed. After recording the loop I turn down the volume on the dry signal so all you hear is the loop being modulated by me playing the guitar over it.

Ciat Lonbarde PLUMBUTTER ROTUNDA

YouTube Published on Jun 14, 2012 by petermopar

"Go to Radio Shack 2 buy banana plugs because Ciat-Lonbarde is dropping this new synth:
www.ciat-lonbarde.net/plumbutter/"

"PLUMBUTTER IS READY. IT IS FOR THE REAL HEADSs. AUXILIARY INPUTS ARE ON THE FRONT, TO INTEGRATE IT WITH ANY SORT OF SYNTHESIS/PLAYBACK RIG. THE DEERHORN MODULE PROVIDES INSTANT SPATIAL CONTROL OF ANYTHING, VIA A SPECIAL PRINTED ANTENNA ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE INSTRUMENT. THERE IS ALSO THE POSSIBILITY OF DUAL UNITS

First of all, you should know that there is a master, stereo mixer, which mixes all the drum and drama content down into a stereo feed, so you don't need an offboard mixer!

Drum and Drama simply means any kind of rhythmic pulsing plus more gestural, soft, or emotional sounds. Thus the instrument is designed for a long performance, cinematic events, to be a major player like the great modular synthesizers of the 20th century which it gets its inspiration from: Arp, Buchla, Serge, and countless nameless inventions that used banana plugs.

The main audio producing modules are five (5), as follows:

Deerhorn, a radio instrument not unlike the theremin but much advanced, with inputs and outputs to interface with the rest of this machine.
Gongue, which takes a pulse input and responds rhythmically (at its own pace), by ringing an electronic resonance.
Ultrasound, which takes any sort of signal, and attempts a Nyquist resampling to bring out any unheard ultrasounds.
AVDog, which takes a pulse and undulates at human brain waves, thus creating a meta-resonance, which is manifested as the envelope of a synthesized electronic tone.
Snare Drum

Now, the core of the Plumbutter is actually directly unheard of through this mixer, for it is the pulse machinery that drives it..." More info here

Ciat Lonbarde Deerhorn Organ

via this auction

"The Deerhorn is a fantastic Theremin-like instrument by Peter Blasser / Ciat-Lonbarde. The Deerhorn organ is made up of three of these Deerhorns.

Each Deerhorn has an antenna, the circuit boards in the photo by the knobs and jacks, two oscillators, and two VCAs. The distance of your hand and rate of approach or leaving from the antenna control the volume of a VCA (one VCA for motion toward the antenna, another VCA for away. The VCAs then go to a stereo 3.5mm jack, which gives a stereo feel to the instrument). That control voltage is also available at the orange jack. It can be patched into the purple jacks to control the pitch. There are other jacks, and wonderful cross modulation possibilities exist.

This is the older style unit (no audio input).

I added a ground banana jack, it's on the back, near the audio output, in line with the 3rd Deerhorn's antenna. It works perfectly. I should say that I had to repair one of the tuning capacitors in one of the Deerhorns after it broke while I was calibrating it.

CIAT-LONBARDE Cocolase

via this auction
"The Ciat-Lonbarde Cocolase System dual 8 Bit Delay, a truly unique delay system not for the light of heart. I ordered this from Ciat-Lonbarde a few years ago, it's in great working order and in great shape. I know there aren't a lot of these floating around, you might say that they are extremely rare.

The Cocolase has two 8 bit digital delays, but it does not just delay sounds, it recontextualizes them in different pitches, directions, all broken up or all melded together. Each delay has sensing inputs to control its speed, direction, and location. In the center of the Cocolase is a woven nest of 8 oscillators called a Sidrassi. The Sidrassi manifests many varieties of movement with which to control the delays.

Ciat Lonbarde

Title link takes you to Ciat Lonbarde's website. Home to some truly unique and esoteric synths and more. You want wood? Here you go. Check out the knobs. Reminds me of those little sandwich wraps. Just pick one up and chow. : )

"For you, Ciat-Lonbarde will make the finest instruments to listen to spacey sounds and make space reggae. These instruments feature the sandrode philosophy, a path to intuition. You are presented with infinite possibilities arranged in the random sandrodes and the connections you make in them. You touch them softly or short them metallicly to scroll thru different sonic worlds of sound. The Fourses and Fyrall are two kits to make your own sandrode sonic worlds. "

Hmm... Space... Reggae... Pot... Sandwich wraps. Mmmm....

Joking aside... Truly beautiful design. Make sure to check out the rest. Amazing.

Tone Science Module No.2 Elements and Particles (DiN:TS02)

"Tone Science sub-label, from DiN records, continues to explore the world of modular synth music.

DiN was initially set up in 1999 by well known UK synthesist Ian Boddy to bridge the gap between the analogue music of his heritage and the emerging digital possibilities of the future. This label has always forged its own independent path and to date has released 56 physical CD albums as well as 21 download only releases.

Even after being involved in music since the late 1970’s Boddy has continued to explore new sonic territories and in 2016 he released what was probably his most experimental album in “Tone Science” (DiN48). This album comprised five long, slowly evolving self playing compositions realised entirely on his vast arsenal of modular synthesisers. Boddy’s love of the analogue sound has been well documented not only through his own releases but many sound and sample libraries. These instruments all but disappeared in the 1990’s but recent years has seen an unprecedented growth in interest in this form of synthesiser with a proliferation of both module manufacturers and performers using these highly flexible and personal systems.

Thus, inspired by his “Tone Science” release, Boddy has set up this sub-label to feature artists and performers working in the field of modular synthesis. The first release “Module No.1 Structure and Forces” was released in March 2018 and has garnered a lot of critical acclaim. This second compilation “Module No.2 Elements and Particles”, like its predecessor, features nine artists from different musical backgrounds with the common thread being that all the tracks were composed entirely with a modular synth system.

The album opens and closes with the ambient soundscapes of two tracks by Todd Barton and
r beny. Barton is a world renowned exponent of Buchla modular systems as well as the Music Easel employed on this track. Austin Cairns (aka r beny) has a penchant for lo-fi looped synth atmospheres which combined, in this case, with a field recording creates a haunting, evocative piece. The next three pieces by Bluetech, Parallel Worlds and Paul Nagle build up rhythmic and sequenced elements with a fascinating amount of detail that modular systems are so good at. They also all use various methods to produce a poly-rhythmic, fractal feel as patterns shift and change throughout their tracks. The middle of the album then sees a fascinating experimental ambient interlude by Dave Bessell (a member of the synth group Node) using waveguide physical modelling in the analogue domain. The second half of the album has a rawer, more gritty feel with Richard Quirk building up a crescendo of wonderful textures in his track “Radar Hill”. This is followed by Hainbach using the exotic Ciat-Lonbarde series of hand built instruments to produce, in his words, a piece of “pure electronic music”. Nathan Moody then brings proceedings to a climax with a gnarly, muscular track using a Buchla modular system before the blissful ending piece “Marine Layer” closes out the 60 minute sonic journey the listener has just travelled.

Boddy has curated both the artists and tracks on this album to flow in a musical way and not just be a collection of equipment heavy demos. Though fascinating and always cool to look at, it is important not to get lost in the gear for gear’s sake syndrome. Having said that this album features Eurorack, Serge, Buchla & Ciat-Lonbarde modular systems and the nine tracks show how varied and flexible these instruments can be.

“Tone Science Module No.2 Elements and Particles” continues the journey down the rabbit hole of possibilities and sound worlds inhabited by artists and musicians working in this ever fascinating and varied musical field.

"A quick demo of my custom build Ciat-Lonbarde Fourses Tarp"

via this auction

"This is a custom built version of the Ciat-Lonbarde Fourses Tarp paper circuit. It is a chaotic oscillator consisting of four triangle oscillators bouncing off of each-other. Each jack is both an input and an output. Make connections using banana jacks or by touching the nodes. Product contains a built-in speaker. Runs on battery power. A ground jack is provided for connecting with other gear. I have only tested this with other Ciat-Lonbard paper circuits, inter-patch at your own risk! Banana cables not included."

Ciat-Lonbarde Cocoquantus

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Ciat-Lonbarde Cocoquantus from the days when Peter Blasser was still building his incredible instruments completely by hand, as much works of art as they are capable instruments.

This gorgeous unit is from the final production in the "brass screws" era and more than any other C-L instrument, the Cocoquantus makes it clear why Peter took this approach: the screws are extremely sensitive to the touch via skin capacitance, and connections can be established and the instrument programmed simply by tapping or touching a few screws at once. Wonderfully responsive leading to hours of sonic exploration with this unique and incredibly powerful device.

Two looping delay units (made of all discrete parts) provide the ability to capture, repitch, stretch, compress and otherwise time-mangle your audio (three inputs are provided to each delay, an XLR microphone with preamp, line level, and synth level)..... Assignable-curve Dolby filters give the ability to cut or mute either delay line via voltage or input control. Functions to flip/skip and reverse audio are all available as patch points, as is overall speed of each delay.

Sitting between the two delay lines is the quantussy oscillator device. Five interactive oscillators (with modulation inputs and multi-waveform outputs) modulate each other in ways that can be reordered and controlled in real time, and overall speed and chaos is available from two master control knobs. This quantussy device provides the coco-pilot with numerous interesting voltage patterns, perfect for modulating the delay and audio parameters of the delay lines.

Used this way the Cocoquantus provides an incredibly unique and powerful way to interact with your audio - it can reorder, re-shape, re-contextualize, it can mangle beyond all recognition. It can find voices and patterns in your inputs that would have remained undiscovered.

It's a mistake to think of the Cocoquantus as simply a fancy pair of audio loopers. It's better to think of this an an instrument that is controlled by incoming and sampled audio.

This one is hard to part with. It's beautiful and a joy to interact with, and a wonderful piece of art from the early days of Ciat-Lonbarse. It is in nearly mint condition, fully functional and includes a power supply. You will love it."
