PROLOGUE VS PROPHET-6: A Friendly Comparison

Published on May 17, 2018 MR TUNA Music

"Join your excitable friend MR TUNA on a journey to appreciate two excellent synthesizers for their similiarities and differences. This is a simple and friendly discussion comparing some features on the new Korg Prologue 16 and the Sequential Circuits Prophet-6 analog synthesizers. This is nothing serious or in depth, just personal opinions on two beautiful synths."

MR TUNA Music: Why I love the Roland System-8

Published on Jan 9, 2020 MR TUNA Music

"2020 is my year to become a bigger presence in the synth community, starting with this scattered look at what is ultimately my favorite synth-- The Roland System-8 Plug-Out Synthesizer.

Unscripted and unfocused (as always) it's a journey to the center of the synth, with touched-on topics like CV/Gate control, input effects, the many filter options, and MORE!"

New Jupiter-X vs. Vintage Juno-106: PATCH MATCH™ **No Talking**

Published on Mar 3, 2020 MR TUNA Music

"Doing my best to recreate as-close-to-identical patches as I can manage on the new Roland Jupiter-X and the original Juno-106 to show off any noticeable differences between the two. Certainly the Jupiter-X is a much more capable tool with a lot of sound-design and power packed into a modern digital instrument; but for this comparison I will specifically focus on the pre-loaded Juno-106 engine included from the factory.
There are no added effects or processing other than the that of the famous Juno chorus function-- which you'll know immediately by their tell-tale noise machines. (You can turn this setting down or off entirely on the JP-X)

It's an exciting new episode of PATCH MATCH (from scratch!)™"

Korg Prologue: All The Bass Patches

Published on Jul 10, 2019 MR TUNA Music MR TUNA Music

"Super sorry if it's a little blown out. Still figuring stuff OUT.
Compressor is making things a little heavy, and there's very little method to the madness of showing off these patches, but one of the best features of the Prologue is the easy patch sorting options!"

OB-6: Creating and Explaining Synth Sounds 🎹🎛✨

video upload by MR TUNA Music

"It's time to learn about synthesis with the analog sounds of the OB-6
Join your friend MR TUNA as he takes a deep dive into this modern classic starting with a basic patch and exploring its features to create unique and distinctive sounds.

The Oberheim (or Sequential Circuits!) OB-6 is a highly regarded analog synthesizer known for its warm and classic sound. It's a collaborative effort between two legendary companies in the world of synthesizers: Dave Smith Instruments (DSI) and Tom Oberheim. Here are some key features and details about the OB-6:

Analog Architecture: The OB-6 is a true analog polyphonic synthesizer, which means it uses voltage-controlled analog circuitry to generate and shape its sounds. This results in a rich and organic sonic character.

Polyphony: The OB-6 is good for chords and complex musical arrangements. It has 6-voices that can be played polyphonically or stacked in unison.

Oscillators: The OB-6 features two voltage-controlled oscillators (VCOs) and a sub-oscillator per voice. These oscillators provide a wide range of waveforms, including sawtooth, square, and pulse, (plus anything in-between) allowing for diverse sound shaping.

Filters: The filter on each card is based upon the 12dB/oct state-variable resonant introduced on the SEM, and offers a continous transition from low-pass, to notch, to high-pass- as well as an additional band-pass mode.

Modulation: The OB-6 offers various modulation sources and destinations, allowing you to create evolving and dynamic sounds. It includes an LFO (Low-Frequency Oscillator) and an envelope generator for modulation.

Effects: This synthesizer comes with built-in effects such as delays, choruses, and reverbs adding depth and character to the sound.

Interface: The OB-6 features an intuitive and hands-on knob-per-function interface with knobs, sliders, and switches for easy sound tweaking and manipulation.

MIDI and Connectivity: It offers MIDI DIN and USB connectivity, making it compatible with other MIDI gear and software.

Overall, the Oberheim OB-6 is a highly regarded and sought-after synthesizer due to its superb sound quality, classic analog architecture, and user-friendly interface. It's a very cool and capable synth."

OB-6 VS MS2000 - Matching Patches and Sound

Published on Nov 23, 2017 MR TUNA Music

"It's the comparison nobody asked for!!! Join your friend, Mr Tuna for an excerise in futility, comparing basic sound and matching patches with two very different synths!

Why compare these two stellars synths as if they were in the same league??? A matter of convenience, I suppose. If you've got one synth on top of another synth it just makes sense!

If you're watching this, forgive me. This video is so basic and unentertaining I have no idea why I am even posting it.

OB-6 or MS2000 ---what's YOUR preference???"

PATCHMATCH™ // OB-6 vs. Prophet-6

Published on Dec 11, 2017 MR TUNA Music

"Join your friend Mr. Tuna in an exploration of sound, building and matching patches on two incredible synthesizers: The Dave Smith Prophet-6 and the Dave Smith/Tom Oberheim OB-6.

For this exercise, I am trying to recreate one of my favourite sounds on the OB, and in that sense the parameters and sound-sculpting lends a little more towards emphasizing the unique character and timbres of OB than the Prophet, but you might be surprised (or not surprised at all) at how truly similar the end up in the end!

Check it out, and bare with me- things may get a little shy of exciting."

Korg Prologue: Pads (Stock Patches)

Published on Jan 20, 2019 MR TUNA Music

"Get more familiar with the 500 presets the Korg Prologue has to offer. I love building patches as much as the next guy, but sometimes some instant inspiration is what's desperately needed. The Prologue makes it really easy to find a specific patch, or to find a patch based on the type of sound you are looking for.
These are the pads. My apologies for the repetitive playing and progressions-- still improving my chord-smarts.

This is the 16 voice version of the Korg Prologue, and the low frequency compressor is about half way. I probably should have turned that OFF.
(I definitely should have turned it off)

Also, experience the surreal beauty and the technological marvel that is the MR TUNA HOLO-DISPLAY 2000™ Virtual-Synthesizer-Holographic-Display System™ as it displays real time patch and sound information on it's informative Information Display™"

Check it out: 1980 Alpha Syntauri Computer Music System | Synth History

video upload by MR TUNA Music

"My friends, I present to you the complete 'alphaSyntauri' (Alpha Syntauri) Computer Music System circa 1980. I finally got it all set up and (mostly) functioning after buying this from a nice old lady in town. The old Apple II clone had a shot power supply so I found a new one and we're off to the races!!

This is a not-so-quick demo of some of the features I was able to coax into functioning, and a few sounds that came standard with this cool vintage computer music system."

"My friends--- I can finally say it: The Juno-X is HERE.
What an honour to be a part of the launch campaign with my friends at Roland. I am a huge advocate for the original Jupiter-X and all of its amazing capabilities, and the new Juno-X does EVERYTHING the Jupiter does in a more accessible and more inexpensive package--- it even has stereo speakers under the hood!

Roland JUNO-X - DEMO by gattobus: "Distant Memories"

video upload by gattobus

"Here is the new Roland JUNO-X!!!
Every sound you hear in this video comes from this instrument, no overdubs, everything's been played in real time using the 5 internal parts, iArpeggio and the step sequencer.
Inside of each unit that you will find in the stores, there's also a piece of me as I had the privilege to create a lot of factory tones, scenes and the new iArpeggio 2.0 patterns!
I put a lot of love into it and I'm so happy with the final result. I have never felt so good with a synth since System-8, my first real job for Roland. It's a great honour for me to collaborate with them.
This simple song that I played, is not just a demo, it's a declaration of love towards life, for the fact that it led me to do (at least for me) the most beautiful job in the world.
I would like to thank president Jun-Ichi Miki, Hisakazu Yamasato, Akihiro Nagata, Yoshinori Iwamoto, Gota Miyabashira and all the amazing people in Roland I've been in contact with during the last 5 years. You are like superheroes to me, you're really making my dreams come true.
I hope this is only the beginning.
Happy 50th Anniversary Roland!!! 🧡"

The Legendary JUNO Experience Reimagined with the Power of Roland’s ZEN-Core Synthesis System

Los Angeles, CA, April 26, 2022 — Roland announces JUNO-X, a new polyphonic synthesizer driven by the next-generation ZEN-Core Synthesis System. JUNO-X brings the best of the past together with Roland’s latest technologies, reimagining the vintage JUNO experience with vastly expanded sound possibilities and free-flowing tools tuned for today’s music. It delivers the full capabilities of the native ZEN-Core engine, along with genuine recreations of the JUNO-60 and JUNO-106 synths plus other legacy Roland instruments.

Standing among the greatest analog synthesizers ever created, Roland’s iconic JUNO lineup has had a massive impact on music for over four decades. The warm, organic sounds of the JUNO-60 and JUNO-106 defined countless ’80s pop hits and played a huge role in the emergence of techno, house, synthwave, and other electronic styles. JUNO-X delivers the vintage JUNO spirit that continues to inspire leading music makers, coupled with the power and versatility needed for modern workflows.

JUNO-X includes JUNO-60 and JUNO-106 Models, plus an all-new JUNO-X engine with a Super Saw waveform, velocity sensitivity, pitch envelope control, and other evolved features. The two beloved chorus modes from the originals are also available, plus a third mode with even more fatness and swirl. Users can combine them to create seven different chorus effects for use with any JUNO-X tone.

JUNO-X features additional Models from the historic Roland canon, including the PCM-based XV-5080, acoustic pianos from the RD series, and an expressive Vocoder. Model Expansions from Roland Cloud are supported as well, giving players the ability to load optional titles such as the JUPITER-8, JD-800, SH-101, Vocal Designer, and others.

Roland Cloud is also home to a growing range of Wave Expansions, Sound Packs, Sample Packs, and other creative tools, and ten free Sound Packs are available with a JUNO-X purchase. Additionally, JUNO-X provides integrated support for Roland Cloud Connect, a powerful option that includes the WC-1 wireless adapter and one year of Roland Cloud Pro membership. This allows users to browse, audition, and load Model Expansion titles and other Pro membership content directly to the keyboard via Wi-Fi.

A key element of the JUNO’s appeal was a straightforward interface that made it easy to craft inspiring sounds and evolving textures in the heat of the moment. With a familiar hands-on panel inspired by the original 1980s synths, JUNO-X invites players to fully immerse in the music and create without limits. Up to four tones can be layered together, and a wide selection of modern effects are available for enhancing sounds. First introduced with JUPITER-X, the powerful I-Arpeggio function offers both traditional arpeggio sounds and organic, inspiring movement driven by intelligent algorithms.

JUNO-X comes equipped with an expressive 61-note keyboard with aftertouch and loads of connectivity for every musical workflow, including balanced and unbalanced audio outputs, a stereo audio input, and MIDI I/O. There’s also a mic input for vocal performing or feeding the onboard Vocoder. USB is available for data backup, audio/MIDI communication with DAWS, and remote editing with the free JUNO-X Editor for macOS and Windows. A high-quality stereo speaker system provides built-in sound monitoring, and Bluetooth® is available for streaming music from a mobile device.

Availability & Pricing

The Roland JUNO-X Programmable Polyphonic Synthesizer will be available in the U.S. in May for $1999.99."

--- Original post prior to the above follows (pics replaced with hi res versions - click them for the full size shots) ---

This is just breaking - no press release or info on Roland's site yet. Until then, some pics and features. As you can see this one is based on the Juno-106 design. The UI is as important as the engine and it looks like Roland may have nailed this one. The one problem with the original Juno-106 are those BA662A voice chips that fail over time. I've had a couple go and they are not simple to replace. You have to unsolder multiple pins on them to remove them.

What's interesting is it appears Roland is releasing classic physical designs with overlapping synth engines. The JUPITER-X has the JUPITER-8, JX-8P, JUNO-106, SH-101, XV-5080, RD, Vocoder, and ZEN-Core engines. The Juno-X has JUNO-106, Juno-60, XV-5080, RD, Vocoder, and ZEN-Core. So the X adds the Juno-60 but is missing the Jupiter-8, JX-8P, and SH-101? The Juno-X adds built-in speakers like the Jupiter-Xm. Interesting they note the speakers were inspired by the Juno-60 below. The Juno-60 did not have built-in speakers. The Juno-106S and SynthPlus 60 did.

Features:

Over 4,000 presets from historic Roland products including the JUNO-106, Juno-60, XV-5080, RD series of pianos, and classic vocoder model

Model Expansions incorporate even more Roland history and sound-design technology to offer nearly endless options for sonic exploration

Newly engineered Super Saw oscillator, Chorus III effect, and more use ZEN-core Synthesis to deliver a worthy holder of the Juno gauntlet

Layer up to 4 different sounds for unparalleled tone design opportunities

Intuitive interface enables straightforward sound design and modification

Ergonomic arrangements encourage breezy workflow, setup recall, and preset management with Scenes (up to 256 global setup presets)

Free Juno-X Editor software is included to give you even deeper access to making your sounds your own

Classic design and robust hardware seamlessly blend satisfying tactility with precision control

Aftertouch and assignable sliders and switches provide great range of expressivity

Retro arpeggiator and I-Arpeggiator can be freely toggled to allow for greater rhythmic flourish
USB audio/MIDI interface and USB memory port for data backup, computer connection, and more

Onboard stereo speakers (inspired by the Juno-60) and Bluetooth compatibility make it easy to jam along to any accompanying track

Dedicated microphone input includes its own effects to model inputs and vocoded sounds

Multi-effects suite includes multiple forms of reverb, delay, chorus, EQ, compression, and overdrive

Output jacks for hold and control pedals allow for expansion of expressive control

3.5mm and 1/4-inch headphone outputs, L/Mono and R 1/4-inch main outs, and L/R XLR outs

DUO JAMS: Squarp Pyramid, Sub37, Minilogue, TR-8 and more

Published on Jul 9, 2017 MR TUNA Music

"Jared came over and we had some good jams. The camera has got some borderline unforgivable frame rate issues and goes out of sync by the 2 minute mark, but that's the way it goes... you're here for the music anyways, right?? Starts off with some Minilogue and Eventide Space we record into Squarp Pyramid with the beating heart of the TR8 to guide us, then it's bass in yo face from Sub37, and we skitter about some more keys after that but its long and painful so just keep that in mind. if it looks like we're not playing, IT'S THE GODDAMN FRAME RATE! FUCK!"
