EOWAVE MAGMA Now Available

"Eowave analogue bassline synthesizer with sequencer and memory

After 2 years of development, we're proud to announce the release of the MAGMA, Eowave's new analogue bassline synthesizer with sequencer and memory.

The MAGMA makes you go back into the 80's sounds with sonorities like Eurythmics, Nitzer Ebb, Depeche Mode... The sound engine is inspired from the SH series by Roland, which had this waveform mix and a sequencer. Though, the idea of the MAGMA was not to make a copy of a vintage synth, but to build a new synth with the best of today's analogue and digital technology. We wanted to build a synth with a very specific texture of sound, sounds like the magma, something warm, thick and fat. We've added modern controls and a memory with 256 presets. Presets can be edited with a free editor. USB connection offers MIDI over USB and firmware update of the sequencer.

VCO Section
The MAGMA is monophonic, but with the desync of the sub-oscillator, you could think it has more than one oscillator!!!! The mix between the four waveforms is incredibly versatile and can create infinite variety of sounds.
- Analogue VCO with square saw sub
- Sub can be 1 or 2 octaves below the master freq.
- A mixer allows to freely mix the four waveforms for infinite sound designs. The VCO can be modulated by LFO and env3.
- Variable glide

Filter section
The filter is a 24 dB low-pass filter also inspired from classical filters from the 80s. It's full analogue and can be modulated by env2, KB, lfo. An external audio with a trimmer allows to feed the filter.

Envelope section
- 3 envelopes:
1 envelope for the pitch (AD),
1 envelope for the filter (ADSR),
1 envelope for the VCA (ADSR)

VCA section
The full analogue VCA is affected to env1. 2 envelopes ADSR modulate respectively the amplitude and the filter. Attack goes from 2ms to 10s.

LFOs section
Two LFO with 8 waveforms (triangle, ramp up, ramp down, square, random, digital noise, staircase up, staircase down)

Sequencer
Like on the SH series, the MAGMA has a sequencer. It's a 16 step sequencer with LED.
- 4 rows: 1 row controls gates and notes.
- 3 other rows are freely assignable to any parameter of the front panel.
Recent addition: We added Swing and shuffle per note.

Memory
The MAGMA is one of the only analogue synth with memory. You can recall 256 presets.

Connections

audio out
MIDI in
Usb (for software update and MIDI in&out)

The MAGMA is made in France. All units are mounted, checked and tuned by Eowave."

Dirty Electronics/Mute Records Synth with Autographs

via this auction
"Top of the list here is an unused and brand new "touch and tilt" synthesizer, designed and built by Dirty Electronics, commissioned by Mute Records and for sale exclusively at the Mute Records Short Circuit electronic music festival, held at The Roundhouse, London, 13th & 14th May 2011. Also up for grabs (as part of this lot) are autographs of three guys who have helped craft so many Mute records...Daniel Miller (the boss man), Flood (record producer for Depeche Mode, Nick Cave, Nitzer Ebb, Renegade Soundwave etc.) and Gareth Jones (sound engineer). There are also six black and white 8"x10" photographs taken at the weekend event, plus A5 and A6 sized leaflets distributed at the event. Only 50 copies of the Mute Synth were manufactured and all were sold at The Roundhouse. You will struggle to find another copy of this amazing piece of electronic wizardry. An A4 paper manual is included. The size of the synth is approximately 18x11 cm. The synth has no keyboard and cannot be programmed, it has no memory. Essentially you are bidding on an item for what it actually is more than what it actually does. In essence it is a noise generator that responds to touch and alters pitch/sound when tilted. The following is an excerpt from the included documentation, which better describes the device... The Mute Synth is a hand-held touch and tilt instrument with copper etched artwork and contoured printed circuit board that was designed in collaboration with Mute and graphic designer Adrian Shaughnessy. The instrument brings together many Dirty Electronics aesthetics and instrument designs into one device in particular creating an instrument ‘of the hand’ (in terms of both playing and building), a noise-based device that utilises feedback, and exploring the relationship between artwork and circuit board. It combines sound synthesis with a sequencer/pulser, and it is ‘knobless’. The Mute Synth is controlled by using the conductivity of the human body to complete the instrument’s circuit when the copper etching is touched. There are touch ‘points’ on both sides of the circuit board, and the instrument is designed to be played with thumbs and fingers. Two tilt switches on different planes allow for gestural control of the sequencer. Pulsating brilliant white noise and grunge in the hand!"

Custom Red & Black Circuit Bent Roland MC-505

via this auction

"So, what's new on this machine?
Aside from the stellar paint job and wooden ends from http://www.customsynth.co.uk I applied a mini breadboard to give the MC-505 a patchbay for the nineteen or so newly-added contacts. This was a lot harder than it sounds, considering the casing is metal (always a risk of shorting connections) and there's not a lot of space to work with when reassembled. In the end, I'm extremely happy with the way it turned out..even if it took a few months.

This machine now allows you to short out only the sounds, but keep all the other functions intact. Everything behaves as normal when the breadboard is or isn't in use. The resulting audio is largely unpredictable but can be reproduced if noted. Think of it as the heaviest sequencer Roland never made.

Furthermore, all green LEDs were replaced with red (except for the main playback indicator at the middle top), the white buttons/keys were whitened with retr0bright, and the LCD screen was replaced with a snazzy, new red-on-black unit.

This project was something of a proof of concept which turned out to be pretty fun. This is certainly a one-of-a-kind piece that I never really intended on keeping for very long. Now it just needs a good home where someone will use it on a regular basis.

Those who might be interested in this unit would also be a fan of Metasonix gear, NIN's Year Zero album, Ed Banger-style techno, EBM, Nitzer Ebb among many other noisy electronic styles. /namedrop

All audio below is direct from the MC-505 with absolutely zero post-effects/EQ. Expect to hear some patch switching, knob twiddling and adjustments on the breadboard though. All patterns used were simple presets.

So, what's included?

- Modified Roland MC-505
- Power cable
- Nine mini jumper wires for patch creation
- A copy of each vinyl release on Radiograffiti
- A free copy of each album released by our DIY label from now on.

So, anything else I should know?

There are a few minor paint errors on the front panel which happened while at customsynth. I tried to take photos of this (apologies for the grainy shots), so please look them over to see if this is going to drive you nuts. I found that it's barely even noticeable when in use.

If you have two or more connections on the breadboard, please remember to remove the jumper wires before you power up the machine. Sometimes it will hang on power up *if* you forget to remove them. It's completely harmless...but it will cause a small heart attack when you forget and see that it's not powering on. Simply remove the connections, unplug the unit, wait a minute, and power it back up.

The breadboard has seventeen rows with five tie points in each row. Because there are only about nineteen connections made, only the center nine or ten rows (of five each) have any effect when used. This should be an ample amount of connection points for anyone.

The value wheel has been replaced, but the values still skip by two when cycling through at high speeds. This leads me to believe that it might be an OS issue, but don't quote me on that.

I've used this particular unit extensively for over three years now with zero issues, but considering the nature of circuit bent gear, the sale will be final with no returns. Contact me in the off-chance something does happen."

DIY Modular playing Nitzer Ebb

YouTube via hnydell | July 18, 2010

"My DIY MFOS modular - the Modulator - playing Isn't it funny how your body works by Nitzer Ebb. The 16-step sequencer's gate outputs trigs two ADSRs for bass drum. Clock out is sent to slave 10-step sequencer and to two ARs controlling filter cutoff and VCA. 16 step seq CV out gets patched to both VCOs. The stereo auto panner is used during the last few seconds."

Roland System 100m vs MFOS - DIY modular VCF shootout

hnydell | June 15, 2010

"Comparison between Roland System 100m 121 VCF module and the Music From Outer Space 4-pole VCF.
Setup: MFOS 16 step sequencer driving two MFOS VCOs. Each VCF is fed a sawtooth and a pulse wave from the VCOs, slightly detuned. An MFOS AR envelope controls the VCA (Sys 100m 130), an MFOS ADSR controls the two filters. The sequencer is in 2x8 mode, where the second half later is patched in to the VCF control.
Since the 100m uses 15 volts, the MFOS adsr (12V) cannot really sweep through the full VCF frequency span on the 121. This is not very apparent though."

Billy Corgan joins effort to create Moog museum

"Billy Corgan is lending a hand to preserve the musical legacy of electronic synthesizer pioneer Bob Moog by creating a museum about his life and work.

The Smashing Pumpkins frontman is working with the Bob Moog Foundation to establish the museum and scholarships in his name.

'I believe Bob Moog to be one of the great visionaries of our time," said Corgan in a statement.

'His ideas far transcend use in just music, and to this day continue to have impact in everything from rock to rap to quantum physics. I strongly believe many people all over the world would benefit from being able to interact with the thoughts, ideas, inventions, and life of Dr. Moog.'"

full story on NME

Update via minimi123:
"according to a very reliable source, bon harris of nitzer ebb fame did the synth programming on billy corgan's album thefutureembrace, and they used a lot of doepfer a100 and roland system 100 as well as analog drum machines.
i really like this album, which is quite different from corgans work with the smashing pumpkins. his involvement in this moog museum comes as no surprise to me.

here's an article on bon's work with the smashing pumpkins from back in 98:
